I've never heard of this. What is this game?

TSW is a buy-to-play MMO from Ragnar Tornquist, the guy who made The Longest Journey and Dreamfall. The game focuses on urban legends, real-life folklore, and literary horror, mashing them up into a big Joss Whedon-like stew set in the modern day. Choose one of three secret societies (Illuminati, Templar, Dragon) to get into a weird war. One of its biggest strengths is an aggressive monthly release of new missions and updates, making it more like a TV show you play.

I've been playing since July and I'm still rather enthusiastic about it. Hence this thread.

Don't I have to pay a monthly subscription?

Used to but not anymore. Since December, the game switched to a buy-once format. The entire game through Issue 4 is available for free. After paying $30, that's several hundred hours of gameplay right off the bat. Most of the monthly updates will continue to be free, save for most of the missions, which will be packaged as DLC. After a while, the DLC will be bundled together and eventually merged with the free client.

What's this about no levels?

Instead of vertically grinding for levels and gear, TSW goes for horizontal growth in your character. Earning XP gets you Ability Points and Skill Points, which can be spent on more abilities (over 500 of them) and skills (the closest thing to levels in this game). What this means is that you don't need to roll an alt if your group needs a certain role filled; just switch out abilities and your Healer becomes a Tank. Check out Yokai's guide for much more detailed information.

What makes this game distinct?

I just think the world-building, the characters, the writing, cutscenes, voice acting, etc. are all top-notch. SWTOR and Guild Wars 2 wish they had this level of writing behind them. This game also uses adventure-style puzzles called investigation missions that give a ton more story than your average kill-3-rats quest. In order to completely finish one, you might have to research Biblical verses, classical literature, political scenarios, obscure occult figures...excuse me while I reflexively nerd out.

Anyway, if you enjoy Guild Wars 2, H.P. Lovecraft, Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, point-and-click adventure games, level-less RPGs, Doctor Who, a game world based on real life folklore, Joss Whedon, Indiana Jones, and/or intelligent players (not necessarily in that order), this game just might be for you.

I've been keeping an eye on this one for a few years now but have been reluctant to make a purchase yet due to the way Age of Conan was handled. I still think that AoC had the best starting zone for any MMO that I've played and managed to set the bar exceptionally high, so it wasn't surprising that the game quality rapidly deteriorated. But it wasn't just that; end game was virtually non-existant and out of the dozen or so people I began playing with I was the only one who stuck it out until 80 - even then a GM had to finish the final destiny quest for me due to a bug.

My overall impression of it was that Funcom had gone to great lengths to create an incredibly polished game for the first 20 levels in order to make it seem as though the entire game was like that. Whilst the Secret World may not have a level system I'm going to give it a while to see what the general impression is then so as not to fall for the same thing twice.

Other than that the game seems very interesting and could potentially overcome the problem that a lot of MMOs have (e.g. Star Wars) of severely imbalanced factions. Have you noticed any of the factions being particuarly popular or are they all reasonably balanced?

Funny you ask, each server seems to favor one faction more, but not overwhelmingly so. Most servers have a Templar majority but my server (Leviathan) is all about Illuminati, myself included. The persistent PvP zone Fusang has tended to be steamrolled by 'Lums but the Dragon are becoming extremely competitive. It's more of a matter of how many people are enlisted at one point. The devs are working to balance Fusang out a bit more so that there isn't as much of a zerg fest. That said, the factions themselves have no mechanical difference, save for the pre-built decks that are thrown in for flavor. One would alt for the different opening sequences and faction quests.

I heard about the Conan disaster. Funcom seems to be a lot more conscientious about stamping out bugs; after finishing the second zone, I've yet to see any real problems with quests, despite seeing complaints from other players. As for polish, they seemed to go the other way and go for smaller, but more fleshed out zones. IMO Secret World's (ahem) secret weapon over Conan is the lack of a larger, connected game map. The launch content features three real-world locations split up over eight zones. With the only connection being a portal room, that leaves room to update with polished zones that don't need to be part of anything. They also plan to update monthly with additional missions for existing zones. Savage Coast, for example, is somewhat sparse after the first zone but it will fill up nicely over the next few months. Even then, there is an overarching theme and story to each zone that does add up to something rather memorable.

I'd like to get into this but $50 is too steep for me and the intro videos totally scream Buffy the Simlish Speaker to me. The character build options sound fun for a MMO, but I don't think I could take the setting seriously. Gonna watch this one if it eventually goes free-2-play.

I have to say that AoC had a very linear start zone that didn't feel Conan-like. It didn't even feel as free as the World of Warcraft starts (the first time at least). I know Conan was a pirate too, but I'd rather have started like a barbarian or an Aquilonian.

Linearity is definitely one thing. There are some unique faction quests but everyone takes the same storyline. On one hand, though, that means the devs can put out content a little faster.

F2P isn't out of the question, either. The game already has an optional clothing store with ridiculous prices ($10 for in-game jeans? Really, Funcom?).

Funcom is fiercely aiming at a specific target audience.

Free weekend's going on right now, if you fancy a 30 GB download. :D Again, I'm on the Leviathan server.

30 gigs? It would take me the entire weekend to download it.

lol
I think I'd get it loaded in 8 hours, but that's a lot of time.

So chances are good that I'll get annoying with these updates. ;) I'll try and keep you guys up to speed on what I'm doing in the game with a couple AARs in the future, as well as where the game is at content-wise.

But I'm glad I subbed. This new livestream goes into more detail about what their future plans are. It also sounds like there's going to be a longer time trial coming soon that would justify the download.

In the meantime, this is the latest State of the Game from the director:

http://www.thesecretworld.com/news/game_director_joel_bylos_reveals_his_plans_for_the_secret_world

Joel Bylos said:
Hi, all -

Are you sitting down? Comfortable? Good. Let’s talk about our game.

I say our game because once an MMO goes live it is no longer a collection of ideas, features and dreams in the heads of a group of developers, but rather a living, breathing thing. It belongs as much to the players as the designers. It becomes, in essence, a collaborative project.

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Joel Bylos and I recently stepped into the new position as Game Director on ‘The Secret World’. For the past two years I have been the Lead Content Designer for the game, and my primary responsibility was to lead the team who developed content such as the investigation missions. Before coming to ‘The Secret World’ I worked as Lead Designer on the critically acclaimed ‘Rise of the Godslayer’ expansion for our ‘Age of Conan’ MMO. I live and breathe MMOs and I consider myself extremely fortunate to be in a position where I can help shape the future of ‘The Secret World’ and lead a team whose ambition is to push the genre forward and create new and different MMO experiences.

As I step into the new position as Game Director, Ragnar Tørnquist will remain in his role as Creative Director and I very much look forward to continue working with him. We have been a team for many years now and we will continue working closely together even though his role has shifted a bit and I am now in charge of the game’s vision and development.

‘The Secret World’ may not be the perfect game for everyone; in fact, I think it is safe to say that it is one of the most divisive MMOs ever made.

Looking at reviews, ‘The Secret World’ scored everything from 90 to 40. I have never before seen an MMO that has been both praised and criticized to such an extreme extent as with ‘The Secret World’. One minute PC Powerplay gives us a solid 90 saying ‘I love this game unequivocally’, next Quarter-to-Three slaps us with a 40 saying we have been ‘…unable to make the game we designed’. Some reviewers loved the game, others did not and that is completely understandable. On the other hand, if we look at user scores, we are one of the highest rated MMOs on MetaCritic the past decade and on MMORPG.com we come in second place on the list of top voted games in front of some the most critically acclaimed MMOs ever released.

I think you can interpret that in many different ways. To me personally, it tells me that ‘The Secret World’ hit a nerve. When we set out to make ‘The Secret World’ we made a decision to at least try and breathe some new life into a stagnating genre. We play these games, we love these games and we tried to listen to what people wanted - what they were saying in forums and chats and blogs about how and why the MMO genre was becoming stagnant. And then we set about changing the formula, rethinking old concepts and introducing new ideas.

When you raise the bar like that, it is easy to miss a few targets. For ‘The Secret World’ it meant that some things worked wonderfully, while other aspects of the game did not. Depending on what is important to you when playing the game, ‘The Secret World’ may either be the best MMO experience of your life or it may simply not live up to your expectations.

As a team we need to identify and improve areas that made it fall short of those expectations so that everyone can appreciate what we and so many of our players firmly believe to be true:

That ‘The Secret World’ is one of the most fun, exciting and unique MMOs ever made.

So below you can read a mission statement - what am I planning to do to make sure that 'The Secret World' becomes the game that we all want it to be.

First and foremost I need to provide our players with good, solid content updates on a regular basis, just as we have released three substantial updates since launch. I also need to do everything in my power to convince thousands of gamers out there who still have not played ‘The Secret World’ that this is a universe worth immersing yourself in. It is a crowded market out there and we have a lot of competition, so I know that we will need to make improvements but also expand on the game’s unique strengths to make it stand out even more clearly.

It is definitely going to be a challenge and fortunately I am bringing one of the most talented teams ever with me into the fray.

Our sleeves are rolled up. We have our war paint on. We are ready for battle.

What… you want details? Some more meat on that bone? Oh, alright.

After I took over I have had several exciting and incredibly inspiring meetings with the team where we have evaluated the game and looked at what we want to do to improve and expand upon the game in the months and even years to come.

tsw_new_york_raid_2.jpg

I am very happy about how quickly the team is delivering the new updates; the fact that we have released three solid content updates in less than three months after launch is a good indicator of our commitment and we hope that our subscribers feel that they are receiving the value they deserve. Going forward we will continue to crank out more content-laden updates. And while parts of our team are already working on creating the content that will be introduced to the game next year, we are also hard at work wrapping up Issue #4 which will be in not too long, as well as Issue #5 and Issue #6 that will appear in the next few months.

‘Issue #4: Big Trouble in the Big Apple’ is going to be a treat for people who enjoy amazing battles. We are packing tons and tons of good stuff into that update that truly builds on the strengths of the game. We are reaffirming the strength of the modern-day setting by introducing the first raid set in a devastated New York City where players must battle a towering Eldritch horror in the ruins of Time Square. And you can forget about trash mobs and gunning it to get to the end boss as fast as possible; in true ‘The Secret World’ style we will be using the raid to tell a story and immerse our players into our world’s rich atmosphere.

Of course, Issue #4 has plenty of other content as well. We’re introducing the second auxiliary weapon – the Chainsaw – to add even further depth to our freeform progression system. We are also opening the doors to the Albion Theatre in London where players can put on plays for each other and receive rewards. It may sound like a small thing, but I am excited about the fact that we can provide our role-playing community with more content and that we can make London, which is our primary social hub, an even more interesting place for players to hang out.

I am also happy to reveal that Issue #4 will be introducing one of the most requested features during Beta: reticule combat. This is something I wanted to bring into the game from the moment I put on the Game Director shoes as I feel it makes combat a lot more direct and exciting. We are not forcing it upon anyone, though. You will be able to freely switch between traditional targeting and the reticule depending on what you feel is best for you.

I will actually be showcasing this feature in a livestream that will be held Friday, 12th of October. We will provide everyone with the details on how to tune in as we get closer.

Now all of that is short-term stuff, Issue #4 will be hitting the live servers in not too long. We are, of course, also making plans that stretch well into the future.

I have often encouraged journalists to make the comparison between the game and a television series. We launched with the first season, and we are winding towards the big end-of-season cliff hanger, which will then kick off the second season. Questions will be answered and replaced with entirely new questions as you dig ever deeper into the secret world. The second season will include a wealth of new content, including Tokyo, a major new region that brings with it new monsters, myths and legends to the game.

Our ambition is not just adding more content and fleshing out more of the storyline. We want to make improvements and enhancements to the core gameplay and mechanics of the game.

2012-08_GAMESCOM_TOKYO1.JPG

A few concrete examples include the work we are currently doing on improving the animations in the game. We know this was one of the major complaints both in the beta and after release, and we are looking at how we can make player animations feel more fluid and natural. This entails implementing an entirely new animation backend for the Dreamworld engine, which will allow us to make improvement in both ‘The Secret World’ and future Dreamworld projects.

The systems team is also taking a close look at the current abilities in the game and will be attempting to make sure that every ability has its place and that nothing feels like filler. We are also looking at combat and how to make that even better experience. You will see some of the changes coming on the new auxiliary weapons, and then, as time permits, we will be going over some of the older abilities and freshening them up with new mechanics.

One of the things that players have requested we improve on is the secret society conflict. I feel this is perhaps the feature we strayed furthest from for launch. We did a good job of establishing the identity and feeling of three unique factions, but I do not think we managed to firmly establish a conflict between those factions in context with the gameplay. So the team is designing several features which will serve to bring this conflict back to the forefront, and while it is a little early to talk about what they are, I can say that I am really excited about their potential in tying together both PvE and PvP into the overall conflict.

Another thing we are working on which I am really excited about is what we internally like to call ‘puzzle raids’. One of the most heralded features of ‘The Secret World’ at launch were the investigation missions that merge adventure-game puzzle-solving based on real-world research and brings it into an MMO setting. ‘Puzzle raids’ are sort of group investigation missions and a throwback to our alternate reality gaming (ARG) roots which ‘The Secret World’ were such an important part of the game prior to launch.

How do they work? Well, for example, in London there are red phone boxes scattered all over town. One day, those phones will begin to ring. Answering those phones simultaneously with a group of people will provide every member of the raid with a single phrase…

… and there you go, tumbling down the rabbit hole.

‘The Secret World‘ is a journey, one that began as an idea in the mind of Ragnar Tørnquist then grew to envelop a development team, a community and finally hundreds of thousands of players all over the world. We have created a game that offers something unique not only to MMO gamers but to anybody who enjoys mature, intelligent gameplay and interesting characters in a darkly detailed world.

We are committed to this journey and we are committed to the unique vision of ‘The Secret World’. Together – heads unbowed – let us continue to battle the rising darkness.

Oh, and before I forget: we would greatly appreciate it if you helped us spread the word by sending your friends and family to our website where they can register for the free trial. I have heard the Illuminati, the Templar and the Dragon are all looking for new recruits!

Sincerely,

Joel Bylos

Game Director

Sounds like an extended trial is finally coming out. No word yet on permanent F2P.

In the meantime, watch the game director lose his head. :D (NSFW language)

So is it not a secret anymore? Times Square is attacked by a giant monster. Can't cover that up.

What giant monster in Times Square. :mischief: :fnord:

So the game is now buy to play like Guild Wars 2. There will be continuous free updates but some content like auxiliary weapons will be purchased in DLCs.

What is now required to be able to play The Secret World?

Everyone who has purchased (or will purchase) the game can now enjoy the full game without being required to sign-up for a monthly fee. This means that all of the heralded story-line and all of the game content available right now can be played as you please without requiring any additional payment.

Are there any restrictions to what a free player has access to?

No. You have access to all the content available right now, including all playfields, all missions; you may enter all lairs, participate in raids, learn all abilities, use all equipment and so on.

What is a 'Membership'?

For those dedicated to the game there is an optional Membership available which also includes some great items and services:

- 'The Time Accelerator'. This clickable item increases experience gain for defeating monsters by 100% for 1 hour and has a 16 hour cool-down. This item can only be used by Members and Grand Masters.
- $10 worth of Bonus Points given out every month which can be used towards any product in the Item Store of The Secret World (bonus points are valid for 6 months).
- Membership Item-of-the-month gift (given out every month).
- 10% discount to everything in the Item Store except Content Packs or other Packs (discounts to the Item Store do not stack with other offers).

How much does a Membership cost?

There are several offers for different durations of a Membership. The current prices are as follows:

1 month 14.99 USD/EUR
3 month 38.97 USD/EUR (12.99 USD/EUR per month)
6 month 71.94 USD/EUR (11.99 USD/EUR per month)
12 month 119.88 USD/EUR (9.99 USD/EUR per month)

The EUR price includes VAT where applicable.

What about Grand Masters?

The Grand Master Lifetime Option continues to yield all the benefits given to Members and more! As a Grand Master customer you receive everything that Membership customers get, every month, lifelong. In addition to that we have increased the Item Store discount to 20% for everything in the Item Store except Content Packs or other Packs.

I already bought an Initiate Pack in December 2012. Why was that not free?

Anyone who has purchased the Initate Pack in December 2012 before the offer was launched, will be reimbursed with 1800 bonus points to their game accounts.

What will this discount in the Item Store be valid for?

What used to be a discount of 10% discount to only social items in the Item Store has now been extended to be a discount on everything in the store. As Members are getting a 10% discount to everything in the store, Grand Masters will receive 20% discount to everything in the store!

When are items-of-the-month given out to Members and Grand Masters?

If you are a Member or a Grand Master you will receive the items on the first patch day of every month (currently the first Tuesday of every month). If you are playing the game without a Membership, the item will be given to you immediately when you sign up for Membership or become a Grand Master. The first gift is available now and can be claimed through the Item Store.

Are the free Bonus Points for members included with the first 30 days of the game?

No, the monthly Bonus Points are only given out when additional Membership and/or Grand Master is purchased. However, by completing 30 missions you unlock the similar level of Bonus Points – so there’s a motivator to play. The client fee includes the full game (including issue 1 through 4) as well as 30 days of Membership. Until the end of December issue 5 will also be included for anyone with a registered full account.

Are there other motivators for new players?

Yes, in addition to the 30-mission reward, there is also the challenge of taking down the Ur-draug. He is the final boss of the first dungeon in the game, and being able to complete this challenge yields a special reward called “The Whispering Demon Ring”. This powerful ring gives a fixed XP gain increase for new players and is a great way for new players to get a feel for what is in store deeper into the storyline.

What happens with my remaining Subscription time?

Your current subscription will be automatically transferred to the new Membership program. As such your account will be credited with 1200 bonus points, you can immediately claim the Time Accelerator item and your Membership gift of the month. The 1200 bonus points will be credited to your account on Dec. 12th, 2012. After that you will get 1200 points every 30 days from your renewal of the Membership.

What about future content updates?

Periodically we will release packs of DLC (Downloadable Content). The main content in these packs will be a story leading to unique rewards/items through missions. These packs are fully optional and can be purchased for the Bonus Points that are included in the optional Membership, as well as with the points offered with Grand Master Lifetime service. Players without a Membership or a Grand Master Service can of course as well purchase new DLC content in the Item Store.

When can the first DLC content be expected?

The first DLC will start selling in January 2013, and is the main storyline of Issue #5. However, this content will already be fully unlocked for anyone who has a full game account registered before the end of December 2012.

Besides DLCs, will there also still be regular content updates to The Secret World?

Definitely! Regular patches with free content and updates and enhancements to the core game will continue.

OP updated to something less stupid.
