In Norway the word 'Sol' means 'Sun'.

I've seen the MoO-series use the name Sol for our starsystem.

Is this a videly accepted name for our starsystem?

"Sol" is in fact the official scientific name of the Sun, and in science fiction (like Master of Orion) you will see Earth's solar system called the Sol System, in order to avoid confusion with any old "solar system" i.e. a group of planets orbiting the same primary.

Thanks. :)

In my experience, it is at least the standard for sci-fi/space opera computer games, and probably in TV and movies as well.

It's what I call the solar system too.

Sol is the portuguese name of the sun, and hence the correct one ;)

Do you pronounce it "sawl" or "sool" (the later is the Swedish pronunciation, ie, the one that God intended).

Sole, soul, or the sol in Pinsol.

Portuguese?

Bah; tis the name of mighty Sol Invictus, the Romano-Persian god of honor, bravery, justice and warriors!

The reason for calling it Sol is because it has been standard procedure to describe a star with stuff orbiting around it a sun. Thus using Sol avoids confusion on what "sun" we are talking about.

And Terra Firma is the Latin name for "dry land" which is why you will sometimes see people referred to as 'Terrans' in sci-fi.

Well, following the same spirit of the Sol issue, I should point out that "Planet Earth" is called "Planeta Terra" in portuguese - What obviously makes it the correct name again. ;)

(We refer to natives of "Terra" as "Terráqueos", not "Terrans", though.)

Regards :).

Hehehehe, I thought of recording it and making the file avaiable, but my mike is not working (and I'm not in the mood to find out why).

Anyway, lemme think of what word can I use to exemplify... (I'll be back as soon as I think of some)
