I haven't even patched my game yet and I get things like that too. My most recent completed game (a heart-breaking almost-win), the Russians were to the north of myself (the Iroquois), the Aztecs, and the Americans. FAR to the north, with the rest of us packed together in the south. I made Russia angry and they declared war on me. Knowing how far it was, I was not in the least concerned. Several turns later, a few warriors straggled in and were easily dispatched by my swordsmen (I think that's what they were).
Many years later, after I had ruined Montezuma (a few refugees escaped to a nearby continent), the Russians declared war on America, beyond my territory, and either they did not ask me for or I would not grant a right-of-passage. So they were forced to march the whole distance across my territory, with cavalry, musketmen, pikemen, archers, and _warriors_. I decided not to interfere with them, since they were not much in the way and were bothering my rivals. Just as they reached the other end, peace was declared and they began marching back, warriors and all. Since by this time I had completed my rail system, I offered them a right of passage agreement and told them to hurry off.
For a little perspective, I don't have a screenshot, but the continent was shaped roughly like a right bracket: ], with longer end-pieces. I held the middle, with the Americans and Russians at their respective ends.
