I will get the new attitude table and the hints out within the next few hours. :)

Just wanted to have something to show in the meantime, though. ;)

Okay, so here are the latest attitude summaries. Note this is a snapshot before the twins started campainging, so their holy war rhetoric has deliberately not been taken into consideration yet. :)

I'll get the hints out tomorrow morning my time (probably in about ten hours' time).

---------------------------------------------

The political landscape in the Kingdom of Delphi had changed.

The Siomaios faction was apparently no more, with the death of its founder Leonidas and his successor Filippos. The Siomaios twins had declared the formation of a new movement. Some of the former followers of Leonidas and Filippos automatically put their faith in the twins.

However others were appalled with the Siomaios faction, whichever incarnation it was or whatever it called itself. They were either displeased with policies enacted by the former Chief Ministers, or they were displeased with how Filippos had handled the Apollonian secession crisis --- in particular many were sickened by the razing of the city --- and they wanted to flock to any other banner.

But there was a problem. Kirillos, the first Chief Minister in this era of Synedrian rule had retired, and there weren't any strong leadership contenders among them to keep the faction together. They were his most loyal Synedroi, not loyal to a brand or movement as such.

Many of the followers of the dead "Baron" of Apollonia had died with him. But there were some, both within the city of New Apollonia and in the broader kingdom who either agreed with his goals, or opposed the government's handling of the situation, or who thought he had some good points even if his actions were questionable. It was these supporters who galvanised an opposition movement to the ruling faction, and they found the appropriate leader: Eurydice Nepides had never married and had no official heir, however he did have a bastard son who went by the name of Stathis Agos.

And so a rival faction formed around Stathis. Many supporters of Kirillos, or former supporters of the Siomaios faction looked to him with hope that he might be able to challenge Siomaios control of the Synedrion. Untested and relatively unknown, people were unsure: would he be like his father, or would he forge his own path?

It was with this in mind, and only these two factions available that the aristocratic, priestly and artistic voters of the kingdom contemplated the upcoming election.

Would any other leaders appear, or would the contest be for the first time between only two factions?

I was hoping to get the hints out this morning, but I've run out of time before an appointment. I've done all the hard work, just have to copy and paste information into PMs. Unfortunately I don't have time to do that just yet.

I'll try and get to it tonight. I'll be spaced out by anaesthesia, but I should be able to copy and paste a few lines of text (hopefully).

In the meantime, here's something I prepared earlier --- the latest list of nations:

State | Type of ruler/s | Comments
Kingdom of Delphi|Basileus|
Shoshone Federal Republic|Consuls|
Holy Despotate of China|Despotess|
Protestant Archbishopric of the Netherlands|Archbishop|
Polish Catholic Order|Grand Master|
Province of Quebec|Lord|vassal of the Kingdom of Delphi
County of Brussels|Count|
Province of Zurich|Lord|vassal of the Kingdom of Delphi
County of Milan|Count|vassal of Polish Catholic Order
Republic of Zanzibar|Consuls|autonomous region of the Shoshone Federal Republic
Republic of Almaty|Consuls|autonomous region of the Shoshone Federal Republic

Okay, hints have been distributed by PM to existing players and the election campaign for the 200 election has commenced.

The campaign period will run for four days.

I'll be away from my computer for most of the weekend, but if any new players join I've sent myself a PM with hints for any new players so I can send it from my mobile phone.

To any prospective new players: pick your name, pick a colour you want to represent you, choose a neighbourhood with voting rights (refer to the SPOILER text with the 'attitudes' tables --- all Aristocratic, Priestly, Artistic and a sole Labourer neighbourhood have the vote). Then I'll send you some hints about the dispositions of a random selection of neighbourhoods as well as what their dominant issues are.

Time until the close of polls: [timer=10/06/2015 8:10 AM UTC;Expired][/timer]

If we, Lysimachos and Lysistrate Siomaios of the Neo-Dualist Party, are elected to the Synedrion we seek to accomplish the following:

  • The Dutch Archbishop is too weak to consolidate any power over the Netherlands, and so now is the opportunity to strike against the heathen religion that is Protestantism once and for all. This would gain Delphi the control over great wonders such as Petra and Borobodur, and eventually allow for the establishment of an inquisition to rid Amsterdam of its status as a holy city. May the Gods be with us as our generals lead the way for Hellenism to conquer the north!

  • To prepare for this holy war, we should upgrade our army's weaponry by replacing swords and spears with longswords and pikes. This should make our military might even greater than it already is, and we have more than enough gold to support these upgrades.

  • We should seek to acquire the technology behind the Printing Press, an astounding new machine developed in the distant lands of China, preferrably through trade or espionage. Having this technology ourselves would allow for the Hellenic faith to spread even faster than it already does with the printing of religious texts.

  • Our wise thinkers should look into the field of Astronomy, the knowledge of which would allow us to traverse the great ocean and explore what lies beyond this continent we live on.

  • Kirrha is a constantly growing metropolis and newly designated centre of Delphi's cultural life. To allow for the city to continue supporting its current and future artists, a caravan route should be set up sending excess food from Dostana's granaries to Kirrha.

  • Much like Kirrha is a haven for our kingdom's artists, Delphi Nova should become a centre of science and learning. As the city grows, new neighbourhoods should be established exclusively for scholars in connection to the Royal University of Delphi.

  • Gardens should be built in Kirrha and Delphi Nova for artists, scholars, and other citizens to enjoy - a breath of nature in the middle of these two grand cities which will serve to help Delphians reach their full potential.

  • The last stretch of the Kirrhan-Apollonian road should be laid down as soon as possible to connect the newly rebuilt city of New Apollonia to the rest of Delphi, allowing for faster travel between all corners of this kingdom. Workers should also be sent to complete the unfinished farmland outside Apollonia that was abandoned during the civil war.

  • Buying the Copper resource west of Alexandropolis would allow our workers to build a mine there, which the relocated aristocrats-turned-labourers of Baan Baan Koo can work for more lucrative yields - allowing them to keep their status as a voting neighbourhood.

  • A Colosseum should be built in Alexandropolis so that we upon its completion, when all cities have one, can build the Circus Maximus - an even greater arena for the entertainment of thousands of Delphians.

  • The cities of Soukotai and Alexandropolis should after constructing Colosseums be allowed to complete construction projects the cities were working on before annexation, a University in Soukotai and a Workshop in Alexandropolis.

Just so you know, Protestantism wouldn't be a heresy of Hellenism, heresy is reserved for things like Catharism or the Bahá'í. The more accurate term would be heathens :D .

Yeah, you're right. Edited that to say heathen religion instead of heresy.

Another OOC note while I'm on it is that when the twins say to acquire Printing Press through "trade or espionage" that means to steal the tech - I just thought it looked weird to say that outright in a public campaign, even the current wording seems a little too detailed in case there were Chinese people following the campaign. :p

I agree with the twins on much of their position. They are rational people, at least as far as I can tell from this. But they are not perfect.

  • Trade throughout Delphi is lacking. We can make ourselves more wealthy and powerful than ever. Trade routes should be extended to to Quebec and Zurich, as well as any other entity with whom trade would be as lucrative. In addition, our wealth can be secured by a system of banks and caravansaries in all of our cities. Trading posts should be constructed near our cities, especially the city of Kirrha.
  • Our religion has begun to grow in influence over the world, but we can increase its security by the construction of Shrines in any city that lacks them, most importantly Dostana and Soukotai.
  • I will continue my fathers plans to make Apollonia the most fortified city in the world. Wall construction must begin soon.
  • With the twins I agree most heartily with their war plans. The Dutch are weak. They are Heathens. We have a grand opportunity here, and our Great General at Alexandropolis will lead our brave soldiers to victory.

Stathis speaks of many good things, but he is lacking perspective. What is the use for caravanseries in all cities when we only have a limited number of trade routes to send out? There is already a caravansery in our capital and that should be enough, let our cities focus on other more rewarding construction projects such as gardens, universities, or shrines like Stathis himself suggested. The Neo-Dualist Party agrees that Shrines are vital to our religion and promise to build one in Dostana, but finishing the Colosseum and University should take precedence in Soukotai.

We also agree with Stathis that more trading posts should be built, but Kirrha's land is mostly improved already and what space is left should be used for more farmland to support its growing population. A better place for trading posts is up north, especially in the jungles outside Soukotai - building trading posts there would not only bring in gold but with a university in the city also open up for scholars to research the fauna and flora of the rainforest.

The trade route between Delphi Nova and Beijing has soon run its course and so its traders need a new mission to go on. The route to China will be too dangerous when we go to war with the Netherlands and so instead they shall open up trade with Te-Moak in the Shoshone Republic - a trade route that would bring in more science and more gold than the trade route Stathis suggests. A trade route to Te-Moak would give us 14 gold while one to Quebec and Zurich would give us only nine or eight, why should we settle for trade routes of lesser worth than we can get?

To expand upon my previous statements:

A trade route with our allies would serve to strengthen our relationship. The Shoshone, although wealthy, are not our friends, and so not people we want to help.

To build a trading post in the jungle would need to the complete deforestation of the area. That would render it useless to any scholars present.

Caravansaries in all cities is an ultimate goal. They are inexpensive and can be very useful when more trade routes are able to be supported. As a short term goal though, a caravansary should be built in Kirrha, which would be useful for future trade with our Vassals.

In addition, a modernization of our military (with the exception of remaining siege towers ((their promotion doesn't persist after upgrade))) is something that needs to be implemented before the invasion can take place.

A trade route to Shoshone would help ourselves on a much greater scale than it would help the Shoshone, and trading with them will keep any hostilies from the northeast at bay while our armies are focused elsewhere. We don't want for Delphi to be involved in a war on several fronts, and what does it matter if the Shoshone earn a few coins when the difference for us is much higher?

As for trading posts in the jungle - no, you do not need to cut down the jungle in order to build a trading post. It takes time to build them, yes, but trading posts are fully capable of being built in jungles without complete deforestation much like lumber mills in forests. ((OOC: trading posts can be built in forests and jungles without removing the feature. Trading post + jungle + university + Free Thought policy (1 science to trading posts) is awesome.))

You are very much right about the modernisation of our army which should happen as soon as possible. Siege towers are much better kept in their original state than rebuilt to trebuchets. We agree on that point.

Okay, so I'm back earlier than expected.

If I have both players' consent I might close polls early and get the Fifth Synedrion sworn in.

Any objections?

Edit: Disregard, doing something else instead. :)

We in the Neo-Dualist Party believe that religion is an important cornerstone in everyday life and Delphian culture, and it is our priests who uphold this tradition. Priestly representation in this kingdom's government has decreased rapidly over the last forty years - from 4/11 votes in the first Synedrian election down to 9/59 in this upcoming one. We want to strengthen the voice of Delphian priesthood and promise to do what we can to increase the franchise of priestly neighbourhoods if our faction is given the Chief Minister post.

Polls have closed and votes are presently being counted. I hope to have the results announced before this time tomorrow. :)

The Basileus looked over the results with a deep frown on his face. The outcome of the election had not yet been announced publicly; the monarch retained his royal right to learn of the results before they were publicised.

He had concerns that the new electoral system being employed in the neighbourhoods to return their Synedroi to the Synedrion was going to throw up results that might be closer than they really should be. But he let it be for now; that was for his royal secretary to investigate on his behalf.

The final result in the election had been close. Very close.

This was the first two-faction contest in Synedrian history and it was the tightest result ever.

He just now had to figure out how he was going to accommodate the request to swear in two co-chief ministers.

-------------------

Yes, Gurra has clung onto government --- just! As the Basileus's thoughts indicated, I'm concerned the new proportional system in each neighbourhood I've chosen will result in closer contests than they should be. If it becomes problematic I'll scrap it in favour of a more appropriate electoral system.

At any rate, here are the results!

Delphian Synedrion election, 200

An election was held to choose members of the 5th Delphian Synedrion in 200. It was the fifth Synedrian election held in the Kingdom of Delphi. Suffrage was predominantly limited to the upper class of all cities, specifically the aristocracy and the priesthood as well as the two middle-class artistic neighbourhoods in Kirrha and a sole lower-class labouring neighbourhood in Alexandropolis who had formerly been aristocrats.

Results of the Delphian Synedrian election, 200

Franchise: All aristocratic, priestly and artistic neighbourhoods in the kingdom eligible to vote in the elections, as well as one single labouring neighbourhood. Cities administered by the capital returned two Synedroi for each neighbourhood while cities with self-government each returned only one Synedros per neighbourhood.

Fellow Synedroi, Neo-Dualists and Stathites! As newly appointed co-Chief Minister of Delphi I, Lysimachos Siomaios, present to the Synedrion our orders. Please consider them carefully.

Priestly Voting Act

(1) Neighbourhoods with priestly voters shall return to the Synedrion one extra seat in addition to their base number of seats.

Military Modernisation Act

(1) All Swordsmen and Spearmen regiments shall immediately be upgraded to Longswordsmen and Pikemen regiments.

(2) All Chariot Archer regiments shall as soon as possible be upgraded to Knight regiments, prioritising the one currently outside New Apollonia.

War Orders Act

(1) Move the Delphian Army northwards and set up camp north of Soukotai near but not immediately next to the Delphian-Dutch border.

(2) Hire an Inquisitor in the Hellenic city closest to the Netherlands when our faith threshold reaches 300.

(3) Declare war on the Netherlands when the caravan between Delphi Nova and Shanghai has returned to the capital and finished its trade route.

(a) If the Netherlands however ask about the presence of armies close to their border before that, respond truthfully and declare war.

(4) Great General Pompey will be given supreme command of the Delphian Army, but he needs to abide to a general war plan set out by the Synedrion as follows.

(a) The goal of this war is to siege all Dutch cities and put the Netherlands under the control of Delphi.

(b) Amsterdam and Utrecht shall upon conquest be integrated as self-governing cities of the Kingdom, as the first holds great treasures and the latter a very good strategic position.

(i) An Inquisitor shall be sent to Amsterdam to remove any remnants of Protestantism, and to declare that it is not a holy city.

(c) Rotterdam shall upon conquest be razed to the ground as it has no valuable resources or buildings.

(i) Sell a building in Rotterdam every year, if possible, until it is fully razed.

(d) Make sure to protect all and any Delphian civilians who are working or are on the move near the war zone to avoid their capture by Dutch forces.

(e) If anything unexpected happens the Synedrion must be contacted for advice on the situation.

Urban Development Act

(1) Move one of Delphi Nova's mining neighbourhoods to work the cattle pasture three tiles east of the city.

(2) Upon population growth in Delphi Nova, establish new scholar neighbourhoods in connection to the city's University.

(3) Upon completion of the Sistine Chapel in Delphi Nova, build a Garden.

(4) Upon population growth in Kirrha, establish new artist neighbourhoods in connection to the city's Artists' Guild.

(5) Upon completion of the Artists' Guild in Kirrha, train a Caravan and then build a Garden.

(6) Upon population growth in Dostana, establish a new farmer neighbourhood one tile northwest of the city.

(7) Upon completion of the University in Dostana, build a Shrine and then a Workshop.

(8) Upon population growth in New Apollonia, establish a new labourer neighbourhood one tile southeast of the city.

(9) Send out the Work Boat in New Apollonia to fish Crabs when the city's borders expand to new crab waters southwest of the city.

(a) Move a farmer neighbourhood to work on these new fishing boats.

(10) Move the neighbourhood Baan Kaw Ken in Soukotai to work the farm one tile southwest of Baan Huai Gaang.

(11) Upon completion of the Colosseum in Soukotai, build a University.

(12) Buy the Copper hill three tiles west of Alexandropolis and move Baan Baan Koo to work it when it has been mined.

(13) Upon population growth in Alexandropolis, work the grasslands two tiles south of the city.

(14) Build a Colosseum in Alexandropolis, and upon its completion build a Workshop.

Rural Development Act

(1) The Worker standing idle by the river east of Kirrha shall build a Copper mine west of Alexandropolis.

(2) The Workers east of Soukotai shall build a road to connect the Delphian road system to the Dutch.

(a) The road shall pass through Baan Chong Ma and Baan Non Buan.

(b) When they are done, one Worker shall build a trading post in the jungle east of Baan Chong Ma and the other shall continue building a farm two tiles east of Soukotai.

(3) The Worker northwest of Dostana shall build a trading post on the road between Alexandropolis and Muang Saluang, one tile east of Baan Na Gaang.

(4) The Worker building a Salt mine east of New Apollonia shall when they are done build a farm one tile west of Kirrha.

(5) The Worker working on the road between Kirrha and New Apollonia shall finish that road, and then move on to finish the abandoned farmland southwest of New Apollonia.

(6) The Worker building a farm south of Alexandropolis shall when they are done cut down the forest southeast of Alexandropolis and build a farm on that tile.

Diplomacy and Trade Act

(1) Sell Copper to Poland in exchange for 5 gold per turn.

(2) Sell Cotton to China and promise them a Yea vote on Cultural Heritage Sites in exchange for 6 gold per turn.

(3) Denounce the Netherlands effective immediately.

(4) When our Caravan returns from Shanghai, send it on a new trade route to Te-Moak.

(5) When a new Caravan is trained in Kirrha, send it on a trade route carrying food from Dostana to Kirrha.

Research and Espionage Act

(1) Agent Ninurta in Beijing shall at next opportunity steal the technology of the Printing Press.

(2) Upon completion of Chivalry research, our wise thinkers shall move on to research other technology depending on the success of Agent Ninurta.

(a) If Agent Ninurta succeeds in stealing Printing Press technology, our wise thinkers shall look into Astronomy, followed by Banking.

(b) If Agent Ninurta fails to steal Printing Press technology, our wise thinkers shall research the Printing Press themselves, followed by Astronomy.

((Just a bit of clarification here))
Finally, I propose the
Religious Monuments Act
(1) Upon the growth of the treasury to apporopriate amounts, a Shrine will be purchased in Dostana.

I vote Yes on all orders I proposed

We vote No on the Modified Urban Development Act as the Garden in our opinion is of much more use to the city and our Kingdom as a whole. The Caravansary in Delphi Nova is more than capable of handling our existing trade routes, and a Garden would greatly increase the growth of our artist communities. The Neo-Dualist Party would rather investigate the use of cargo ships when the need for new international trade routes open up in the future.

We vote Yes on the Modified Rural Development Act, that desert land is better used for a trading post than how it is currently not used at all. For now it might not yield much but in the future a trading post in that location can be very valuable.

We vote No on the Modifed Trade and Diplomacy Act, that food Caravan is crucial for Kirrha to grow sufficiently for supporting its population.

We vote Yes on the Modified Research and Espionage Act as it is indeed our goal to research Banking after Astronomy even in the case of scenario B. We are however very confident that Agent Ninurta will not fail to carry out their operation, and believe that discussing this further is hypothetical at best.

Lastly we vote No on the Religious Monuments Act, a Shrine is built fast and Dostana has the means to do it soon enough. A Shrine will be built in due time, let us be patient.
