The last week had left him feeling more deflated and worn out than he could ever remember. And he used to be a warrior in his younger days, which meant he was feeling very weary indeed.
His lifelong friend's death had left him feeling joyless and numb. His characteristic humour was muted and for all he knew had died along with Melodas, the former Basileus.
It had been a hard week, with not even time to mourn before taking up a political fight with the Delphian Council, the corrupt and stalwart aristocratic body that governed the elective monarchy of the kingdom. In accordance with a law passed by the previous Synedrion and acceded to by the late Melodas, the Council should have accepted the crown passing from Melodas to his eldest son Phrenos, but they refused. The political uncertainty had left the kingdom on the verge of civil war.
It was only when the former Chief Minister, Leonidas of the Siamese was proposed to become Dictator of Delphi to sort out the business did the Council back down --- a former Siamese prince as Dictator of the kingdom was anathema to them, and acceding to the lesser ill of allowing a son to succeed his father was seen as more tolerable.
Why had he fought so hard to install his friend's son on the throne? Why not allow the Council to restore the elective monarchy? He really felt he owed it to the memory of his dead friend, who had been almost a brother to him since both their fathers perished in that awful day so many years ago. He felt his friend deserved to have a dynasty that would last throughout the ages, so people in the future would remember his name.
Melodas hadn't been particularly old; he was definitely younger than Phrenios was. In fact, Phrenios had been grooming his own son to replace himself as royal secretary, but those plans were put on indefinite hold now that Melodas's son was the new Basileus --- the younger monarch would need all the help and support Phrenios could muster.
-----
The newly crowned Basileus of the Delphian and Siamese peoples, Phrenos Melodopoulos felt suddenly very small and overawed. Despite being old enough to have a wife and family of his own, he suddenly felt woefully inadequate and not up to the task of ruling the kingdom.
His late father Melodas had prepared him to rule after him, but he had never expected his father to die so young. Even after a week he could scarcely believe he was truly gone. He kept expecting him to walk into the room at any moment. They said he had clutched at his arm and chest before succumbing. The learned men said it was a natural death. Phrenos hoped it had been quick.
The kingdom was very divided. That the previous Synedrion had passed a law allowing the Siamese aristocracy a say in the makeup of the next Synedrion had rent apart Delphian society, while at the same time had succeeded in blunting the hatred the Siamese bore toward their conquerors.
His father's old royal secretary, Phrenios, whose father's namesake Phrenos bore in his honour and memory, was trying to guide him through the process of becoming Basileus.
Phrenos found it hard to concentrate sometimes, and his attention drifted in and out. What was his aged mentor saying now?
". . . as the Syendrion was automatically dissolved with your father's death there is currently no government. We therefore need a new government. If you order me to organise fresh elections you can form a new Synedrion and pick a new Chief Minister."
Phrenos tried to look as regal as his royal title indicated as he looked at his much older secretary in the eyes and spake: "So be it."

Okay, so after a brief bit of turbulence we're back on track.
Now, everyone should take note that we have plenty of possible specialist citizen slots that could be taken advantage of should any players wish to do so. It will make big changes to the political landscape.
I'll post the neighbourhood attitude updates in a separate post.
Here are some images to help orient players old and new:
Before anyone starts their campaign bids they might want to wait for the hints: I'll be sending those through tomorrow (run out of time tonight).Edit: Change of plans; I'll get the hints out shortly Each player will receive a number of hints about neighbourhood dispositions, attitudes and wants which may help inform your campaign.
But for now here are the current neighbourhood attitudes. As you can see the decision to grant the Siamese aristocracy a vote in the Syendrian elections has drastically changed the political landscape.
Note that only priestly and aristocratic neighbourhoods vote in the Synedrian elections.
Also note that eligible Delphian neighbourhoods return two Synedroi to the Synedrion each while eligible Siamese neighbourhoods return only one each.
If any player wants to relocate their home neighbourhood, now is the time. If you're new (Wyverncraft) you won't yet have a home neighbourhood: pick any aristocratic or priestly neighbourhood to give yourself a significant bonus in it. Agos and Loquia are currently taken and therefore ineligible unless either of the players using them as their home neighbourhoods relocate.

Okay, for anyone who wants to know where the neighbourhoods are exactly located in our cities, here are some images highlighting where they are.
Specialist citizens are considered to be dwelling in the urban environs of the city centre, but are considered to be separate neighbourhoods from the urban neighbourhoods proper.
Fishing neighbourhoods don't actually live in the water p) they live on the coast nearest to their fishing waters.
Some trivia that might interest any Delphi Novans: the neighbourhood of Telos was originally founded by survivors of a lost civilisation discovered in ruins by Delphi's earliest explorers back at the dawn of the Delphian Tribe. Obviously they're as Delphian as any other resident in the capital after all these years, but that is why the name of their neighbourhood means "far" or "distant place".
The following is a 10 point list of plans and goals for the Delphian Kingdom which I, Leonidas Siomaios, will seek to accomplish if re-elected for another term as Chief Minister.
*Kirrha needs Writers to make full use of the city's newly established Writer's Guild. In order to do that the city requires more neighbourhoods and at least one of them to be a centre for cultural activity. ((OOC: grow Kirrha and use that Writer specialist slot.))
*To bring Apollonia up to Delphian standards, the city requires further development. All forests within the city's borders should be cut down as soon as possible to allow for quicker completion of the ongoing Workshop project - which in turn will give the Apollonia a sizable boost to long-term production.
*Keeping with the development of Apollonia a road should be built from Kirrha to Apollonia, connecting the city to our already existing road network to make for faster travel to the western lands of Delphi aswell as increased gold income as Apollonia grows.
*Happiness must be valued above all, by satisfying our citizens' access to resources and leisure activities we will ensure the stability of this kingdom and the approval of the people. A Colosseum should be built in Apollonia to allow for the construction of a Circus Maximus - an arena of arenas - when there are Colosseums in all Delphian cities.
*Delphi needs a continued focus on science and research. It is estimated our wise thinkers will have unlocked the secrets of Education in four years, which will allow for the construction of Universities. These learning institutions should be constructed throughout our kingdom, beginning with Delphi Nova and Kirrha as soon as they finish their work on a National College and National Epic respectively.
*Upon completed research of Education practices, our wise thinkers should turn their heads to Acoustics. Delphi can't build a dominant culture solely on the art of writing, and the teachings of Acoustics would allow us to flourish in music and art.
*While Delphi is currently at peace, our military needs to be overseen. We have a severe lack of ranged units and Dostana's defenses are currently inexistent. To begin with, one unit of Composite Bowmen should be trained in Dostana after the completion of Stone Works before moving on to a University.
*The project initiated by me in the last Synedrion to finish construction on abandoned farms should be continued by completing at least one of the two farms still left unfinished in Siamese lands.
*Trading posts should be constructed around Delphi Nova and Dostana to increase our gold income from trade.
*Hellenism lies at the very core of Delphian culture, and should be the dominant religion within the Delphian Kingdom and its sphere of influence. If a Great Prophet is born we should urge them to actively spread the faith in Kirrha, Apollonia, Si Satchanalai, and Sukhothai, while letting religious pressure passively convert the cities of Quebec, Zurich, and Muang Saluang.
*Gift all of Delphi's money to China. "No, Lysimachos, don't touch your father's documents, this is all very serious!"
It won't matter. If you're talking about things nationally or internationally, all neighbourhoods will find out about it (word of mouth or carrier pigeons, I guess!).
If you're talking about things that only affect some neighbourhoods or a particular city only those who would be affected will pay attention.
Edit: To clarify, from a roleplaying sense you can have your character give speeches wherever they want, but on a game mechanical level it doesn't matter where you say it (unlike, say, Realpolitik of the Smoky Skies where that does have a game mechanic implication).
Now you remembered me of something I saw on Magicka 2 (awsome game btw, I heartily advise this game to everyone, also, if anyone ever decides to play it, pm me cause me and my gf love it).
One of the people you visit uses a carrier bird system where they are catapulted by a balista and have 140 character limit. We should totally have that in the kingdom with catapults
People of Delphi, I come to you as a newcomer. A speaker of the people. A politician. I offer my time, and my voice, as yours, so as to give you power and justice in our world. I will right the wrongs that exist, and make even greater the rights. I will bring back our rightful and hard-earned Delphian dominance over the world, and those we have conquered, and make it ever larger. By this I swear. Delphi will be born anew, born free of some evils, and with hope to suffocate the rest. People of Delphi, let me guide you.
Without giving away details about whether this is good or bad news, the neighbourhoods by and large aren't ambivalent toward Eurydice Nepides any more.
Delphians, I have faithfully served you for the past 20 years as Synedros and Chief Minister to Basileus Melodas. During my term Delphi, among other things, rid herself of the status as the world's least technologically advanced country - a position now held by the Netherlands - and with the help of our wise thinkers, and not to forget our spies, we will keep climbing all the way to the top.
Dominance is a multifaceted word. Even greater than military dominance is cultural and scientific dominance, because lives are spared - most importantly the lives of our own men - and there will be millions of people in this world looking up to us and wish they lived in the Delphian Kingdom. Let me guide Delphi towards a golden age of science and culture, rather than fall behind in progress just to slaughter our unworthy neighbours. Let me show the world how wonderful Delphi is and have them awe over our great treasures. Let me lead Delphi into greatness by our own cultural strength and the world will weaken all on its own.
