The Turkish Thread

1. Civ name should be Turkey. as it also reflects BOTH TWO turk dominions in the early middle ages, Ottoman Empire, and later after 1921, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's modern republic we see today (He kept Constantinople a definite Turk city and denied Greeks (whom always claimed that 'Byzantion is theirs, and Turks are still vile, dirty, barbaric robbers') their Big Idea to have ones)
2. UU. Janissary (Pike and Shot replacements) and Nizam i Cedit Infantry (Fusilier replacements, Upgrades directly from Janissary)... I don't agree with 'Giant Bombards' either because they didn't use these big guns often. They simply NEEDED ones to break open Constantinople super thick walls that designed to resist earthquakes in addition to enemy attacks.
If you don't agree with Nizam I-Cedit. then
Spakh. (Turkish lancers) but should they be 'light' or 'heavy' cavalry?
3. Also i don't really agree with Barbary Pirates being their UU Either, their ships--the Xebecs (Fast galley, and later all sail ships with guns--proto frigates)-- were also available to Christian states (France, Spain and maybe even Portugal) either as prize ships or copies... even American Continental Navy had one!!)

Poor Atatürk; it seems to be his lot in history to be forcibly associated with the empire he hated. I have no objection to calling the civ Turkey, Turkomans, or Oghuz, but mostly because I wouldn't mind seeing Seljuq elements included, perhaps including Alp Arslan as an alternate leader. Joking aside, I agree that, whether Atatürk liked it or not, modern Turkey was a continuation of Turkoman civilization, though I have little interest in including elements of modern Turkey. As is well known, I dislike including modern leaders, but if we include a 20th century Middle Eastern nationalist leader, Reza Shah Pahlavi is my first choice (though Atatürk would be the second--and really the only other possibility as Gamal Nasser of Egypt and Abdullah I of Jordan are burdened with less significant states and Saddam Hussein is burdened with being...well, Saddam Hussein).

Counter argument: that others were imitating it is a compliment and probably a good argument for being an Ottoman UU--or perhaps a Moroccan UU, if they were to return.

Hah, I literally put that as a Moroccan UU before I even saw this. :)

That being said Barbary Corsairs still obviously make sense as well.

I'd definitely go for the Janissary, and the Great Bombard if they got a second one.

IF people don't like the Great Bombard, the Turks were also the first to use Mortars to attack towns directly - a Siege Weapon that fires over the walls and degrades, say, the garrison Units or structures/Districts inside the town.
The Koreans had the "gourd-shaped mortar" at the beginning of the 15th century, but this appears to have been used more as a low-velocity cannon, while the Siege of Constantinople not only saw the Ottomans use a Great Bombard, but also mortars that "fired (one) ton shots a mile high" that smashed buldings in the middle of the city.

Historical facts about Janissary. Were they Elite Guard or Early Regular Army?
And tell me about Israelys from European Total War which was somewhat comparable to Linear Infantry/Fusilier/Foote?
