The valiant deeds of King Arthur - A King Arthur AAR by King Arthur

- Merlin and forging an alliance with the Welsh

The Welsh would be a useful ally.

- Conqering/repelling Viraconium

We will definitely need help against Viraconium and the Welsh are next to it iirc.

- Conquering East Mercia and finishing off King Offa

- Caradoc and forging an alliance with the Saxons
The Saxons are foreign invaders and should not be trusted.

Oh yes, upgrade our Archers. Perhaps we can make the bows larger, well call 'em Longbows! I'm a genius! We should also have brussels sprouts for dinner.

We should sit tight for a year and build up our armies :D

Hah, says the mage who doesn't know magic. With larger armies we can do MORE conquering! Plus I like having some cannon fodder so my elites don't get beat up too bad

So it is decided to ally ourselves with the Welsh, rather than the Saxons. As Merlin is waiting in Viroconian territory, they will have to be dealt with first, however. Sir Scamp marches towards their kingdom. Sir Cardgame is ordered to finish off the remains of King Offa's army and conquer East Mercia. Sir Omega is sprouted to death:

The sprouting of Sir Omega.

Since it would be a shame to lose suck a talented mage, a nearby druid reanimates him afterwards. If all cognitive capabilities are fully restored remains to be seen, but he certainly has an aversion against Brussel sprouts now, which is a good first sign.

King Offa and East Mercia

Conquering East Mercia turned out to be a breeze. The remaining army offered little resistance, and the province was taken without further incidence.

We can now win these battles without losing half of our army!

East Mercia und its rightful ruler.

King Cadeyrn of Viroconium

King Cadeyrn is kind enough to divide his forces between his knights, so that what was a giant, intimidating, cake, turns into several tasty and digestible cake slices. Sir Scamp can't help himself but take a bite out of the first one in reach. This also serves as a test of how Sir Omega handled his sprouting. Quite well, it turns out:

When it rains fire and poison, at least you don't have to worry about dying from the later.

The battle itself is won by using the archers as a bait to lure the Viroconian forces into an ambush. I'm amazing that it worked - they must have copied my earlier tactics!

Infantry and cavalry waiting for the right time to attack.

Somehow the pagan Viroconians have managed to recruit plenty of Christian and Saxon troops. This along with their large army and few provinces makes me wonder what goes wrong in the administration of my kingdom.

Saxon cavalry under King Caderyn's banners? They must have gotten lost. Not too bright, those Saxons.

In another battle the enemy charges right into the choke-point. I like it when my enemy makes my tactical decisions for me.

We dispatch a few more armies, until King Caderynis down to one army. This battle quickly becomes confusing, as both sides seem set to ambush the other in the woods. This leads to a game of hide and seek, which is intensified after the Viroconian hero conjures up fog.

What happens when two armies ambush one another?

Not the best terrain for archers.

We eventually come out ahead, no doubt due to my years of training in hide and seek. Viroconium is captured without incident afterwards.

Now would be a good time to surrender.

Internal affairs

Merlin seems like a patient guy, so i decide to postpone the meeting for a while. Especially since our kingdom is suddenly hit by one natural disaster after another. It gets to the point where i am forced to split up the armies and have the individual heroes rush to aid the affected provinces and protect my income. To keep this from happening, research is focused on disaster prevention for quite some time.

Unit upgrades slip to the back of the priority queue, as a series of quests and adventures puts us on good enough terms with the Sidhe to be able to recruit some of their warriors. And those kick butt!

The quests started after a messenger from the Lady of the Lake suggested that i recruit knights for my round table. Does she take me for a fool?! While i'm still angry over having my wasted by such nonsense, i suddenly get a flurry of reports on possible recruits. Have my aides been sitting on them for all this time? Unbelievable. What does one have to do to get some competent underlings?

The first knight is called Sir Dagonet and lives in a maze. Whoever finds his way through it, gets his services. Many have tried, but all failed. It seems none of them have thought to bring pen and paper:

It almost feels like cheating.

Sir Dagonet is impressed and joins up, after asking why i want to be king. Some spell prevents me from stating the truth - that i am king because it is my birthright - so i lie that i want to be king to bring prosperity and peace. He seems happy with that.

Then i hear of Sir Percivale, who is held in some castle. Once we get there, his captor offers to joins us, if we keep Sir Percivale locked up. Sounds good to me! Thus Sir Bedivere joins the Round Table.

Having collected those two, we receive news that a hermit wishes to speak with us. Sir Cardgame rides to meet him, only to find out that he was captured by the Unsidhe and is held in the Deepforest. Well, he can wait.

At the same time, we hear of a Sidhe called Smiling Prince stealing children. I am incensed. Stealing prospective taxpayers is almost as bad as stealing taxpayers! Sir Scamp follows his tracks until he finds him. The Prince offers to return the children without a fuss if we can answer three questions. I like riddles, so i accept. Unfortunately there is only one real riddle and two boring knowledge questions, none of which are hard. Disappointing, but at least we get the children back, along with some artifacts, which the Prince hands over after being wowed by our performance.

After this i feel ready to go see Merlin, but am once again interrupted. A bandit called the "Wolfman" is plundering West Mercia. Sir Cardgame is ordered to deal with him. Once he meets him, it becomes clear that the name is justified - the guy has an army of wargs.

nrLnw.png

Bad doggie!

Those wargs prove more dangerous than anything King Cegwyn could muster. Sir Cardgame takes heavy casualties, but the Wolfman is eventually tamed. Being in the area, Sir Cardgame is approached for yet another child rescue mission. Some local lord had his daughter abducted by the Sidhe, and wants her back. He had already send a knight after her, but he didn't come back. He suggests we might be able to recruit him, if we run into him on our way to his daughter.

Sir Cardgame starts the search, and soon learns that the girl is kept in a Sidhe castle. At the bridge to it, Sir Bors - the missing knight - is waiting. He must have been bewitched, as he insists on defending it. Sir Cardgame gives him the old knock-on-head treatment until he thinks straight again and readily joins our noble cause. On the way back Sir Cardgame remembers about the girl, so they turn back and rescue her from the Sidhe.

Then it's finally time to meet Merlin. Sir Scamp gathers the four strongest knights in the realm, along with our best troops and rides to the meeting. Merlin says an enemy has risen in the north; a witch queen which is preparing to conquer our kingdom! What's worse, she has send an army to make an alliance with the Welsh! Nonsense, i say, there's no queen - this is Sir Kan's doing! He even dared me to try for an alliance with the Welsh. The nerve! But i'll cross his plans yet and crush the northern army before it can reach the Welsh king.

Easier said than done, as this army is composed of ugly bloodthirsty giants and ugly bloodthirsty Vikings! Vikings! We prevail, but lose five regiments of our best troops and all the battle paintings i made. Merlin then arranges a meeting with the Welsh king, where i explain to him that his alliance with the north is off, and that he better side with me or i'll destroy him.
Despite being furious, he agrees for the time being. Which is a very good thing, because he could have quite easily wiped out our weakened main host.

The losses sting, but at least we are able to replace them with Sidhe and Welsh longbowmen. Even untrained, they are almost as strong as our lost regiments were. You have to wonder why the Welsh and Sidhe haven't conquered England yet. Or the Saxons, for that matter, as their cavalry is absurdly strong.

As if the Saxon king had read my mind, he declares war the moment our alliance with Wales has been formed. Good thing that our undefended stronghold borders his kingdom. Whose idea was it to place it there again?

So Sir Kan wins, right? I mean, if King Arthur isn't updating, then he must have died in the field of battle and is unable to write about his adventures? :mischief:

:bump:
