Yes, it is indeed purported to be the image of Jesus.

It seems very, very unlikely to be so - given the evidence of carbon dating.

I suppose it comes down to how much interest your friends have in what is true.

Then just nod sagely*. And keep quiet. Or point them to wikipedia.

*I do a lot of this - it's quite easy.

Maybe it is. But it's certainly not unknown in Europe, by any means.

I don't see how one could draw any conclusion from it.

Doubt, for me, is the recognition of my own fallibility. I don't see this as a bad thing.

Those who have such faith that it's tantamount to certainty, do a lot of harm in the world, in my opinion (such as it is).

The Hospitaller's quote from Kingdom of Heaven springs to mind.

“I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of God. I've seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness. What God desires is here [the head] and here [the heart] and what you decide to do every day will make you a good man...or not.”

I like Kingdom of Heaven too because of Eva Green:

They took the information on the Shroud of Turin from Wikipedia.

It says on Wikipedia that the blood group is AB, which is what they said is more common in the Middle East then in Europe.

I don't know. They do also say that doubt is bad because it's the opposite of faith.

This is Eva Green's dafuq? face:

I shall make a meme out of it posthaste and it shall be my standard answer to everything your friends say.

It won't work, they're smarter than I am.

You were smart enough to ask further questions from more than just your first source.

Even if the shroud is proven to be from the Middle East, and even if the shroud is proven to be 2000 years old, that doesn't mean it's Jesus's image.

I don't know. They do also say that doubt is bad because it's the opposite of faith.

Faith is not an inherently good thing. Faith that following the teachings of Jesus is the proper way to live may very well be a good thing, but faith that the Turin shroud is an image of Jesus is most likely inconsequential. I cannot imagine a god, as spoken about by Jesus, that would care one way or another about your opinion of the Turin shroud.

They didn't mean the shroud when they said that. They meant how people like scientists doubt the existence of things because they can't find scientific proof.

Tell them the Church won't even officially acknowledge the bloody thing.
