Yeah they are solar panels, which makes no sense whatsoever. They should've made them radiators but asking them to use sensical scientific principles to explain space magik is pretty lame I guess. Midiclorians!
I don't understand why there is even this compulsion to explain everything. This isn't even Star Trek with its pretension of being more scientifically minded.

People who make scifi imagery have never learned that the concept of "form follows function" actually tends to work with scifi geeks. So they waste everyone's time just trying to make things that look cool. When they aren't making things try to seem both cool and familiar by grafting on things just because the ignorant public would find it more recognizable. So you have star destroyers with large superstructures and bridges well above the "deck" because, well, because that's the way some people expect to see ships look. :p
And that is a good thing, because despite its reputation, Star Wars wasn't created for the extreme scifi geek who actually knows these things, but for a general audience that needs recognizable imagery to relate to the events on screen (and if the scifi geek is honest, he does as well). People are used to naval ship to ship combat and WW1 dogfights, therefore capital ships and fighters follow these templates.

"Realistic" space battles would likely involve ships too far away from each other to ever fit on the same screen (or even visually see each other), and certainly no manned fighters whatsoever. Nobody would want to watch that.

In general, S-foils aren't about maneuverability, they're about heat dispersion in combat situations.
But that's the ex post explanation. I doubt the people who designed the models for ANH had that in mind.

What is wrong with the sentence "Graffiti as an act of vandalism is a crime"?

It's used as an example of a bad translation, but I can't see anything wrong with it. I guess it shows how stupid I am at English.
Are you sure it's because of bad English, and not just because it doesn't convey the meaning of the Japanese sentence correctly?

Dude, I had no trouble aiming my phaser toys straight at my little brother. I don't know what the hell you're even on a bout. :p
Of course you didn't. It's not in the movies. In the movies, all you see is the X-wings and B-wings and ARC-170s and Eta-2 interceptors popping open their wings. And they do that because it looks cool.
What I meant is I never came across it in my technical manuals or the novels I owned.
It also widens where the lasers are mounted.
wut?

B-wings? For some reason, we called them X-wings and Y-wings IIRC in the 70s... At least that is what all us kids called them when we doodled them. is the B-wing something different?

These cretins are talking about some kind of Star Wars book video game expanded fan fic thing. Leave them to their strange practices.

Moderator policy on postcount is a strange, inscrutable thing. I don't even know if it makes sense to them.
I'm clueless on it.

My question:
If you have been screwed out of some money by a large-ish firm (let's assume big enough to have lawyers on retainer), how do you sue them to get your money back? If the amount is a few hundred, it's not worth paying a lawyer yourself to recover it but if you sue yourself in small claims court, won't you get clobbered by their lawyers?

File complaint with BBB and related government agencies. Lawyers on retainer probably don't lower themselves to go to small-claims court. I wouldn't.
I won a suit against Maxtor for a HD that failed. I won $3000 and collected it.

I complained to Maxtor about the failed drive and requested my money back and compensation for recovering lost data. I got a form letter back that said "no way"and complained once more. They replied again saying no once more.
I files a small claims suit in Albuquerque and served Maxtor in California. that cost about $175. Lawyers are not allowed in small claims courts and submissions have deadlines. I carefully tracked all communication between maxtor and me as we tried to negotiate a settlement before the judge ruled. They failed utterly in the process. I was awarded the money and then they tried to not pay. So I sent all my notes and the ruling to the President and outlined the bad behavior of their CSR and in house attorney along with my detailed time line of events. I got my check in a week.

It took a while, but was very satisfying.

Because I'm an awful statist and have to do that. For more information, open a random GhostWriter post.

But you never actually hit him with it..... :mischief:
The hell you talkin bout? I went zaat and got him every time and he died. Or else he couldn't play with my friends and I.

It was a FOR SERIOUS Star Wars movie.

Edit: Oh I misread that "That was more like a Star Trek Movie" or something.

I like Star Trek better too. :)

Thank you. I will keep meticulous records as well, though most of my communications are over the phone and I don't know if I'm allowed to record conversations in MO. I had heard lawyers weren't allowed in Small Claims Court but I didn't know if that varied by state.

Interesting. I bought one of their crappy substandard disks that promptly had some kind of fatal error and wiped my data, despite reformatting multiple times it never worked.

Never bothered to get it fixed because I'm lazy but I could do with a few thousand.

Brb looking up warranty.

To prevent people from spamming their pc up. Many of the serial threads, such as What are you listening to? are one or 2 word posts and you can justify making 20 of those in a day.

I understand the archiving policy for some of those threads, but I think it's particularly wrong for the book threads. We've had some pretty substantial discussion there, and I've made several long-post book reviews that I think are at least as worthy of PC as some of the spam threads in this tavern.

Thank the Roberts Court.

Seriously, eff that guy.

In my case the judge ruled without any court appearances, just based on what was submitted. IIRC Maxtor didn't submit anything. My claim was based on the cost to recover my lost data by one of those specialty firms that takes them apart and tries to get the data from each platter plus my time at some high $/hr rate.

I had bought the new Maxtor drive to back up an existing HD. I copied my data to it and then deleted the info from the original drive (I needed space). The next day the Maxtor drive failed physically and I began my quest.

Yeah I know. Hence Dachs's quip earlier int he thread.

Whatcha gonna do? :dunno:

Hope a mod, maybe one that happens to view and post in this thread, notices this discussion and considers the proposal? :mischief:
I will suggest in staff that we let the book threads run past 1000 and not be archived anymore, unless you have a different idea.

Yes, and a useful feature that is, but only on the first two of those designs. ARC-170s and Eta-2s lack weapons on their S-foils. And chronologically, they "sort of" came first.

But how is it even useful? Energy delivered via lasers is most effective when concentrated, hence the reason why lasers exist. If the lasers are spread out they will not concentrate and thus power is wasted. Even if set to converge, the beams will only converge over a vary narrow distance and will then diverge wildly to the point that you are limiting the beam's effective range as it will miss past a certain distance.
Better than 2 giant bullseyes on your flanks.
Seen from above, below or at most angles other than head on or directly behind, the S Foils are a bigger bullseye than the tie fighters solar panels by virtue of being bigger. Head on and directly behing, the tie also comes out ahead by only having 2 panels versus 4 S Foils. From the side, the X Wing is also a bigger target. So no.

How dare you drag my spam to the level of your 'book threads'.
