The Welcome Center

Thanks Peter.
I will start reading up on stuff here before joining that game.

Hi @all, my name is Matti and i'm from austria (europe). I'm primarily here to read and learn from the pro's (as i wrote in the public thread), my sp-level is between king and emperor (depends on my mood :D). I also play PBEMs and DGs at the german civilization webring-forum civforum.de, where HUSch adverted this demogame. So now i'm here. ;)

PS: my english is quite bad, i hope you excuse.

:wavey: Hello Erpel!

Your English is fine - don't grade yourself too harshly ;)

Please contribute your opinions to the discussion, and ask lots of questions. It's the best way to learn... :)

Hello everybody
I'm Holger (but all my friends call me Howei), 44 years old and i'm living near Hamburg in Germany. My SP difficulty is Emperor/immortal.
HUSch said in the civforum that here is the place to learn how to play Pitboss. So now i'm here and hope to learn as much as possible (and certainly to improve my english :))

Hi Erpel :)

... so now we have 2 greeks and 2 romans...

and one Sozi :D

Hi, Howei

Now we 've a german party here. We can see what Pacal is good for our ISDG-Final.

Hi I’m Owen from England (or full name Owen Bevan Thomas thus the Owenbevt) I think I’m around a prince level player though I tend to play against Emperor AI and set myself up for a heroic last stand. I’m also very dyslexic so I’ll spell check my posts but please tell me if it puts the wrong word in and you don’t understand what I’m trying to say.
I’m a Master’s of Science student, studying energy efficient buildings which the UK is decades behind the rest of Europe in – the average German especially probably knows more about it then me even though I’m an expert by UK standards.

Maybe I’m being dum but i can’t work out what to do now, can I go and look at the game? If so I don’t know the network address etc. Dose all the voting etc. simply take place on this forum?

:wavey:
Hi Owen, and welcome to Civfanatics!

Here's a brief primer on how to look at the save:

Open the game into DirectIP, under the multiplayer menu.
Under Name, write: owenbevt [mad scientist]
Under Network Address, write: daveshack.dyndns.org:2057
there is no password

Once you connect to the server, choose the Mad Scientists. Our password is number5

Then you'll be in the game :)

When you're ready to leave the game, hit esc (or bring up the in-game menu) and choose Exit to Main Menu. If you alt-tab or something, the connection to the server might hang, which is bad.

VERY IMPORTANT: Do not do anything that can't be undone. For instance, don't move any units. Don't accept trade offers. Don't declare war on anyone. Do not END TURN!

What you may do:

Anything that's reversible.
If you want to play with a city's citizens and specialists, to see how many hammers or food you can get, that's fine. But make sure to REVERT everything to the state it was when you first opened the save. Every one of our cities is being maximized for the task at hand - one mis-placed citizen for a turn could mean we'll lose a turn on a tech or a settler!

You can look around on the map, check out the adviser screens, etc.

I think that pretty much covers it....

Most of all, get to know our place in the world - the more of us who are familiar with what's going on, the more productive our discussions will be.

Oh, yes - all discussions take place right here. There is a thread to discuss what to do with each upcoming turn, and individual threads to handle dipomacy with the other teams.

Hi!

I'm new here. I'm a 21 year old college student from New Jersey, USA. I've been a civ fan since it came out on SNES in like 95 and then moved on civ 2 on pc and all that fun stuff. I'm admittedly a 99.5% SP guy, so I have more or less no multiplayer experience! In Civ4/BtS I generally play on monarch but to be perfectly honest I have fairly little knowledge/skill in terms of running things with maximum efficiency and micromanaging everything to a T. As you can see from my join date, I registered like a few days ago for the sole purpose of joining this, though I've been aware of this and other civ sites for years now, but I never got involved in the community and honestly I never really even read strategy articles or things like that, hence why I have little micro/optimization efficiency as I never took the time to calculate things or read articles by people who calculated them for me! Plus I tend to be a very lazy player and rarely take the time to cycle through my cities to make sure they are working the proper tiles unless I notice a glaring problem.

So yeah, basically to sum up, I have no MP experience and virtually no expertise in 'getting the most out of each turn' or whatever, which I'm sure you're all thrilled to hear! But I've got enough spare time to devote at least some time each day to reading forums, catching up on what happened, etc. etc. though because of my lack of knowledge in MP and what's going on in the game currently, I'll probably spend most of my time here catching up on what's going on first and learning more about MP before I really start trying to offer my own ideas or giving my two cents on whatever is going on.

So you may not see me be super-active right away, but rest assured I'm spending time going back through the archives here and trying to catch up on what our situation is like in-game and such.

Looking forward to playing with you all!

Good and Welcome at the Mad Scientist.
I think we are divided in mad or scientist, only some are both. I wish you fun with us and the game.

Hej!
I am a 47 year old PhD Physical (Polymer) Chemist working for a medical device company in Sweden. If I am actually mad as well, I would be the last to know. Born in USA, naturalized Swedish many many years ago. Been on CFC forum a while, most active in Civ4/BtS GOTM/BOTM/SGOTM's. Also nearing Hall of Fame EQM on Monarch level, which is probably a level or two below where I am challenged in single player.

Before discovering xOTM's, I was involved in a MP ladder. I wasn't very good at building catapults quickly, however, and thus tired of (losing in) the single-dimensional type of MP games. I have never played a pitboss game and only have a vague idea how that works. From the game description it appears that demoMP games have a much fuller and richer spectrum of skills required (including diplomacy) than gamespy MP games quick speed, blazing turn timer, always war) tend to. I hope to find out, and improve my skills as well.

I'm wandering around the team subforum trying to get a feel for where the game stands now. If you can point me in directions that will help me catch up more quickly that'd be great. What decisions are currently being discussed, for example?

Hello, good to have a new player with ideas here.

All decisions are discussed
1. We are in union with 2 teams (Cav and Kaz) and have good relations to the other 2. But without good diplo, we lost standing there.
2. We are a little behind and I need a plan, what is the goal in 5-10 turns, and thereafter.

tip
Look in the game.
