Organizing yes, (Roc/Rox) but not drawing. I am totally worthless in graphics; basically, if you need stick figures, thats taxing my skills ;p

But if you want ideas for and what where, that I can help with. Sadly, I do have a life outside of Civving (I know right ;p), but since most of the other projects I was working on are finished/finishing up, I will be more than capable of donating some serious time to this.

OOC, do any of you guys know if there is a Mod being built for the George R.R. Martin series? I am 50:50 split on my love with this and that ;p

DOWN TO BEESWAX:

What do you need tree-wise? I do not have my books with me (but I do have the internet HALELUJAH!) so I should be able to help regardless.

Just gotta give me a direction ;p

I don't think you have to wait until all the units are done before you start plugging them in. You could go through the list and designate which units you would like to go with certain techs. Take a tech like I dunno, "militia" and then group together all the different militia we'll use with that tech. Or maybe something like Monarch's Personal Guard" and group some of those together... kinda like how iron working is a tech requirement for so many units in the regular game. I've tried to keep the list in an order that units are grouped together from defensive, to offensive, to archer/bowman, to mounted, to artlillery, to sea vessels if that helps. I'm trying to fill in the gaps as best I can, but it may still take a bit of time. I don't want to have the mod held up though because I can't finish up the units quick enough.

Oh... and on a different note, before I forget. I can put all the non-civ units into a folder and send it to you if you like? That way I can also make sure all the units have correct speeds and things like that.

Forgot...
So the trebuchet is a no go for artillery, but what about this bad boy from the Rise of Rome conquest?
Fire_catapult_attack.gif

and yes, the preview is a little quick :)

Its like a catapult on steroids ;p

That dude on load light and fire must be like fricken superman or somethin

It seems like the series is more concerned with the development of magical powers than it is with the development of new weapons. While it is pretty clear that Mat is going to come up with some crazy kind of cannon in a few books, I do not recall them really discussing siege warfare. Even those people at Crazy U in Carhienen (can you tell I havent read them in a few months?) havent really developed anything new (steam engine sorta, telescope, printing press). Wouldnt it make more sense to keep the changes in units and technology extremely limited?

Bah I need to go read how you guys are going to implement Rand and his whole Dragon Reborn spiel. It makes a huge difference if his civ is just him, two Aiel units, a couple of the Amigos, and perm-war with Tear and the Shadow... or if you handed him to some other civ (like Andor) and declared it to be good ;p

Argh. The most annoying part of making units is the animation! I just can't manage to get a realistic sword swish! Even with the tips Cam gave me! x.x

Oh well, I'll keep trying ;)

I have finished reading the entire thread... it took long time, but me want see what done!

Looks like you guys did a lot... A LOT... of your own units, which is ridiculously cool!

Rhye went through a lot of heartache trying to get people to help us make pictures and units since no one on the group knew how... I know you said you used "Poser5" and I have a copy of Flicster... I dont remember why... but I forget what the other program you mentioned was (and I also am totally lost on what this Poser5 thing is).

I figured I might as well ask someone who remembers what its like to start up how he got into unit creation ;p

BACK TO THE MOD: Now that I DO know what you did with Andor, I would like to make a suggestion. Since we only know fragments of history (post Aiel War, and even pre-Aiel War... and I mean the people with just the books, not the supporting literature), wouldnt it make more sense to set things up with Rand and a few support units near Tear, preparing to conquer it? Thats the point where the story really goes CIV ;p

It just would be cool to play as the Dragon Reborn, start with nothing but a BAD A$$ and then start kicking it ;p

Forsaken? You are gonna give them models right?

Getting the Seachan to invade Randland shouldnt be too hard. Has anyone here played the relatively recent scenario with post-Roman Britain? The solution used there to convince the Vikings to invade was to give them a 'super' unit that requires resources only found in the target areas. It wouldnt have to be a super unit per se, but it would have to be pretty good. The Vikings invaded with massive numbers to get it!

Tech tree stagnation solution for Seachan: Make most of the Randland techs flavor and optional, and then make two or three techs required all (and put most of the cool, powerful, Randland stuff in there). Then dont give the Seachan any unique techs (which will slow them down) until the third or fourth era (when it wont matter).

oK sorry I am just really excited. I noticed that all the major people in this mod put accuracy over gameplay. This makes me happy!

Hope I helped a little!

Those are some great suggestions Aeon. I hadn't played the post-Roman Britain scenarion... haven't played a full game since I began unit creation actually :), but that definitely helps with the Seanchan situation.

As for what I use in unit creation, Poser is the program that I use for about 99% of the whole process. It's a program from Curious Labs that takes 3D models, and allows you to animate them. It has a fairly simple interface, but just like anything else it takes some time getting used to. The others that I use are Paint Shop Pro (but any image editing program will do), Steph's Storyboard Builder, and Civ3FlcEdit (kind of a new version of flicster). Oh, and I use the PEdit program in Kinboat's signature to create my palettes.

I just really admired some of the work by other creators on this site and figured it was something I would like to do. There are a bunch of great programs out there, but the human units were always my favorite when playing civ, and Poser is the program of choice when dealing mainly with those. My first unit took me probably about a month to get finished as I'm sure Alerum and a couple other people around here can remember :) , but that was just because I'm such a perfectionist and I didn't want my first unit to be crap (especially since I really like the asha'man). Now units usually take me 2 days to finish, when I have a model ready to go and when I don't have too much other work. If you're interested in learning how, I'll help out as much as I can.

Vaerraent,
Just try not to get discouraged bud. Animation is always the toughest part. Still gives me fits from time to time. :) I'll check online later on today or this evening to see if you're around, and I'll do what I can to help if you'd like.

Sorry bud, I was out... and will be for the most part until this evening. I'll check online later, but if you run into any snags you can always just post here, pm or email me with the problem(s), and I'll try and shed some light if I can.

Just got back from a trip, and finally caught up.
Aeon, always glad to see some new faces. :) Welcome aboard!
About the Forsaken, I ordered Poser 4 and it should arrive in a few days. After I figure it all out I plan to start helping in the unit creation department. :) While they wouldn't be the first units I attempt, I have given thought to what could be done about them.
:crazyeye: And now for something completely different:
I'm pretty sure this is ressurecting an old debate, but I just came up with an idea for the Travel ability(Again I can't remeber if this has been said already) . It could be a varient of the Airdrop ability of the Paratrooper. Just make some new animations, change some Pediatext, and Abra-Kadabra: one Travel ability.
BTW CamJH, The Panarch's Legion is great! :goodjob:

The Airdrop ability will be part of "Travelling," the other half is the Re-base ability. Someone brought it up a while ago in another thread that you could give the Re-base ability to foot units... I tried it out, and have been using it ever since. See with Airdrop, you can land anywhere on the map within the Operational Range, but then you're stuck there unless you can make it to an airfield or another city with an airport, or you can make the long hike back. Now with the Re-base ability, it covers the other half of traveling. Wherever you are on the map, you can hit the rebase button and go back to any of your cities. It's kinda like how Rand had certain places/rooms in the cities under his rule marked aside for him to transport back to whenever he needed to.

As for picking up Poser, Awesome. With Vaerraent, you, and myself working on units, we should be able to really get cranking. :) I can't remember ever seeing three creators willing to work on a single mod at the same time, could be great. And just like with Vaerraent, if you've got questions or need some help, just let me know and I'll do what I can.

And thanks about the Panarch's Legion, glad you like it.

Oooh Yeah! I remember that now!
As for questions, I'm sure I'll have plenty. :D

EDIT: I started the following post earlier. But the answer was given during my typing as I had been called away from my PC. Please disregard. But I'll leave it intact. Just in case...... End Edit

Travelling: I know we've talked about it before. I don't remember if anything was decided. As far as moving the units long distances in one turn there are two options:
1. The airdrop method -- A legal procedure
Requires the use of a building and a flag on the specific unit. i.e. Ashaman, etc...
Limits travel to between cities with required building.

2. The "Travelling" / "Transporter" / "Teleporter" method -- An "illlegal" procedure
Requires a hacked editor and limits the mod to C3C.
Allows one turn transport to a city building or unit.

Which fits best with the series?

First, what are the rules regarding Travelling? Correct me if I'm wrong
1. Must have prior knowledge of the area to travel to. Especially, long distances and public places.
2. Held open by someone with "The Power." Each use of Saidin/Saidar drains the person.
3. Maybe more, but I don't remember....

In my opinion, Option #2 would be more accurate.
An Ashaman, a foot unit, set to move 2 squares instead of 1. (Represents "Quick Travelling" where previous knowledge is not required as the Ashaman only travels to the farthest they can see.)
At some point this Ashaman would Travel home and open a gate for the army to go through. (We don't see this part in the game. Assume it happens. The unit stays in one spot and is flagged as a teleport base. The unit will lose a health point for each unit teleported to it's location. Represents the drain from use with the power.) Then any unit flagged as a unit to teleport can "go through the gate" to the Ashaman. NOTE: It would be up to the player to use the same location to teleport multiple units from.

Option #1 would seem to be more suited for use as "The Ways" with a Waygate built in certain cities with some type of restriction like fresh water or a resource so it can't be built in every city

But I leave the decision to the makers of this mod. I'm only here to give my 2 cents worth on occasion, to play the mod when it's done, and test the mod when it's in beta....

Okay, I'm afraid I just officially gave up on animations x.x

I really don't have the patience or skill for them, but I can still piece together, render and compile units. As long as somebody else does the animations :P

If you can make a model to work in OpenFX, I can try to animate it. I'd have to get some help from more experienced people especially for humans and animals. But I'd be willing to give it a shot. I can do some animation if I've got a model to work with. I'm no good at creating the models or textures. I do have some more Borg units to do for the StarTrek mod, but it seems to be dead now. Of course, it might pick up if I do those... anywho back to the subject at hand....

I can't guarantee that I can do it. But I can try...

This is the correct program? I want to make sure since its  $200  and everyone else seems too cavalier about purchasing it for me to simply assume that, yes, it indeed is.

Thanks! I intend to spend much of my free time (or at least the portions not otherwise occupied...) learning how to use it when I get it. I would be more than happy to practice by making some simple stuff with it for you guys!

remember- students, be it high school, or collage, can potentially get student discounts on some software programs.

Aeon221,
That's it. That's the exact program that I use. If you're not sure about dropping 200, you could think about getting Poser4. I imagine it would be a little cheaper. Kinboat still uses Poser4, and I think everyone would agree his units are nothing short of spectacular. Up to you. :)

Oh, and Sasha, if you don't use the hacked editor with teleport but use the regular editor with "Re-base" ability, the unit doesn't suffer the loss of a hitpoint.
