Learning German

Today about "Guten Tag" and "Grüß Gott"

That's two common german greetings..
"Guten Tag" simply means "Have a good day"
"Grüß Gott" would mean "Greetings to the Lord"

The second Greeting (the religious one) isn't meant suicidical :D That's used in Bavaria and Austria, where the majority are Catholics.
Somebody told me it comes from long ago, to say that the greeter is included in the next prayer... Because you only greeted well known people whom you like - and they will bne included in the next prayer to wish them only the best... Ok, that much for the religious story...

Today it has the same meaning than "Guten Tag", and in Austria it's used in a 50% quote...
I Northern Germany "Guten Tag" is far more used... there more Protestants live...

BTW:I live in Austria, and I grew up with a "Grüß Gott". (I'm Protestant myself - the minority here) and once I tried only to say "Guten Tag" (I'm some kind of atheist).. But i noticed that most older people, and - most important - high ranking officers, or other people in hight public positions - prefer the "Grüß Gott"... So it's somethime a good idea to use this.. Then you don't look that much like a "modern teenanger without any traditions" to them... ;)

Over all it isn't important, becuase it had lost it's religois meaning...

HAHAHA- yes I know the feeling- used to work for Microsoft Europe, based in Munich and had to pick up the phone with my lil phrase ending in 'Guten Tag'... needless to say that when the person on the other end was from Southern Germany, Austria or Switzerland I would then add another 'Grüß Gott'- the results were amazing: Suddenly the callers would be much more friendly merely because they realised they were not dealing with somebody on the other end of the known universe, but speaking to a fellow 'Southerner' (Mer san hoit Süadstaatla)

Thanks for the culture lession guys. I never realized that Germany had its own version of North/South friction. In the American South it is very common for people to use ya'll as a form of address for a group of people. Northerners don't us this term. Frankly, I don't know how yankees get along without this little gem of a word.

Polaris...

In the German-speaking area there are more different slangs that you can count!

No really! There are specialists who can tell you not only in which county you live, no they can tell you exactly in wich town, valley or city you are living, only by listening to your slang!

We all can read and understand "Hochdeutsch" (that'S the name for the written German - the kind of German you would learn at school)

But in fact nobody speaks exaclty this written German!

It is true that there is a smooth Norht to South change in the sound of German, but the differencies are fare more...

Where I live we shorten the words much.
e.g. "gehen" would be "gehn", "stehen" would be "stehn"

"Ich mache das sehr gerne" would be
"I mach das seer gern"
Where I live we don't have a worse slang, but 10 miles out of town they would say
"I mouch deis fui gean"
Even if you don't understand the sentence, you will notice how much the letters are changing.
As I said - Normaly Slang isn't written down. If somebody writes something he will normaly use "Hochdeutsch"

I have decided to reveal my [party] surprise unit to get additonal help from our team :)
I have asked Smoking Mirror to assist me in creating
Kradschützen - Motorcycle soldier :D (suggested to me by joespaniel)
Since he is an expert in making motorized units, he will create the motorcycle, I will make the soldier :yeah:
I know he is taking a break, but he did mention he will be looking for some images and that this project is "easy" for him :)
I need also your help to post here pictures to gather better and more ideas!
If this works out between me and SM, we will have an AWSOME unit :mwaha:

...now I was gona ask also Kinboat...but he is taking a long break too
But he notices this post and would like to help.
A big THANK YOU! from our team! :yeah:
Smoking Mirror + Kinboat + nonnob3 , just imagine WOW a dream team and unit (...ok I am dreaming too much :p )

Nonnob3,

Are you planning on modeling the motorcycle and dispatch rider only, or were you going to do the motorcycle-sidecar + MG34 combo? I know it would mean more work for you guys, but the motorcycle-sidecar combo is sooooooo much cooler that just the motorcycle. One final question, BMW or Zundapp? Not that it really matters at Civ scale. Thanks for the surprise.

pi8ch,

Thank you for the interesting post. When I said North/South friction, I was refering less to the differences in slang, (although that is present here in the U.S.A. as well), but rather the differences in character of the two regions. American Southerners like to think of ourselves as wholly different from our Nothern bretheren. While there are some differences, we are far more alike these days due to the spread of mass culture. The various regions of the United States are losing their unique "flavor" because of this. I am afraid before long, one will be hard pressed to find any meaningful difference between a Northerner and Southerner.

Smoking mirror did mention to me that he will try to make the side car. But if it takes too much space , it will be just the moto. :)
I am hoping that after his "break" he will give me/us a hand. :yeah:
Meanwhile, it would be nice to have some photos posted here :)

A question... Why isn't Smoking Mirror in the team?

Kradschützen - Motorcycle soldier - Hoooray!!!!
!! I vote for the motorcycle-sidecar combo ... :goodjob: !!

Polaris...

About the cultural mix-up....

I know what you mean, but that's the only way to a world-wide community....
I hope someday we will identify us as "Earthlings" and not in Nations...
I just hope that local cultural things will remain...

But languages will reduce into a world language - that's for sure!
e.g. In German we are using more and more English words in daily language.. In a few generations, there is maybe no much difference between German and English anymore....
Other's like the French who try to bann any English words will have to assimilate sooner or later...

That's remind's me of my Hauptmann when I was in the Army.. It was the first day as a soldier, and the Hauptmann told us how to behave as an soldier....
On thing he said was this: (free translatet)
"I don't want to here any English words! Our culture is German, and our language is German!"
I was near to stand up to say "But I feel as as Austrian, not as as German", but I wasn't brave enough to do so ;) (was wise by me)

(I also posted a thread about this)

I just want to let you all know that I am going to "hold off" for just a bit on creating units.
Instead I am going to adjust all my other units fixing all the graphical and movement animations. :) (It's about time I "roll up my sleeves" :) )
I know that everbody likes them how they look now with out that many compliants (Thank you! :D) but I want them to be not at 95%, 97%, 98%.......but at 100%,... 110% :D
This is going to the unit upgrade project:
1. Grenadier (I have just started on it and posted a preview on the Granatwerfer thread)
2. Waffen SS
3. Flammenwerfer
4. Fallschrimjäger
5. Wehrmacht (This unit will no longer be called Fusilier)

It might take me a couple of weeks to complete this operation.

I hope by taking this task I will improve even more the "FUN" in playing Civ III for all Civ players in the world!

Thanks all to all for your great support!!!! :yeah:

pi8ch, you bring up some interesting points. It does sometimes seem that the world, (at least the industrialized nations of the West), are heading for some form of mass culture. I for one would rather see us remain Americans, Austrians, Germans, English, Scott, ect., rather that a homogeneous "Western" culture. While I would dearly love for the nations of the Western world to be closely tied to one another, I don't think we have to lose a lot of our individual national characteristics, (if there are such qualities), to do so.

As for English becoming the dominate laguage of the planet, I'm sure that the French in the 18th century were convinced that their language was poised to hold that honor. It was, after all, the laguage used in diplomacy and among aristocrates of all European nations, but it just didn't happen. I wouldn't be too surprised if English doesn't make it either. Besides, It kind of takes away any mystic that native english speakers might have had when everybody else can speak and understand our language. :D

:goodjob: It's cool that you wan't to "upgrade" your units! That is a sign of true artsmanship!
Verry, verry good! :D

I don't think we have to lose a lot of our individual national characteristics,
I hope so! I would like to see local tradition to survive, and I'm very sure much traditions will remain, but if some got lost, I fear that's the price...

I don't think that everything will be the same... Would be foolish to think so... Only the differences will become less... At least I hope so..

:D I only say: English is not mystic anymore...

Of the young European Generations nearly everyone can speak English... I think the highest English-speaking-percentage have the Scandinavians and Netherlands, then The German-speaking, and then the "Latin" states...

In nearly every Tourism state you will find not less English - Spekaer, in all Western and NATO states English is learned anyway...

Th Eastern European have not a low English Speaking percentage, in Russia, China and India are not less.. Very many Japaneese can speak English perfectly....

The "biggest" native-language is Mandarin-Chineese today I think, but the Language which is understand by most people is defenitely English...
Every International negotiation (like this Forum here at CFC) is hold in English...

That's why I would like to see English as European Nation Main Language - even if English is not native-superior in Europe.

BTW: That's a very intersting conversation! :goodjob:

Hmmm, some of them probably, but these will assimilate according to people with similar needs using the same commodities- and if these are obtainable via the current trade network, where engluish (american) is the language of choice. America with its huge economic overweight (languagewise) and its media monopoly on advertising, filmmaking etc, has the possibility of influencing our lifestyles because we feel 'confortable' living with the commodities that America facilitates (not necessarily products- what about the 'Pax Americana' we have been living in and brought up in for the last 58 years???). All in all this does not mean that traditions will be replaced by our complacent livestyle changes- Oktoberfest forever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can U specify the barriers you wish to see dissappear, Pi8ch ???

Good observation, Mandarin IS comming- Spanish is already here, mainly due its growing economical importance when trading with the developing Latin American markets. But mandarin is HUGE- I know so many Chinese up in the English Midlands are studying here (and got lotsa $$$ for some reason- don't be fooled when they tell U that communism has to look like Cuba). Some of them are from Hong Kong (dont consider themselves as "Chinese" Nationals but merely Citizens), Taiwan Singapoore, Korea, etc... they ALL either speak Mandarin or say they will learn it soon (in the case of those that weren't brought up in mainland China).

That was the "bad" part- the good part is that they all use English fore easy communication bcoz they don't understand the Chinese dialects :)- not because its "trendy" for them or bcoz they are our "Pimps" for the last 60 years as with English... but as U said: English has lost its mysticism- at least for Europeans- and it won't have a revival in Eastern Asia or the Arab world... this is certain as people are litterally fed up with English/American ways.

But what is to replace it? Chinese is not only one dialect or language- and to hard for Westerners to learn- not important for trade... Spanish while growing importance in trade, travel, etc it doesn't have the format of English but will rather replace the use of French in European fields! So, something will come to replace english- not in trade, but as a society thing...

I would think that it is quite likely that some kind of poyglot from of english will emerge and become something akin to a "world language." As the laguage is used by more and more people, each culture group will add their own elements to it. At some point, the language may be idetifiable as having been based on english, but will be wholly removed from the form in use today.
