Theoretical Governments

Eco: mod, Pol: high: Democracy. The state retains control of some aspects of the market but political power rests with the people. Example: most Western democracies today

but most are not Democracy's are they?
OK, so they are all 1 person 1 vote
But not everyones vote count the same do they?

I think the person before gave a better explaination. with the
Capitolist Republic - "Cash rules everything around me, cream get the money, dollar, dollar bill y`all". The wealthy few dominate politics with their money. Cumulative wealth is the measure of power.

If there is a true democracy around could someone please tell me

Thanks

As far as I can tell, in the real world: Republic means "without monarch".

A Monarch is not necessarilly an absolute ruler.
A Republic can be led by an absolute ruler - sometimes even an inherited position!

UK is democaracy. US is a democracy. Former-Iraq was a dicatorate. Yet... both the USA and Former-Iraq were Republics, and UK has a monarchy.

Thus in conclusion, comparing Monarchy to Republic has no meaning and in the interest of clarity, both titles should be dropped in favour of something more accurately describing the government.

Well, Iraq was a democracy. the Bath party was elected, and then when they got in they changed the system.

US may have a democratic system, but it's still not 1 person 1 vote in electing it's govenments.

I suppose the only true democracy would be to have a referendum on every issue... which is totally impractical unless people can vote online :p

However, I wouldn't trust the public to make sound decisions!

If you use a hybrid of democracy/eliteism, where a democratic selected few, representing parties rule the state. There would have to be much more frequent elections, every month preferable, where the representatives simply increase or decrease party-wise according to popular vote. There also is a fixed set of parties, always at least 13, and no party can get over 49% votes, and no party under 6%. All parties must represent one or more "minorities" in the population, one communist, one demo-socialist, one green, one labour party, one religious party, one liberal party, one conservative party, and a facist-like party (and so on)
There can't be no more than one party for every "slot", and all parties must be represented.
I have to work more on this one.. It seems interesting!

As for Civ3, this might be hard to implent... :)

edit: some really bad typos

Politics itself has four corners.

....................Libertarian...........................
..........................|..................................
..........................|..................................
..........................|..................................
Liberal---------Centrist---------Conservative
..........................|..................................
..........................|..................................
..........................|..................................
...................Authoritarian.........................

Definitions (As used here):

Liberals prefer self-government in personal matters and central decision-making on economics. They want government to serve the disadvantaged in the name of fairness. Leftists tolerate social diversity, but work for economic equality.

Conservatives prefer self-government on economic issues, but want official standards in personal matters. They want the government to defend the community from threats to its moral fiber.

Libertarians are self-governors in both personal and economic matters. They believe government's only purpose is to protect people from coercion and violence. They value individual responsibility, and tolerate economic and social diversity.

Authoritarians want government to advance society and individuals through expert central planning. They often doubt whether self-government is practical. Left-authoritarians are also called socialists, while fascists are right-authoritarians.

Centrists favor selective government intervention and emphasize practical solutions to current problems. They tend to keep an open mind on new issues. Many centrists feel that government serves as a check on excessive liberty.

I didn`t want to get too far off topic, here, but I thought maybe this could help you in deciding what kind of governments you want for your mod.

It's so complicated! :p

I took the short political quiz, but I found that some questions covered multiple issues forcing answers to be vague guestimates which means the analysis may be flawed :(

I never thought of myself as a leftist/centralist. I have very strong views on how government should be organised, but also believe each generation should be able to govern itself with absolute freedom (i.e. burn entrenched constitutions) :p

Guys,

If you want to discuss politics, take the discussion to the Off-Topic forum. This forum is for the Civ3 game.

This started as a search for "possible" and not "historical" governments to use in a Civ3 modification.

I'm in the World History forum to find historical facts on actual governments and why how those real governments differ from the theoretical target.

I'm also in the Off Topic forum to find political views or isolate the specific differences between political views.

But, I figured this is the place to discuss how theoretical governments should be represented in Civ3 :)

I posted what I did to provide a better understanding of political corners in which to create theoretical goverments from. I wasn`t making a discussion on the subject.

John-LP's post is fine; looking at the "big picture" definitions needed for this kind of discussion.

Correct. But what does your score on a political compass test have to do with it?
