On Sim City 4, if I play the game on Christmas, the city gets snow. Other games have similar easter-eggs triggered by certain dates on the system clock.

So if we play (an expansion of) Civ V, we ought to let the following things happen:

GREAT PEOPLE to appear on these real-world days, whether on holidays or celebrities' birthdays: (DISCLAIMER: Some are mythical; some are real)

January 1: Father Time

January 8: Elvis Presley

February 12: Abraham Lincoln

February 14: St. Valentine

February 22: George Washington

March 15: Julius Caesar

March 17: St. Patrick

April 1: (If player is queen) Justin Bieber; (If player is king) Miley Cyrus
(You have a sillier April Fool idea?)

April 15: Uncle Sam (if American civ is on map) Kim Il-sung (If Korean civ is on map)

Easter: Ishtar / (maybe an easter bunny?) / Mary Magdalene / (any significant figure on Jesus's resurrection)

May 5: (A great Spanish / Mexican Ruler)

Memorial Day: (A great US military leader)

Flag Day: Betsy Ross (the original US flag embroiderer)

Bastille Day: Mr. Bastille, Maximillian Robespierre, Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette

July 4: Any of the signers of the Declaration of Independence

August 1: Augustus Caesar

August 29: Michael Jackson

September 11: George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, (AS BARBARIAN LEADERS: Osama bin Laden, Mullah Omar, Saddam Hussein, other Taliban or Al Qaeda leaders)

October 31: Bram Stoker / J.K. Rowling / Edgar Allen Poe / Frankenstein's Monster / Count Dracula / Casper the Friendly Ghost / Any other haunted figure, real or imagined.

November 5: Guy Fawkes

November 11: (A significant US veteran)

Thanksgiving: (Any significant Pilgrim or Indian who dealt with Pilgrims)

December 21: (until 2012) (A Mayan ruler or scholar)

December 25: Father Christmas / Jesus Christ

(Any foreign holidays I'm not aware of should apply with any appropriate figure for those days.)

I haven't seen any holiday easter eggs on any game since Sim City 4. I think it would be a perk for any game.

I guess it would add some nice flavour.

But I'm sure a lot of people would be upset if this was what they saw development resources being spent on, however easy it may be to implement.

Better yet, on every significant historical years we get continual interruptions via popups that describes real events;

-- 0AD, Jesus Christ crucified by Romans in Jerusalem.
-- 1945AD, Japan Emperor capitulates on the AirCraft carrier to general mcArthur, Hitler bunker blows up
-- 1325BC, Tutankhamon burried in his pyramidal tomb
-- 1990AD, Hubble telescope deployed in orbit
-- 1905AD, Einstein publishes Theory of Relativity
-- 1431AD, Joan of Arc executed
-- 1824AD, Beethoven completes the 9th symphony
-- 1804AD, Napoleon crowned as Emperor of France

Plenty more chronological hurdles of the human struggles & achievements within time.

there should definitely be some more foreign holidays. i would also probably limit it to either 1 or 2 easter eggs representing each civilization in the game and then a few of the other ones that aren't represented.
and just for even more game flavor, assuming they bring back random events, maybe some of those could be easter eggs. like say on june 14th, there's a chance that one of the civilizations fighting a war could get a bonus to happiness, with the betsy ross explanation. maybe a 25% chance that it happens at all and then an equal chance for each civilization at war to get the bonus. stuff like that, in addition to the great people.

I think it would be in the best interests of the Devs to not include anything religious or 9/11 related--too touchy of subjects.

they already include some pretty religious leaders, like isabella, gandhi and askia, so a little bit more religion probably wouldn't hurt too much.
with 9/11, the most i would do is have a world trade center wonder, so that wouldn't really be an easter egg. pearl harbor might not be that big of a deal, though.

They have religious leaders, and in 4 religions, but they don't have anything really religious. Like "Jesus Christ, son of God, has said that..." or "The Prophet Mohammed, blessings of peace be upon him, has revealed that..."

Then things may get messy. I personally would not care, but it seems that a lot of people could. IDK though, I could be dead wrong.

oh, yeah, that. i wasn't even thinking about it that way. maybe there can just be a few small references to things here and there, like, "child born in one of your cities, people think he's the son of God, you get such and such bonus". and if the actual religious figures are named, they could probably just be represented by great people. that might be kind of hard without great prophets, though, so it could use some work.

There would be problems with altering the game for a day, though. It could greatly upset balance, and cause trouble in both competition games and games that people are wanting to play without sudden unexpected surprises. Different Great People names is fine, but I don't think having anything that would actually change something in the game, or effect balance, would be a good idea as an easter egg.

I like this.
A historical brush-up for those of us that have internet.
