This is racism, right?

I don't think you are wrong: I'm sure this is a prevalent belief. I also think it's a load of crap. One of the many reasons I'm glad not to have friends. (well, not many.)
Says the teacher :D

To be honest, this thread is an outrage.
Bozo has a job?

I don't know Bozo. It's racialism but maybe not racism. It all depends why they are doing it and whether the African guy is likely to be offended or pleased. I guess that depends on whether the statue is dignified or not.

Being offended or pleased about an act does not have an influence on whether it is racist or not.

"Asians are better at math than everyone else" is just as racist as "White people can't jump"

Oh no, thats so not me:nope: Id definitely leave all that to the aggrieved party.

We used to 'have lunch' together almost every day for awhile, a couple of years ago when we worked together, and I was still smoking. Lunch consisted of standing outside and chainsmoking, exchanging gripes and looking at womens butts. Thats when he would tell me about how he feels discriminated against.

So it's not ok to make light of the fact that the guy is black, but it's ok for you two to treat the women in your workplace as sex objects? I just want to be clear on this.

Just a joke.

Don't get your 'knickers' in a twist.

It's OK to make fun of things people have control over. If you have tattoo of your ex-girlfriend's name, believe the moon is made of blue cheese or enjoy eating McDonald's for example then it is fair to joke and make fun of you as you choose to do these things to yourself.

It is not OK to make fun of things people have no control over. If you are black, are really honestly ******** (Down's syndrome for example) or were born without legs then it is not fair to joke and make fun as you didn't choose any of those things that are just the way they are.

Hope that helps. :)

If the guy has a problem with it, then I guess not. But I dont think Bozo specified.
People make fun of things I have no control over, such as my vision (which sucks) and Im fine with it.

If you can't see the difference (pun totally intended), then I'm not sure what to say. Its obvious to me, and I think most people get it. Some just don't want to get it, or get it and don't care.

You're right, if the guy is specifically O.K. with it then it's fair game.

It's good of you to be cool with jokes about your vision, but really that should be off limits as stated above because it's not your fault or doing.

I was X the bins(slang for glasses) or Penfold(Dangermouses sidekick and famous for wearing glasses) at one place I worked someone went so far as to make a model of glasses out of wire and place it where I'd find it: I found it hilarious and it was very well crafted set of specs, so well crafted I actually wore them for a while, I was genuinely impressed that someone had taken so much time to play a practical joke, but then this isn't demeaning it was light hearted ribbing, myopia is just an unfortunate consequence of reading too many books and playing too many computer games. Mocking someone for being black is not really in the same league. If that is indeed how it played out.

It sounds racist to me.

You can tell racist jokes amongst friends, because if they will be insulted, they can tell you.

But not in the workplace. Even if he is insulted, he knows he cannot stand up to them. If I were you, I would go talk to him about it, let him know it is in strict confidence, meaning you will tell no-one, and if he tells you it does bother him, continue to insist it be taken down, but don't let them know he told you it insults him.

Of course, employing this strategy means the hatred is taken out on you, for ruining their fun, and that can be dangerous.

You're right, if the guy is specifically O.K. with it then it's fair game.

How are you going to know? Really?

How about he sew some white sheets together in a cone, cut eyeholes in them, and then put it on the guy who brought in the statue's desk.

HA HA HA

I bet someone gets insulted, even if he says he doesn't mind.... because that would be taking it too far, wouldn't it?

Spoiler :
Of course Not, it's just a joke, lighten up, geez!

I understand this can be a delicate issue, but some people like to be the center of attention and actively promote their shortcomings and differences in order to get attention. Read the sigs of many of the members of this forum for examples.

I went to a small school and a friend of mine in school was Jewish (ethnic not religious, and nobody would have even know if he didn't mention it) and would actively bring up topics that involved a Jewish person acting stupid - both for attention and so he could have a pre-made excuse to use. When he did something dumb he could then shrug it off with "what did you bunch of rednecks expect, after all I'm Jewish" and "I'm Jewish, so what's your excuse for being such a dumb-a**?".

Of course this only encouraged retaliation and such sensitive statements as "You really do have nice skin tone. I bet your lampshade would be the envy of the high-command." and "Don't worry, when us rednecks rise up and take over the world we will make sure we save a place for you as a highly-favored slave.

Oddly enough it helped him fit into a community in which he didn't really blend very well (because he was educated and cultured, not because he was Jewish).

One way to downplay your differences is to be the first to bring them up and thereby deprive the others of their topic they could have used against you.

I hope that made sense. :)

Suggest you find a little mannikan, add a straight edged moustache, black hair and a mad look to the eyes, and write the name of the perpetrator on it. A swastika armband is optional.

See how they like being stereotyped. Tossers.

 superb

Yes it made sense Sakhunder, also a good set of points.

People don't grow up, they restrain thenselves. If you think it, you've still thought it. It was a racist thing to do and unless you actuallu have a very cool atmosphere around the place, it was prolly better left undone. My work place its ok. I geuss no one watches any family guy or south park here?

I disagree, some people just can't get with the childishness, they're the people who grow up. I'm immature in many ways, unwise and laughably stupid at times, but in childish ways that are positive, open, unknowledgable and willing to learn.

We have a few threads about Southpark and Familly guy so fush them out.:)

I did, and I do not find it funny, (never thought family guy was).

A workplace may feel relaxed to many people, but to others it is a difficult social environment. Most people know that the person they are at work hardly resembles the person you are at home.

Yea, this really depends on how well you know each other. I still feel if one takes offense at a joke, then they are creating the negative atmosphere themselves. If one rolls with a joke then they are contributing to a positive atmosphere. Of course this varies. Family guy and south park go to where its not funny sometimes but I enjoy both of em.

You have to bear in mind though Tukas, that there is a line, and most sensible people now where that line is. If someone is black, making racially-oriented jokes is a really bad idea, as would be making a joke about the parentage of someone whose parents have died. Hell, even if they're white and show a huge disdain for being called things like "cracker" or "honky" then those terms shouldn't be used. Is a little decency from acquaintances in one's day-to-day life too much to ask?
