A 3-month-old girl was killed by ants while she was napping in a crib at a baby-sitter's home Monday afternoon, Phoenix police said.

The caregiver, who has not been identified, put the infant down for a nap about 1:30 p.m., police Detective Tony Morales said.

When she went to check on the little girl a half-hour later, she was covered in ants and was in "severe respiratory distress," he said.

Autumn White had "hundreds of ant bites" on her legs and her throat was swollen, Assistant Phoenix Fire Chief Bob Khan said. She was not breathing when firefighters arrived at the home near 83rd Avenue and Mohave Street.

Not saying anything except that a three month old baby died from ant bites. It was intended as a general interest piece. Not offering any opinion, not looking for heated political debate.

Perhaps this may have been part of the problem:

Just kidding!

I'm opposed to ants.

Ants can hurt like a B****

Once when I was about 9 years old I was playing Hide and seek in a field. I layed down so that I couldn't be seen over the wheat and turns out I layed on a fire ant hill. It didn't take to long before I started feeling stinging all over my body. There were tons of them all over me, my whole body was in pain the rest of the day.

From what I understood, ants are a real problem in Phoenix, Arizona. This is though, a very rare event. The chances of dying due to asphyxiation because of ants are less than getting hit by lightning more than once in the same year.
