We, and our allies, have agreed that the following treaty will be acceptable to us. The Norse Empire has acted with unwarranted aggression and suppressed many people in Europe. That will not stand. The Norse Empire must return to their core lands in Britain and Denmark. Should you refuse the treaty the war will continue and you will lose more.

Treaty of Paris

Art. 1

Peace will be signed between the Norse Empire and the Kingdom of Aquitaine. For aggressions against the nation of Aquitaine, The Norse Empire must cede to Aquitaine the provinces of Centre, Bourgogne, Pays-de-la-Loire, Basse-Normandie, Haute-Normandie, Ile-de-France, Picardie, Nordpas-de-Calais and Champagne-Ardenne.

Art. 2

Peace will be signed between the Norse Empire and the Kingdom of Greater Lothringen. For their blatant and treacherous aggression against Lothringen, The Norse Empire must cede to Greater Lothringen the provinces of Luxembourg, Wallonia, Zealand, North Brabrand and the parts of Limburg west of the Rhine as well as the city of Rotterdam.

Art. 3

Peace will be signed between the Norse Empire and the Kingdom of Bavaria. The Norse Empire must cede to Bavaria the remaining provinces in the Low Countries as well as Lower Saxony, Bremen and Hamburg.

Art. 4

Peace will be signed between the Norse Empire and the Kingdom of Sweden. For their treachery and aggression against Sweden, The Norse Empire must cede to Sweden the region of Norway as well as make a payment of 2 million gold marks.

Art. 5

All the countries named will sign treaties of non-aggression as well as a defensive pact in order to ensure future stability of the region.

Your proposal is unacceptable. You seem to have misunderstood the situation. The Empire is not a defeated foe, with no choice but to accept your diktat. Peace negotiations were intended to save us all a great deal of blood and money, not humiliate one party.

With regards to your treaty: We will not give up territories that are populated by Norse and English. To do so would be to invite chaos in the future. And to your ludicrous charge that we have suppressed people, I ask why they have not rebelled against us? And Lothringen is the injured party. Why do they gain so little, while Bavaria, which has not been harmed by the Norse, gains so much?

You speak of the Empire's aggression? We have only invaded Lothringen, for which we are sorry. We did not attack Aquitaine, we did not attack Bavaria and we did not attack Sweden. And what of your attack on Aragon? What of Bavaria's ruthless suppression of German states? I do not see any punishment for that. Do not try to pretend that you are doing this out of the goodness of your heart. This treaty is nothing but a cynical attempt to dismember the Empire. Also, why, when Lothringen is the injured party, is the Empire negotiating with Aquitaine?

However, the Empire genuinely desires peace, so here is our counter-proposal:

1)We were not the aggressor against Aquitaine. We have conducted no campaigns against Aquitaine, but have only attempted to defend our lands. Nevertheless, we will agree to cede some French territories to Aquitaine, in order to restore the peace. We will agree to cede the territories currently under Aquitaine's control, and the areas that are rebelling, no more.

2)Lothringen is the injured party in this war, and to them we will cede Luxembourg and Ile-de-France.

3)We will agree to pay compensation for the war. We will pay 4 million gold marks to Lothringen, to help them rebuild the damage we have caused, and we will pay 2 million gold marks to Aquitaine, to cover your expenses. We will also formally apologize for the war.

4)Bavaria has betrayed us, and done nothing for your cause, and we will not cede any territory to her, least of all territories that have been part of the Empire for centuries. We will, however, recognize the Bavarian annexation of those former Swedish territories that are currently in rebellion, and pay 1 million marks to Bavaria, as a gesture of goodwill.

5) We did not betray Sweden. Sweden betrayed us. Sweden entered the war because it saw an opportunity to steal Imperial territory, not because it was concerned by the sovereignty of Lothringen. The war with Sweden is no concern of yours, and we will continue it until a seperate peace is reached with Sweden.

6)We agree to the non-aggression pacts, and the defensive pact.

TNES.png
We hope that you will agree to our proposal, so that we can put this messy business behind us, and move forward in peace.

OOC: You didn't really think that I would accept that, did you? It makes Versailles look like a good deal. And I wasn't the aggressor against Sweden. I gave specific orders to only invade after Sweden invaded me. If they had left me alone, there would have been no war.

The Norse Empire requests that you kindly keep your drunken, heretical faces out of our affairs, as you believe that European events do not concern you and you refuse to honour our alliance.

It does concern us, but we dont' want to fight in your war that we didn't agree with in the first place. You are walking on thin ice. We demand an apology or the Alliance will be over.

We apologize. Our ambassador was not in his right mind. His sons died in the war, and his wife commited suicide. I am sure that you can understand why he might be emotional. He has been sent to the Hebrides, to clear his mind.

Hakon, Earl of Ribe, and commander of the Army of Norway, sat in his tent, and reflected on the events that had brought him here. He had entered the army as a young man and distinguished himself against rebels. When the War for Leopold's Throne began, he had been a mid ranking officer, but thereafter his rise had been meteoric. He had executed several of the Norse victories in the campaign, and distinguished himself enough to be given command of the crucial delaying force during the Battle of the Bridges. His brilliant command of that force had allowed the Norse victory and elevated Hakon's reputation to great heights. And then, he had been called to the king, to receive a new command.

King Canute himself presented Hakon with the command. “You have shown brilliance in the campaign against Lothringen. We believe that you are our best general. Therefore, you will be in command of our primary army, in the coming campaigns. Do not prove us wrong in our estimation of you ” Hakon stood up straight and said “I am honoured to be given this command. I will not disappoint you. I will lead your armies to the best of my ability, and I will defeat Aquitaine.” The king shook his head “You will not be campaigning in Aquitaine.” Hakon was puzzled “Not Aquitaine? Lothringen is nearly defeated. Surely we do not need to commit our largest army to fight them.” Once again, the king shook his head “Not Lothringen either. You are going to Norway.” “Norway? But then” “Yes. You will lead the invasion of Sweden.”

He still remembered the surprise he had felt, when he heard that he was to fight Sweden. It hadn't seemed logical, when Aquitaine was invading France, to start a new war with Sweden. But then he had been shown the spy reports, that showed that Sweden was conspiring with the Empire's enemies. After that, he concluded, as had the king and his advisers, that there was no choice but to prepare to fight Sweden. So he went to Norway, and took command of the Army of Norway, which was by far the largest army he had ever commanded. And he had prepared relentlessly, drilled his army and waited for the Swedish invasion. And then the invasion finally happened.

Late at night, Hakon was sitting in his headquarters, in a little town not far from the Swedish border. The feverish preparations with which he had been engaged for the last five weeks were complete. Everything was in place, and he only awaited word that the war had begun. There was nothing to do but wait, and so he was relaxing with a cup of beer. He was interrupted by the sound of a horse galloping up to the building. He rose, and went to the window. Outside, a messenger had dismounted and was knocking on the door. Hakon's aide hurried to open the door, and Hakon followed. The messenger entered “Urgent message for General Hakon” “I am Hakon. What is the message.” “I do not know sir. It was for you only, sir.” and handed the message over. Hakon opened it and read. When he finished, he announced “It's started. The Swedes have landed a force at Bergen, and Swedish troops have crossed the border. Neville is moving to surround Bergen. Wake the officers. We march at dawn.”

He smiled to remember the first battles of the war. It was almost comical, the surprise of the Swedes. They had expected to find the Norse away in France, and instead found themselves outnumbered 3 to 1. In shock, many of their troops surrendered, as soon as they realized how their tables had been turned. The rest were annihilated by the superior training and numbers of Hakon's troops. And then he was in Sweden proper, and advanced towards Uppsala, while Neville pushed towards Goteborg. All the Swedes could throw against his army was levies and irregulars, which were no match for the Norse. In the absence of real resistance, he rapidly advanced across Sweden.

Hakon was riding his horse in the midst of his staff, as his army advanced across central Sweden. He had never expected it to be this easy, he reflected. After the defeat of their invasions, the Swedes had barely mustered any resistance. Only untrained peasants and boys had opposed the army, and the Norse veterans had crushed them. Now at last, scouts had reported a real army was moving against them, comprised of most of the regulars in country. Hakon's force was moving to meet them. While Hakon was engaged in this reflection, an aide rode up to make a report “Sir, the scouts report that the Swedish army is ten miles ahead” Hakon was slightly taken aback “They should not be that close yet. Ah well, they aren't close enough to change things.” He addressed his staff “Prepare the men.” To the aide, he said “You are dismissed.” But the aide did not leave yet “That is not all, sir. The scouts also report that King Gustav Vasa himself is leading this army.” Hakon slowly smiled at this information “Really? So Vasa has come out to watch his men die. Good. Perhaps we can take him and end this war right now.”

That had been a good day. The Swedish army had been outflanked and utterly crushed by his Norse veterans. But-his mouth twisted slightly-Vasa himself had escaped. After watching his army die, he had fled, barely ahead of his pursuers, and the war continued. But with the defeat of that army, there were no more troops to throw against the Norse. He had taken Uppsala soon after, and then the word arrived that Neville had taken Skane, and all that remained in Sweden was Stockholm itself. But then, he was racing the calendar. When winter arrived, he would have to stop the campaign. And winter did arrive, and he was forced to stop, almost within sight of Stockholm. He grimaced at the thought. Now the Swedes would have time to regroup. At least they were almost finished, and after their fall, the other enemies of the Empire would soon follow.
He stood and left the tent. Outside, it was snowing heavily. A group of his commanders were nearby, discussing the Swedish weather. He went over too them and greeted them. They began to discuss their strategy for the coming campaign, but before more than two minutes had passed, Hakon looked up, and saw a messenger riding towards them. He was dressed in a heavy black coat, and against the whiteness of the surroundings, seemed like an ominous portent. Hakon tried to shake off his feeling of impending doom and approached the messenger “What is it?” “Urgent message from Goteborg.” He handed the message over. Hakon took it and and began to read. As his staff watched, his face grew black. When he reached the end, he tore up the letter, drew his sword and flung it against a nearby stump, where it stuck, quivering. “Damn!”, he roared. His second in command said hesitantly, “What is it?” Without looking at him, Hakon muttered darkly “Things just became much more complicated. I don't know if the Empire can survive this treachery.” His second looked alarmed. Hakon turned to him “Bavaria has declared war.”

We did not betray you. You went to war with the Catholic League and we had to choose between one or the other. We saw the Catholic League as in the best interests of our people. Yes, I'll do them. I am uncommonly busy right now, as I'm volunteering for an undefined candidate and party in the upcoming midterm elections, and doing several other things too.

I just have a couple questions. Is there a named Monarch or can I do that. Also orders would be due when?

No, Poland is currently ruled by a confederacy of nobles...so yes, you could choose the monarch if you wish.

Orders are due one week from today, and the stats will be done over the weekend.

So you admit that you are nothing more than an opportunist. I hope that Austria, Aquitaine and Lothringen see this, and realize what a snake they have allied with. Bavaria is a country that cares for nothing but its own interests, and cannot be trusted. Maybe they will next decide to "liberate" the people of Austria, or Poland, or Lothringen or Switzerland.

We are not opportunists. We value our alliance with the Catholic League more so then our alliance with the Norse. The Catholic League is close to our faith and its interests match with ours. Anymore attempts to twist our words will be met with severed negiotations. We see how desperate you are in your attempts to turn allies against eachother by the twisting of words.

Says the country that has declared its intention to annex its "allies" lands. You have declared that you will take Swedish lands, and have tried to convince Lothringen to give up its lands. I fail to see how that is valuing your alliance. And again, you say that you only hold alliances if it suits your interests.

Lothringen is not part of the Catholic League and we do not see their occupation of German lands as the right thing for their people or ours. Lothringen is becoming torn between French and German and they must choose one or become wracked by stagnation and civil war. The Swedes are not our allies and the German people revolted at the first sign of freedom showing us they really not care to be ruled by the Swedish throne. We are not allies with Sweden or Lothringen just happen to have a common enemy at the moment.

Then we did not attack the Catholic League. We attacked Lothringen, which, as you say, is not part of the Catholic League. The Catholic League responded, so obviously the Catholic League is the aggressor in this dispute. And the people in our terrritories have not revolted, showing that they do not care to be ruled by a German throne.

Bavaria has declared that you are not allies. Therefore, we wish to conduct negotiations directly with you, rather than with an alliance of which you are not part. We propose this treaty with Lothringen.

1)Lothringen is the injured party in this war, and to them we will cede Luxembourg and Ile-de-France.

2)We will agree to pay compensation for the war. We will pay 4 million gold marks to Lothringen, to help them rebuild the damage we have caused

3) We will formally apologize for the war.

4) We will sign a defensive pact.
