That "dancing naked around the room" thing is true, though. I have the video and the transcript:
TV - Oct. 4, 2002 - Dancing Around the Room Naked or "Live On The Today Show" transcription of show
Early Friday morning, the 4th day of October, 2002 an spirited group of devoted fans gathered outdoors in the rain in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza to hear Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers jam live for ”The Today Show” on NBC.
As the television audience waited eagerly for the band to perform, they were teased about an hour and a half into the 3-hour show with an advertisement for the new album. Viewers watched as the screen showed a clip of Tom walking on the beach with the song "The Last DJ" playing in the background. A voice spoke, "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers -- THE LAST DJ, the new studio album -- in stores Tuesday, October 8th . . . You can't stop a man from dreamin'.
At last, about 15 minutes later, it was time for us to hear OUR GUYS live. Katie Couric introduced the band.
Katie Couric: . . . It is the 4th day of October, but it's the first day of "Rocktober" out on the Plaza. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will be turning it up right out there on the Plaza in just a few minutes . . . Okay you zany Rock 'n' Rollers, here's Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!
Looking handsome, happy and relaxed, Tom and the band rocked into the opening notes of the new album's title song, "The Last DJ."
Katie Couric: They're America's enduring Rock band . . . Twelve gold and platinum records and a recent induction into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Congratulations, guys! Their latest release arrives in stores on Tuesday the 8th. I'm talking about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Let's introduce them all. This of course is Tom Petty. Thank you. And the Heartbreakers are Mike Campbell on guitar, Benmont Tench on keyboards, aka Ben, Ron Blair on bass, Scott Thurston on guitar and vocals, and Steve Ferrone, not Ferone, but Ferrone on drums.
Tom Petty: You said Scott Thurston.
KC: Oh, I'm sorry, I got you guys mixed up. Well, nice to see you, Scott, Ron.
Ron Blair: I'm Ron.
KC: Okay, nice to have you! Thank you guys so much for doing this. I can't imagine getting up early is something you do on a regular basis for some reason.
TP: Well, we haven't been to bed yet.
KC: You haven't?
TP: No.
KC: Party on dude!
TP: But we're havin' a lot of fun. And thanks for havin' us and playing our records. Um, you know, we often turn on the Today Show and dance naked around the room. (much laughter by the Heartbreakers)
KC: Gee, thanks, Tom. I don't know what quite to say.
TP: No, it's really good to dance naked to and to sell a new record.
KC: Then we have something in common, don't we?
TP: So you combine the two and you've got it goin' on.
KC: Tell me about "The Last DJ." I know that it's gotten a lot of attention. "Billboard" says that it's one of the most important songs written by a man who's seen just about everybody. And I know it also takes some sort of shots at the music industry and what you think is wrong with America.
TP: Well, in a humorous way, I hope. It's just about, you know, living in corporate America and kind of different vanishing little freedoms that we have. It's kind of a little story. You need to hear the whole thing to really understand it.
KC: So most of the songs are like that. I mean, it's message music, if you will.
TP: Well, it's a little story. You know, it's just about our collective soul. But still it's a lot of fun to dance around the room naked to.
KC: We're always getting back to that.
TP: Yeah.
KC: Well, I'm not going to be able to dance around the Plaza naked, sadly, Tom, but what are you going to be playing for us anyway?
TP: Well right now the producer has asked us to go back into our past. We're goin' back to 1978. We're gonna play a song from our second album called "I Need To Know" too.
KC: Okay, all right. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!
(Band plays "I Need To Know")
KC: Here's Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with "Have Love Will Travel" from their new CD, THE LAST DJ.
(Band plays "Have Love Will Travel")
All in all -- an awesome performance! Thanks, guys! Can't wait for your next show!
