Is there any way to prevent this, or is it just a way to make sure that you have to keep on getting more "happy faces"? Does increasing your borders lessen the "crowdedness"?
This really shouldn't be in Strategy Articles. No, there's no way to remove the crowded unhappiness. The amount of unhappiness due to crowding is equal to the amount of population you have.
You can of course negate these effects through religion, buildings and luxurious resources.
This is put in place to stop cities building to insane levels. In addition to buiding buildings and providing resources you can increase your cultur budget (with drama) because the theatre and coloseum give an extra happy face per 10% you put into culture.
If you want to avoid unhappy crowding in one big city (say, your capital), you can build the Old Globe Theatre -- it permanently avoids any unhappy faces in the city where it is built. Overcrowding may still be a health issue, but you won't have any unhappy faces in that city.
The only way to reduce the number of "It's too crowded!" faces is to make the city smaller. That means breaking out the with Slavery, drafting with Nationhood, or simply starving the whiners to death
