Empire isn't out for ages, so rule that out. Medieval II is the best option in my opinion, but it depends on your preference of course.

What is your computer like? M2 needs a decent computer, while RTW should work on any half-decent computer out. Buy Rome: Total War with the Barbaian Invasion expansion together I'd say, it's a good game, has good and longer developed mods for it and will only become harder to find in the future.

If you decide to get Medieval II, you must NEVER get Medieval I. Otherwise, you will never play M2TW again. Ever. Unless you're an eye-candy sucker. In that case, you probably like BTS over Conquests because it's pretty. In that case I don't care anyway. In that case, why am I answering this post? In that case, why am I typing this sentence? In that case

Okay, I voted for Rome: Total War because IGN and Gamespot think it's the best game in the series.

@PriceScamp: My laptop is quite low on disk space. I even uninstalled Sid Meier's Pirates to make room. Then I figured out that I couldn't reinstall it.

Depending on your system requirements, I'd go for Rome TW for lower specs (even though it does require a moderately modern machine), or Medieval 2 for a high end machine.

Saying that though, I have yet to play MTW 2... I love RTW :D

My computer could probably just about handle MTW2 on the lowest settings, but I went for RTW anyway (which it handles nicely, although it gets slow if you try a fairly big battle after a few hours of play). Partly because it was cheaper, partly because it had a more novel setting (for me, anyway) and partly because I'd just seen 300.
And if you don't have Shogun, I'd recommend you pick up a budget range copy just for the hell of it. There's not many games that deal with that setting (in the west, at least), and it does a really nice job of it. Not as advanced as it's sequels, but it still manages to feel complete, if you know what I mean- it doesn't feel like a crude "well we wanted X but we'll settle for this" sort of thing, which you find with some older (and, to be honest, new) games.

Shogun and its expansion was good. MTW with its expansion then a good mod from their forums (like the XL mod) is glorious. Rome didn't improve, infact it felt like it went down in quality in some places, except the family tree stuff which I love, its expansion was a dissappointment. MTW2 was just a dissappointment... only a good mod like Stainless Steel can make it a half way decent game.

Well, day before yesterday while my parents went shopping for supplies (I'm on vacation) I found both Rome and Medieval II in the Video Games section. But I got the Battlechest edition of StarCraft instead.

Rome Total War is far better then Medieval II, but of course, if you are a player who prefers graphics to actual gameplay then buy MTWII, just in case i´d say you should buy both.

Now pay me for my support Creative Assembly and SEGA!! :D

I like both RTW and MTW2, but I think the Kingdoms expansion gives a lot to offer (4 campaigns!), so I would go with MTW2. Or RTW. They're both great. Hasdrubal's right.

Rome is a great game, and has some truely amazing mods that are even a match for some of the mods here. I guess it also depends if your interested in a particular part of history or not.

All that said, Empire looks like its going to blow all the other games a mile away. Sea battles, world map, different government, technologies, founding colonies, ect... etc....

Also looks like it will need a beast of a computer only Bill Gates can afford. :( Any word on system specs yet?

Anything but Medieval Total War - it's the buggiest piece of rubbish I've ever come across (this isn't just me - just do a search for "crash to desktop" with medieval total war, for example).

And it's not just the machine, I've tested this on 4 different computers, with different makes of motherboards, chipsets, operating systems and five different graphics cards (from ATI, Intel, NVIDIA, VIA and ancient Voodoo Banshee). There are a wide variety of bugs, often leaving the game unuseable - including crashing to desktop, getting stuck in an endless loop in the menu system, not being able to pass a certain year, not being able to select units, and graphics corruption. Some people report success on a particular Intel chipset if you stick with old drivers, but often there's no fix.

I haven't tried any of the others - but I'm not sure I want to waste my money again.
