Trading resources

Hi all,

another question that popped into my head just now:

When I trade resources like Cow (1 of 2). What does this mean? If I trade something of which I just have one, would I be out of that resource for own use? Or is the 1/1 or 1/2 tradable?

Thanx!!

If you have only 1 of a resource - say cow - you lose the bonus that resource provides. In this case, that would be extra health. If it was say 1 gold or 1 gem, you would lose that extra happiness - a forge would provide an extra happy too. So generally you would not trade a resource if you have only 1 of them. I have done that though for diplo reasons or to grab a good chunk of gold per turn, if my empire is set up in such a way that I can do without that resources bonus.

If you trade something you have only 1 of, you'll be out of that resource. So, the last one should always be for your own use while the rest you can trade away.

In a case of OCC you can also trade away your last resources given that you have the Globe Theater and the National Park, which eliminate the need for happiness and health.

Furthermore, it can sometimes be reasonable to trade away your only cow or whatever if you get something good in return for it. For example, a cow is just 1 :health: for a long time but if you manage to trade it for Wheat, you get 2 :health: instead, assuming you have granaries everywhere. Also, in situations where you're well over the health cap but need to get happy resources, it's reasonable to trade health for happiness.

Thanx guys!! It's so nice to have answers this quickly. But how do you know all these things? The manual isn't really that clear. And there is much more to this game.... I love it, but don't get everything...

Honestly, I've never read the manual. I've read articles on this site and various forum posts. Things like this though that are pretty basic, I just learned from experienced.

HAha, my questions really are pretty basic. But glad to have the oppertunity to post them here. Some questions are just to be sure. thanks all!

I have a follow up question on this...

Things like horses, copper and iron show a +1 hammer, while others (like incense and fur) show +1 commerce (along with the happy). Is this a bonus that is applied to all cities or what? Also, I've noticed when I trade away a resource, the city that is working that tile loses some production/beakers, i.e. I have one source of horses in my capital BFC. I trade the horses away and my production in that city goes down, even though the tile still shows the correct amount of FHC. What's the deal?

It's about the tile yield, and doesn't go around the empire along with the resource. And you don't lose the hammer bonus of horses when you trade them away as... you guessed it, the bonuses come from the improvement of the tile and the tile itself, which are independent of the existence of the resource per say.

I see the word 'beakers' many times. Since I am Dutch, it's hard for me to find the proper translation. What is meant by 'Beaker' in Civilization? Thanx

I am sorry but I do not understand your answer.

The question is: "What gives additional bonus which is visible during diplomacy screen when you trading your resources". Sometimes this additional bonus is food sometime its a production (I do not have game in front of me right now).

So if, for example the bouns is one unit of food. How this affect my current civilization?

Thanks.

You don't lose the extra food, you just lose the bonus in terms of health or happyness. As it was previously stated, if you have 1 cow and trade that away, you will only lose the +1 health it provides to all your cities provided they are linked with a road or river. In the city that has the cow, you will not lose any additional food to that city a Pasture provides.

I understand that I lose health but I do not understand the extra food bonus which is visible in diplomacy under the "health cross" sign. I would like to know what exactly gives me this food bonus. Does it give + 1 for each city or what?

This part is confusing and not very clearly explained in the game interface. If I understand what you're talking about correctly ...

The bonus food is on the TILE that the resource is on. If you look at the tile yield (food, hammers, commerce) you will see that the tile gives more yield than a standard tile. For example, a sugar on a grassland tile will give more food than a regular grassland tile.

The dutch word for beaker would be "beker", so it's not that far off

Anyhow, this is a beaker: :science:

Aaaaahhhh, yes I found the word 'beker' ofcourse, didn't know it meant science. 'Cause in the Dutch sence, this isn't really a beaker, haha.
