This has happened a couple of times recently and wondered what people thought.

Most land is taken but there are gaps, everyone has open boarders and no-one is beyond maceman. Yesterday Frederick marched a large stack with elephants, that I don't have, into my territory on open boarders after I pissed him off refusing a tribute. I am the score leader but not power leader as is usuually the case at this point, I tech lead by a few though. He was headed for open land near one of my cities that would have been a real pain if he had attacked as my invasion stack was miles away waiting to hit america.

So canelled the open boarders hoping his troops would sod off back to whence they came to american soil between me and him but they ended up on a single coatal square not yet in my territory in the middle of my part of the continent.

Now in theory this is fine and I smiled and thought that would really annoy him. What I want to know is will this situation in real terms terms worsen an already strained relationship over time, not that I really care now but want to know for future games. Also what happens when my boarders expand to that square and there is no land except Fredies that is miles away, will they be wisked home, I would assume so. Can you predict where such a stack would end up. Will it always be the nearest empty (not in boarders) square ro can they go back to onother AI's Friendly territory.

If locking up a travelling stack doesn't cause poor relations does anyone use it as a strategy if it happens to come up?.

Prince continents unmodified or expanded civ4 eagerly awaiting BtS by the way.

If you don't reopen borders and your culture extends to that island, Freddy's units will teleport to the nearest land he can legally enter, whether it's Germany, unclaimed land, or an AI neighbor he has open borders with.

There is no direct penalty for cancelling open borders, except you lose the +1 for having OB in the first place. If you reopen borders (will take a few turns) you'll get the +1 back with no penalty. You never get a diplomatic penalty for cancelling trades, except when another AI demands that you do so.

Manipulating his troops like that causes no diplomatic penalty either. ;) In fact, if you reopen borders his units will sit on that island forever, costing him maintenance, since the AI is too stupid to send a few boats to pick them up. (It's possible that the BetterAI in BtS will fix this.)
