Trying to piece together a budget build PC

The HAF 912 is a pretty good case, I also picked up 4x120mm Coolermaster fans in matching black for $15

I've already got a case, came today infact. I got a Xigmatek case, along with 8GB of Corsair RAM. Also a cooler master fan and DVD drive... my build is under way. :D

Have fun. This thread actually gave me the bug to build a new small form factor system for myself, just put it together yesterday. Once you get the bug it's hard to shake it...

Here's the list of finalised parts: come Friday, I'll order the final processor and motherboard, then I'm all finished. :D

Just a tip: be careful when applying the CPU to the socket, and make all the connections to the motherboard to the case before testing that the CPU and motherboard worked ok.

I made a grevious error on a recent rebuild and ruined my LGA 775 socket (bent pins, including breaking a crucial one) of a very nice new motherboard, which is now suitable for framing and wall-mounting.

One time I tried to turn on my new mobo for POST test and all I got was whirring fans. Perplexed, I wondered what the heck was going on (RAM? CPU? defective Mobo?) when I discovered that there was an extra metal riser on the mobo tray touching the underbelly of the mobo and causing a short on the board. Removed it and viola, worked perfectly.

Moral of the story: don't immediately jump to blame faulty components, always check your mobo placement, and always check to ensure everything is seated properly and plugged in.

I still say you don't need an aftermarket cooler if you're not overclocking. But if so then yes, get one.

I'm getting someone with a bit more know-how and building experience to help me, so things like this shouldn't happen.
