Tusk1 - Ladies First

1315 AD (3)
I sign peace with the Byzantine getting a mere $17 and WM.

I switch non-corrupt cities to banks and universities. We need to improve our economy. With having Smith's we clearly gain from banks.
(IT) We get the expected boot from Byzantine. I couldn't get all our troops out of her lands in 1 turn.

1335 AD (7)
(IT) Spain completes Newton. I'm glad I went with my gut and not try.

1345 AD (8)
I now see Rifles in a Spanish city.
(IT) Research begins on rails. We really need that mobility for the next war.

I've got it.

Primary goal: build up infrastructure and try to catch up with the other nations.

Secondary goal: build up troops.

Just started to play and I noticed something.

Spain has Steam Power. Would it be better to set science and luxury to 0% and buy it from Spain? With everything set at 0% we will gain 217 GPT. Spain is furious with us however so it would require a bit of gold. At the current rate Steam power will be researched in 11 turns.

Team, what do you think?

Good question.

Even if we drop science and luxuries down to 0% and have the 217 gpt, can we buy it from her?

My initial reaction is not to buy it and use our cash to short rush infrastructure and units. More work on our part as Micro-Managers but that is part of our job desription.

But it all depends on the price.

Also, how long is left on our peace treaty with Spain? A gpt deal may make her less furious and less likely to beat us up.

My gut is not to buy it. Don't forget we get some GPT back from Spain in a few more turns. Those number of turns hopefully drop.

The last thing I want to do is fuel her research to get further ahead of us. Buy with GPT would do just that.

Assessment:

Things don't look as good as last time. We are behind in tech, behind in strength, and we need a much more stable economy.

Steam power is set to be researched in 11 turns, however Spain has that technology already. I decide to leave research as is and research this on our own rather than buying it.

2: 1360 AD

IBT

Spain renews the peace treaty as it has expired. Luckilly she didn't ask anything from us. I take the opprotunity to see if there are any trades available. For silks, spices, and incense she is willing to trade us Horses, world map, 3gpt, and 6 gold.

Since we have no supply of horses, this could help us build up our army. It's a poor trade but it at least gives Spain less of a reason to turn on us again.

It was only after I traded that I remembered horses are useless to us (at least for now) because Japanese Samurai replace knights. Blah.

4: 1370 AD

IBT: Spain is building Universal Sufferage

5: 1375 AD

Workers finish clearing the brush away underneath the settler near the Bayzantine empire. The city Trojan is created, in honor of the condoms we're using while we're running around with all these women.

6: 1380 AD

IBT: Greece wants Metallurgy and will give us The Republic. Yuck. I'm not too keen about giving Al cannons for a worthless technology we won't use. He'd alternatively trade his world map and 7gpt. Still not worth it.

9: 1395 AD

IBT: The Greeks are destroyed by the Byzantine empire. Probably why they wanted Metallurgy from us, lol

Steam power has been researched. We need to create a better army, so Military Tradition is set to be researched in 5 turns. My other choice would have been electricity to get to replaceable parts. Whoever takes it next can change research if they wish.

Summary

The Greeks were destroyed by the Byzantine empire. Our infrastructure is slowly building. Units produced were mostly cannons.

Overall it was an uneventful turnset. If it weren't for Greece being destroyed I would say nothing at all happened.

I didn't see any comments above about the status of coal. I hope we do have some with the size of our territory.

Roster:
Elephantium - UP!
Please make sure to the workers around our capitol are awake and laying rails if we have coal. We need a thin rail-net connecting cities a lot more then a few more shields in our core. The thin-net is the only way we will be able to deal with invasions.

I'm not sure what makes sense in regards to military.
We badly need better defenders as that is why I was getting chewed up in Byzantine territory.
We also need better production (factories) to produce enough to deal with Byzantine and Spain.

I didn't see any comments above about the status of coal. I hope we do have some with the size of our territory.

I hadn't expected to research Steam Power early so I forgot to look for coal. Looking back at the game I see we have 2 deposits of coal in our homeland. Not sure where it is.

The Ladies of our Life
We were too shy to talk to France and we got tired of trying to communicate non-verbally.
Egypt was our girlfriend, but now is just an unpleasant memory.
The love of our life, Russia is dead and our capital was razed in shame of this woeful bad choice of erotic blindness.
Our Ex, the winter mistress of England, is now our Ex-Ex. I can't tell if this death has affected us or not.

Spain is our wife. We are on speaking terms, but she is flaunting her bling to the world.
Byzantium is our mid life fling. We tried to break it off but her and the wife conspired against us.

As you might imagine, it was a horrible Valentines Day.

Notes
Thirty slaves overseas, not making rails.
Thirty five slaves and six workers in the homeland, not making rails.
Ten slaves in Old England, not making rails and needing a ride to the capital.

Peace with Spain: 12 turns.
Silks, Spice and Incense to Spain for Horses and 3 GPT: 13 turns.
Military Tradition in 5 turns, so we could upgrade Samurai to Cavalry rather soon and then build our own Cavalry, while Spain sends us Horses. Don't like depending upon the HorseFaced for Horses..

Peace with Byzantium: 4 turns.
There are Horses in Byzantium that we can claim with a new city. Oh, yeah, buddy boy. And claim them we will.

We need a harbor overseas that is actually on the New World itself. Ani's harbor is fine, but it is just an island.

We are behind Nationalism and Industrialization to Spain.
We are behind Nationalism to Byzantium and up Steam Power. However, Theodora likes her current roads or else is about to learn about Steam Power herself. No swapsies with the Mid-Life Fling of Maniacal Fury.

Plans
Keep on learning Military Tradition.
MilTrad -> Electricity -> Replaceable Parts (for Infantry, Artillery and faster workers).
Bring the Old England slaves down south to help rail our core.
Build a harbor overseas.
Grab Horses from Byzantium.
Rail like there is no tomorrow.

The Ladies of our Life
We got up enough courage to talk to France and the shock killed her.
We were able to hold hands with Egypt and even able to talk to her, until her hands started to get into everything we did. Hand holding is fine; meddling is not. We stuck a frog down her throat.
Russia was our lover; now she is not and we are very glad.
England was our Ex.

Spain is our wife and she is basking in her own glory. Her lawyers out-smarted our lawyers; we are searching for better shysters.
Byzantium is our mid-life fling and has been more than we expected. She dumped Alexandar of Greece and then proceeded to tear his life to shreds in public.
Alexandar has diasappered.

Random Stuff
We railed a lot. We added a new city, YouCantTakeTheSkyFromMe, that gave us our own source of Horeses. We learned Military Tradition and made some Cavalry.

Samurai -> Cavalry: 30 gold per unit. None have been upgraded.

We have built 6 Cavalry on our own.

Industrialization in 2; even at 100% SCI we cannot learn it in one.

The new tech will let us build Factories, which cost 240 shields. We have sevearl universities under construction; they can all be swtiched to Factories.

We have units parked on rails in the core.

We have some settlers overseas. We could use one to them to grab Byzantium's coal SW of Jaynestown.

Worker Tasks/Actions (From NW to SE)
(Overseas)
1NW of Serenity: 12 slaves just railed this tile.
1S of Trojan: 1 worker, irrigating; 3 turns.
1NE of New Satsuma: 3 boats, 9 slaves, ready to sail for the homeland.
(At Sea)
Between Ani and French Fries: 3 boats, 9 slaves, en route to the homeland.
(homeland)
1E of Sado: 6 workers, railing a mountain to connect this city, finish this IBT.
1NE of Yekaterinburgh: 2 slaves, mining a mountian, 8 turns to go. This is just busy work. GalleonShuttle is on her way to pick them up next turn.
1SE of Osaka: 12 slaves that just railed this grassland.
1E of Osaka: 8 slaves that will finish their rails this IBT.
1S of Nagasaki: 12 slaves that just railed to this city.
1S of Sapporo: 12 slaves railling a hill to connect to Zaragoza; hill completes this IBT; two forest tundra tiles remain on this route.
1S of Grenoble: 4 slaves railing a hill to connect to Dijon. Forest tundra and plain tundra remain after this one is done (5 turns).

For no good reason, I was planning to use the native workers to rail to Izumo and Alexandria, which means railing two hills and two grasslands.
One stack of 12 slaves would rail from Nara southwestward through Kagoshima, New Kyoto and New Osaka andd end at Frenchie. Most of this is flatland, but the hill at Kagoshima and the mountains around New Kyoto cannot be avoided.
Another stack of 12 slaves start in Suo and go thorough Rouen, New Edo and Marseilles, Besancon and Chartres before reaching Frenchie. This path has a lot of hill and wooded tundra tiles. It will take longer to complete this path.
The slaves at sea could start railing from Frenchie to Neo-Tokyo and then back towards New Osaka/New Kyoto. There will 18 of them once they all arrive.
The group of 8 slaves at Osaka could be used to add more rails in the core. They won't build many and will take several turns each time (I see 2 stacks of 4 slaves each) but that is up to the next player. I just like using a stack of 12 to lay rails than a stack of 20; easier for me to manage. Not as fast, just easier.
Overseas, the 12 slaves are just planning to rail more grassland. And the worker will continue to play in the water.

Turn 10 -
Cav kills 2/4 Cav and retakes Heraclea.
We make numerous miscellaneous attacks and kill off about half a dozen enemy Cavs. It leaves a few of ours exposed, but I think it's worth it to cut down on attacks on our cities.

Handoff notes:

There are Cavs poised to attack Trebizond next turn; an Army is covering an arty stack to move next to Constantinople as well.
There's another Army/Arty/Cav stack that can move up on Chalcedon next turn.

Back home, the railnet is pretty much finished - there are just a couple of cities to connect in the southern tundra. We can start building Factories in 2-3 cities at a time; I don't want to stop Cav production while we build them.

We have a ship chain set up; the hop next to Ani is weird - I have ships sail from the sea-stack into town, drop units, then return to their station. It's been working pretty well.
