UNGY-04 Who do they think they are?

No need for rants here, everything seems to be set up well.

I go for combustion as planned after 1 turn of 0% slider. I also revolt to emancipation after 2-3 turns. At the moment we have more happiness than we need, but once we DoW on Korea we will lose happiness resources and get quite a bit of WW so I decided against caste. I didn't go for FS as another civic meant 2 turns instead of 1.

Usage of airships reveals everything Joao has, both land and what used to be his navy. I find a bunch of galleons so I go after them with our navy SoD.

Civ4ScreenShot0148.jpg

At the end of the turnset we have several frigates with 5 EXP and 2 (IIRC) with more than 10. One of them got another healing promotion and the second C3, the C3 one should get upgraded to a destroyer.

I looked closely at WK's culture situation and he is definitely not using his slider, we have good time still.

We capture Oporto 1785 AD.

We capture Guimarães 1800 AD. The same year Napoleon drops out of WHEOOH without attacking anyone. Charlemagne dropped out of it at some point as well.

1804: Thanks to airships I know what garrison Joao is keeping in his cities so I can easily split my group into 3 knowing I have enough for all of them. These 3 stacks will annihilate the Portugese in 1806.

Civ4ScreenShot0152.jpg

IBT: Joao, scared to death by the artillery and infantry outside of his remaining cities, becomes a vassal of Tokugawa -- Tokugawa DoW on us. I guess a quick war vs. the Japanese before the Koreans is in order.

I start on the Pentagon in Mayapan.

Civ4ScreenShot0153.jpg

1806: Joao is no more. The 2 big cities had a lot of infrastructure, but the bounty of Faro was sweet as well -- we got 5 workers from it.

Civ4ScreenShot0156.jpg

I decide to stop having fun here and leave the Japanese war to the next player.

Wk doesn't have AL yet. However, he does have rocketry.

Meh, my 'copy' just got bugged. As a result the report is pretty confusing atm, check back in 10 minutes for a fix.

Edit: Fixed.

I suggest vassaling Toku as soon as we can. We don't really need the extra land now, diplomacy sucks anyway, and time is the most important factor here. The earlier we declare on WK, the safer.

Yes I agree.
I would say keep up the scouting with airships to avoid a nasty surprise, continue vs. Toku until he caps--we should have minimal losses there in any case.
Watch Wang to see if he pumps culture.
Look for a bio trade with Charlie but don't give RR or AL.

Roster:
Mystyfly UP
Ungy On deck
Silverbullet
Pigswill -
Rusten - just played

Maybe Wang is going for space - rocketry is an odd tech for culture after all. Eiffel Tower (ET) could be part of his space plan: free broadcast towers from Eiffel Tower = "ET. Phone home".

I wonder if Shaka's still Confucian. If so we could revert to Theocratic Confucianism (lvl 3 units in most cities) and use Shaka as our ally/war-dog (and of course turn on him if we need that last 3% for domination). If not, then forget the whole idea.

I don't see the point of another revolution. Shaka already has enough on his hands, if it's us, there is nothing we can do now. If it's not us, he will be busy with someone else for a while.

No more revolutions unless we pop a GA from a random event or something similar. Once the Pentagon is complete our units will get 5 XP anyway, so theocracy won't make a big difference.

And yeah, watch WK really close, because he is in FS with all those wonders. Once he starts pumping his slider it won't take long for him to reach 50K, especially with those huge cities (maybe cancel resource trades that gives him health?). Make sure you cancel OB when/if he drops out of mercantilism.

I agree about cancelling health/happy resource trades with him. We are not desperate for happiness anymore, and after vassaling toku we will get some more happiness (I remember he has dye and we also get +1 for influencing other nations).

Playing now. Small PPP:

- fight toku until cap

- try to trade for bio with charly (not giving AL/RR)

- use airships for scouting

- upgrade C3 frigate

- turn on wang ASAP

- oh and have fun playing civ again for the first time in... a month!! :woohoo:

Played 10 turns. They were all about finishing the toku-war and setting up for killing wang.

IHT

I guess we can forget the pentagon

Civ4ScreenShot0000.jpg

I check the F8, Seoul is still 44 turns away (@ 30k currently), the other cities 100+ turns

Interesting news, Wang built another nice wonder

Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg

OFC we got the seat.

I spot Shaka's fleet. Quite some SOD (in case those galleons aren't empty)

Civ4ScreenShot0002.jpg

Those ships were sailing north then west. Only possible targets are Nappy and Wang. I keep my fingers crossed it's wang (which is also my guess).

Some dude, Belisarius shows up boasting about his warring skills. Who does he think he is?

Now that's a joke

Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg

Well, there was more action this turn than that stupid random event:

Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0008.jpg

First 2 cities kept, last one razed. It just pushed toku over the "refuses to talk" line. I quickly dialed up... charly and made a trade

Civ4ScreenShot0010.jpg

followed by this

Civ4ScreenShot0011.jpg

Comments: As you can see, toku is charly's worst enemy. Capitulating toku would reduce relations and probabely push him to cautious (which happened indeed, also with wang...). I wouldn't call that trade even but what the heck. I doubt he'll DOW us and he won't find many AIs to trade it around.

Another rather rare picture:

Civ4ScreenShot0012.jpg

Sometime during the end of the round, a vote came up. According to the BUG-UN screen we won't win "accidentally" but I thought why not...

Nappy decided he didn't want to like us much anymore when he made this demand

Civ4ScreenShot0017.jpg

---

I have nearly all our army in the ex-portuguese city nearest to Wang. We should split up in maybe 2 stacks. I suggest capturing the city on the east first, it's not that good defended and we can rebase our airships for more efficient scouting/bombarding. Another, bigger stack should strike near the capital taking out the core-cities.

Shaka's fleet is quite close:

Civ4ScreenShot0018.jpg

I suggest waiting until he declares. If he declares on wang, we can wait another few turns until he gets slaughtered, then we can clean up.

Wang has decent military and was more or less able to keep up military, tough we definitely surpassed him (at the cost of being less advanced - he has industrialism...). In his capital is probabely most of his army: 20 artillery, 15 cavs, 20 SAMs.

We are 2 turns away from Industrialism.

I didn't do much rushbuying. I suggest turning off research completely for 5-10 turns and buy tanks. I expect a tought fight against Wang - hopefully a worthy showdown.

I built mainly infantry as we had way more artillery than infantry. Infantry were usually picked to defend and were thus often weakened which slowed down conquest by quite a bit (the 2 cities I captured took 2 turns of fighting each while we had far too many artillery. I also built many destroyers but no transports. I'm not sure we should upgrade our galleons. They'll do fine, they won't defend anyway and don't need to travel far. I also built a few airships.

I "forgot" we need to use galleons to get our troops to wang  tough I doubt it'll slow us down much.

Toku somehow got AL and has quite some infantry. We might ship our stack of obsolete units over to him for ugrading. BTW I didn't know what they were there for (in SP I'd have just deleted them...) but they might be some use in toku hands... Also I told toku to research facism as it was the only tech he can research we don't have. Don't forget to set him another tech (he was researching combustion when he capitulated) and target city once we declare. BTW his research is astonishingly high IMO. With some buttering up he might become useful. I already demanded all resources we lacked. Health is the issue, we should do something about it. Also we should build NP, probabely in Mayapan (not sure, the city attempting the pentagon).

I already sold Toku some tech (don't remember) but we might want to sell philo (nappy) and lib (shaka) for some cash too.

My turns weren't good ones for our worker society. I lost all 5 workers in ex-portugal to toku (what? cuirassiers have 2MP? D'oh...) but captured 1 new. Our other workers were mainly set to "Trade Network", someone might want to remove it. But all cities were nearly fully developed (I build a windmill over a mine here and there) and I didn't have the nerves to build railroads on all those tiles.

Some general toughts on Wang: After looking at the power chart, I assume he has been building up a small defensive army to turtle to a space or culture vic. His power didn't improve much during my set. I expect to have a much easier walk if we wait another say 10 turns, until shaka softens him up (should he DOW him) and have well-organised stacks, probabely a brandnew tankstack as well.

We might want to pass single currency (I think it will help us most with most cities) or nuclear non-proliferation (we have the production advantage so traditional warfare is best for us), although the game will probable be decided before it matters.

OK-got it.
Looks like we're in good shape.
Wang has no oil, and we're his coal (not for long).
So plan to build up--see what the Zulu are up to.
Start rushbuying tanks.
Since Wang has no oil, we're OK with our navy.
Not sure if we invade on my set--it might just be a building set.
Skip the no-nuke resolution--we can always get that later if we want it.
Go for single currency since we have so many cities.

OK-here we go. it's been a while since I've played civ.
Cancel coal trade with Wang.

My thinking is that we'll land our SOD at Wang's eastern end, then a second wave from our homeland to his west once Wang's SOD heads east.

1828....

IBT Shaka DOW's Wang. We'll watch this with interest as we build our tanks:)
Wang's garrison at Ulsan has some damage? But very little.

1830 Industialism in--set research to plastics? at 0%

1832 Zulu forces have retreated. I'm now thinking that Shaka suicided his entire force of 24 units amphibiously and only caused minimal damage. I guess fortified protective infantry vs amphib grennies or something should barely get a scratch.

Charlie declares on Shaka.

Hmm. I'm a little leery of invasions here since Wang can reach his SOD to anywhere we land (around 50 units). If he softens us up with arty we would really need to land a big stack.
I'm thinking we continue to build our forces and take a detour and eliminate Charlie. He could be annoying lately if Wang bribes him against us.
Wang is building culture in city 3 at 300/turn so he's 120 turns off at that pace.

Sorry I'll have to break it here and continue tomorrow or Sun at latest.

Things are under control--our production is really impressive.

Maybe eliminate Chuck and then put everything into a giant stack to survive Wang's initial SoD. If we can destroy the main stack without losing too many units in the process our forces can then seperate into three or four reasonable stacks to roll up Korea, at which point its game over.

that was my thinking. We need some turns here to build tanks and more ships, etc. Might as well take out Charlie--we won't lose much.

OK I switch gears to attack Charlie while we build our forces for Wang.

I lose my report most of the way through so this will be brief (it wasn't very exciting anyway).

We pass the single currency resolution.

Wang starts the culture pump--he won't be close so I leave the OB.

We get an interesting event:

Civ4ScreenShot0421.jpg

Sorry Charlie:

Civ4ScreenShot0422.jpg

We lose a few units despite our tech advantage but I take an extra turn and Charlie is no more:

Civ4ScreenShot0424.jpg

Our forces are overwhelming, we'll be ready to attack Wang midway through the next set. My thought is that we just land an enormous SOD next to Pyongyang on the hill and let him bring his SOD to us. Anyway we have plenty of options

Got it.
I will play it probably tomorrow or the day after.

It seems we are winning easily from this point, so if mystyfly or someone else want to just finish the game from here I am fine with that too.

Is there going to be UNGY-05?

Looking good. Might be worth knocking out some more artillery as CG3 infantry could be tough to dislodge from a city even after its defences have been neutralised.

I'm fine with anyone who wants to finishing it off here.
I have to confess I tend to lose interest at this point.
I haven't been playing much civ lately but I'd like to keep going.
Anybody got any ideas?
