Uniforms

Yes, you're right - nothing we have today even comes close to that thing. Yeah.

YOU are going to tell ME those uniforms are never used. This is a jest of monumental proportions.

Hey, go join up, and I GUARANTEE you'll see them. I suppose since they're not shown on CNN, or BBC, we don't ever use them, eh? That's enough CFC for me, for one day. :wallbash:

well i dont really see them, not even in movies, but still ive seen much better uniforms outthere.

The first uniforms are Gala uniforms. The USMC guys outside the white house can be seen with those on at all times.

You're thinking of the "Dress Blue" uniform. That first pic there was Officer's "Evening Dress" Uniform. You won't see that outside the White House - that's just the backdrop art. You'll see that particular uniform at private formal Marine Corps functions & ceremonies / so, i.e. - YOU, the non-USMC personnel, will probably never see those uniforms, or at least, *probably* never. But, they're used - trust me. :D

That last one is the band uniform, which you can see all the time - just go to a bootcamp graduation ceremony for ex. Depicted in that pic is the 'President's Own' - USMC Band, the elite/premier band, if you will.

Outside our embassies, you will see Marines wearing the "Blue-White Dress" uniform, aka dress whites, as we call 'em. No, not the bulldog - that's the mascot :)

Edit: I suppose it can be confusing to the avreage person, who was not aware of the VAST ARRAY of uniforms we have. But, there is a solution to this... contact your nearest recruiter and...

There's one thing I've never been able to understand - why is it those guys back then never put any effort into working out, especially the abs. I mean, was is a symbol of status back then, to have a giant paunch sticking out, as if to say, "I am well placed in society, look at how well I eat"?

well with some of those uniforms ist hard to tell, but i admit thats not a very good pic either, but the grenedeirs were. in most countrys you had to be 6ft tall, and pretty strong to be one.

I seem to remember seeing numerous pics of Napoleon, where he definitely appeared to be in serious need of a colonic, I'm sure you've seen them too. Kind of takes away from the whole 'military appearance' thing - and the uniform as well.

Don't mind me, I was brainwashed to be obsessed with being physicaly fit, and looking good in uniform - and upkeeping your uniform to a state of "perfection". That's why I notice it so much with these portraits.

One final thought on that...
In the Marines, we always had a great time laughing at overweight Navy personnel. It's a longtime tradition in the USMC. Seeing anyone that's fat in uniform just instantly makes me think of ridiculing them - since we placed such a high standard on physical appearance. But, I guess back in a different day, in a different place - things would have been looked at differently.

But I'll tell you one thing for sure, if that guy in that pic there showed up and called Marines into formation, and give them orders, we wouldn't be able to take him seriously, and the chuckling would be uncontrollable. If you're not a lean, mean, fighting machine, you've got no business being a leader. At least, that's how we see it.

A fat Marine general. Can't even imagine it.

Yes that is a pudgy Washington, alright. All these portraits lead me to believe it was 'manly', or 'distinguished' to have a bulging pauch back then. It's almost like, the smaller & more feminine your hands, and weak-looking your upper body, and more bulging your gut is, the greater leader you are. I don't understand it.

Speaking of Germans, What about Bismarck? Was he overweight in his later years? Or is that Hindenburg I'm thinking of...

I do distinctly remember a guy with a big mustache, a pointy helmet, and a gut that stuck out over his belt, carrying around and saluting with his baton/staff-thingy, whatever. I think it is Hindenburg I'm thinking of.
