Oh yes, close order drill, the single most effective training factor for developing discipline, military bearing, professionalism, instant obedience to orders, etc. - totally useless in battle!

I wonder why they put more emphasis on drill than anything else in Marine bootcamp? Eh? Based on what you just said, I'd venture to guess you've never served, Curt. Only a life-long civilian could even think of saying what you just did. Well, an Air Force and/or Coast Guardsman might say that. :p

It is essential - especially in battle. There's marching orders like, "By the right flank!"... "March!" - and the platoon with simulataneously turn right 90 deg. In battle, this would be a quick movement to shift the direction of engagement. In battle, everyone needs to know what to do, when to do it, and everyone need to be in the same frame of mind, otherwise it looks like a big cluster f**k, and people get killed. It ALL starts with close order drill. That is the FOUNDATION of everything in the military. And the more elite the service, the more they heavily emphasize it.

Close order drill forges the military mind. It is essential. Vital. Trust me, it works. You stop thinking, and become a cog in a machine - exactly what the military wants you to be. :)

not only that PantheraTigris2, but it makes a nice show in a parade, perhaps a morale booster

Yes, it's good for showing off, and having a sense of pride - but make no mistake, that's not what it's really for. Back in the olden days, they actually WOULD be called to attention, in formation, forward... march, and fight that way. Commands would be given, just like in drill, and everyone would know what to do instantly, in an organized manner. Think Napoleonic Wars, American Civil War, etc. etc. It is certainly not historically useless in battle, quite the contrary - and just because modern battle tactics have changed, that doesn't mean we no longer need the benefits of drill.

And btw, the whole premise behind "pass in review" - where the commander stands and watches his men march by (something will continue to do to this day) - has always been an 'inspection' if you will, to visually take note of how proficient the men are at close order drill. One can take small things, like the weapon hand placement on those Chinese partroopers, and get an idea of "how well trained are these men"... how ready are they? It's very easy to see. And that's what the commander is looking for. It's not just a parade 'to look good'. It shows level of training, and level of readiness. If your men look like machines, and it looks like you're seeing nothing but identical clones (with different skin color perhaps), then the commander 's expectations have been met. If you want to see such a high level of proficiency, I would recommend going to a USMC bootcamp graduation ceremony. Don't go to Army - they don't even come close. Seriously.
