I do love the concept art for the Sheinaran, and look forward to seeing the finished unit. Congrats to Cam, and thanks to Utah for doing this in the first place.

I'm so pumped right now, you don't even know! :D

I can't believe I won. I've been wanting this unit pretty much since we started working on the WoT mod a couple years back.

Thanks utah. I know whatever you come up with will be spectacular.

I was hoping for the war wagon units because maybe that might appear in MEM.:mischief: or any other medieval unit would be just as good.:)

The sheinaran looks really interesting though, I'll have to chack out the WoT mod now.:)

Congratulations to CamJH for winning! :) While I am green like my contestant of envy I'm looking forward to seeing the Schene... Scheise... Shien... the winner in-game! A good choice by both CamJH and utahjazz7, and a very worthy winner that will add coolness to most fantasy mods. :goodjob:

It's a shame that out of so many units that would see use in multiple mods only one gets made. Maybe some of the unit makers could conspire to do a lottery together, and then the "win, place, and show" units could all get made, albeit by different creators.

We have that. Its called the Unit Request Thread 2 ;) But it isn`t exactly working out :hmm:

Congrats CamJH. I think the winner has kind of a medieval look with its tunic

Yeah, and as I understand, that prop is also needed around here :)

Congratulations CamJH!

No, the unit request thread is not working out. I try to look through it, but as of late, there are less requests posted than there are posts discussing requests—most of them trying to help hunt down units, of course. But, it's discouraging to have to dig for requests in the request thread itself. That's why I wanted to disqualify from the tournament anyone who posted more than once. I didn't want to have to read through the thread to hunt down the actual unit requests. ;)

And, since the unit request thread isn't being used heavily anymore, I thought the idea of a lottery type thread might bring out some fresh, inspiring requests. And, I was not disappointed. There were quite a number of top-notch unit requests submitted.

Looking at it from the other side of the mirror:
A) I'll admit I haven't looked at the request thread in a while, but when I did I saw more requests than replies with offers to make them.
B) I see many good creators post things like "that looks like an interesting idea, but I've got N units in my work queue already", which discourages potential requesters like me.
C) When I have requested a unit or two, like the Ratha (Indian chariot), I hear a lot of "that's too complicated" and not enough "cool! a challenge!" which discourages also.
D) I've got so many things I'd like to request that it's hard to pick one I think would get made; furthermore I often feel like my requests would be so "niche" as to be ignored (cf Hikaro's requests for help on FF, for example). So I discourage myself.

I totally agree, man. Sometimes I get bored and look through that thread to look for some interesting designs, but there are very few interesting and descriptive ones. And most of the ones that are have already been done by you, (i.e. the Sumerian Infantry, Hellenistic Axeman, etc.)

Well, the thing is most people just name some random unit. There are no pics to work off of (if there are, they are usually small and blurry), and no descriptions of what they look like. Anyway, most of the requests there are for modern tanks/naval units. Now, I don't have a problem with that, as it adds variety to modern mods, but it gets annoying seeing a page full of random requests for "Random number/Letter combination" tank. And Wyrm's made like 10 billion tanks. There has to be something that looks pretty close to that. And most of the time, that unit has already been made! And someone wants a new paint job on it or something. I don't think that constitutes a unit request.

C) When I have requested a unit or two, like the Ratha (Indian chariot), I hear a lot of "that's too complicated" and not enough "cool! a challenge!" which discourages also.

Ok, that Ratha looked pretty damn awesome, but how the hell could someone animate that in Poser?! It's not a challenge, it's damn near impossible! But I guess if anyone could pull it off, it'd be utah, so I'll give that one to you, ;). The thing is, would it kill people to request a simple humanoid every once in a while? Cmon, man. You know how hard it would be to pull off a gilded chariot of the Indian gods. Pretty much everything would have to be made from scratch. And most unit creators can't create models (except Bjorn and utah, of course) and so we have to pull a few tricks with existing models. We're just not skilled enough to make really complicated things,

Well, request em anyway! Cimbri requests like a billion things, and occasionally some get made (i.e. Sumerian Infantry) I'm sure if people requested a few things, one would be plausible to make.

I know it would be beyond my skills now, but I hope I'll be there some day. I know people have made chariot units in the past. Even a few pointers about how they did it would be inspirational.

Point well taken! I've got plenty of images and background info laying around. I guess I'll have to make a thread requesting the Indian units I see a need for, laying out some common props that could be made and used repeatedly, and some proto- unit lines, so that units of increasing difficulty of modelling could be built up to.

I'll admit I haven't looked at the request thread in a while, but when I did I saw more requests than replies with offers to make them.

I just looked at the last two pages. If I recall correctly, there were only 4 actual requests; two of them requesting the same unit. But, there were about 13 other posts commenting on various aspects of unit creation, possible stand-ins, etc. All are helpful, of course, but they make it hard to look through the requests and discourage doing so.

...then maybe you could use this thread's first couple of pages as your unit request thread - i.e. if you're thinking of a unit to do, glance at what's been requested here rather than the official unit request thread.

I know I'm being cheeky ;) .

Cool. We can always use more modern infantry types. There's enough swordsman out there already.
De gustibus non disputandum.
