Unit requests thread

This isn't really a request for a unit, but its a request to help me trouble-shoot these units. I'm making a Congo module for my mod, and I am giving it flavored units. I am trying to get the Longbowman and Knight to work, but for whatever reason the skins don't show up in the game. Its just a white unit.

I checked both of them in NifSkope and they show up with the skins on them and everything but in game they don't. I can't figure out how to fix this. I've reskinned plenty of units and they always showed up correctly, and everything I've tried has failed so far. I was wondering if someone could take a look at them and see if they can't figure out what is going wrong here.

I have attached both the files for the Longbowman and Knight. I have also posted a screen shot of how they look in-game (compared with the rest of their buddies (I reskinned the Crossbowman and he showed up correctly for example) as well as an image of the Longbowman in NifSkope so you can see what he is supposed to look like. Hopefully its something simple that I overlooked, thanks in advance for any help.

I think you might be missing a effect texture - probably gloss. If a UnitShaderGloss shader is used, but no Gloss texture is assigned, it will look like this. I can't check right now - no access to niftools etc - but you can easyly check yourself and if i am right fix it - you woukld need to either change the shader to a gloss-less one (i think make sense, as it's mostly skin) or assign a gloss texture to the gloss slot.

Alright, I'll look into it. The original model I used didn't have a gloss file in it though. But I didn't see if that worked, so I guess I'll have to look into it.

EDIT: Yeah there doesn't seem to be any gloss needed, weird. Anyone else have any idea why this isn't working?

EDIT2: Well I checked the original unit, the one where I got the model from, and lo and behold that unit has the same problem when it is in-game, but in NifSkope it is textured. So my question is why this would happen? The model that was used here doesn't seem to have a gloss file involved (even in corresponding units that are similar) and I tried different skins and they all show up in NifSkope but in the game they still show up as all-white units.

The problem could be he model, not the texture.Maybe you should use another model for the units.

No the reason for the model looking correctly textured in nifscope, but loosing texture in game must be a screwy shader setting.
I am back at home PC now, i will take a look at it.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. But this one has a sweet mask that I wanted to use. Is there a way to edit the model to show the texture? The issue is that in NifSkope it shows up, but in the game it doesn't, so its hard to tell if any changes I make are actually taking effect without loading up the game everytime. Which I have done like ten times.

The question is not if the model you edited had a gloss texture included (apparently it did not work anyway ;)) but if the shader does need one. And yes, it does require a gloss map.

I went the easy way and changed it to TCiv4Skinning (without gloss). I don't think the unit really needs gloss - is mostly skin anyway...
This should fix it, however my old graphics card does handle gloss in the game in a odd way (or not at all). Meaning your original unit was looking fine on my PC already - this is probably what happened to the author of it as well...

So you got it to work?! Sweet!

LOL, and I actually gave up and just stuck in some boring, non-masked, units. Well I'll be sure to use these instead. Thank you!

Try them first - as i said: They look ok in my game now (and before) - but for some odd reason my Hardware is willing to 'overlook' this kind of screw-up...
But from experience they should be ok now.

They worked, I tried them. You can CHECK THEM OUT if you want to. Before you came out with those units I got discouraged and made a back-up set just in case. But I an definitely going to use the ones you made. You can see a comparison of the two sets though in that link.

I'd like a modern Great Prophet... I think that in the Modern era, it should look sorta like an evangelist.

You know, somebody sorta like a Billy Graham (or maybe Martin Luther King, if you're playing as an African civ).

I'd also like to see a Great Artist exclusively for the English civ, one that looks like a Beatle, y'know, with the mop top and stuff.

Well Martin Luther King wasn't African, and I think his position was more of a civil rights activist than a religious personality (although the two went hand in hand in many repsects). So maybe Desmond Tutu would make a better modern African great prophet. Something to that effect.

I tried reskinning a zulu unit to look like a polynesian-type unit. What do you guys think? He could probably use some tats, but that's a little above my skill-level.

I really would like to see a Humvee Avenger SAM which was used from 1991 and is still in service at the moment. It would be a really cool special Modern Light Air Defence Unit for the US. China obviously like a few other countries likes the system as they are copying it so there is potential for reskinning to other countries. Also I would like a proper AH-64D made out of the AH-64A by adding a small radome to the top...

This should be an easy request ... some slight modification of a submarine would do ...

These ships are what were known as "whalebacks". For the most part, they were only found on the Great Lakes, but they are important in naval evolution as the design inspired both the turret steamers and the hulls of early submarines.

Hey everyone, I wanted to thank Refar for helping me with those Congolese units. I made them into a musketman and a cuirassier as well. And I figured if anyone wanted to use these units I'd post them up.

Looks good :).
I don't think any player would complain about it, and that's the signal you can get :).
The same for the congolese-units :).

I second this. Civ-specific Great Artists could be nifty. Maybe two for each civ, one early, one modern. We already have Elvis for America, maybe Walt Whitman or Mark Twain could be an early model. You could have Rembrandt for the Dutch, Mozart for Germany, Tolstoy for Russia, and so on.

Hey all, I'd like to request Unique Unit for my own country Latvia. We already have modular civ and leaderhead, so the only thing we need is UU. So I would like to request Latvian rifleman, which replaces rifleman. Nothing much just reskin of regular rifleman. Here are the pictures:

This could be a good Christmas present for me. :D
