I like the idea of Economics, especially considering we want to upgrade Cuirs soon, but it's a gamble so I don't know. Might be worth a try.

In any case, after Gunpowder/Economics I would rather tech Optics before anything else if it's still not up for grabs (we might want to build a couple of triremes in the process)

Merc is better. It gives us 3 gold/beakers per city while decentralism will give us 1 trade route to Isabella for each city she has. Might give us about 15 commerce in total.

Free market is much more on even grounds with Merc.

Economics is a good tech, but how many turns has Isabella had education? It seems like a to long shot for me. I prefer optics or printing press.

Yes, economics is too risky. If we're not first and Isabella is teching it then it is not "suboptimal", but rather completely useless. Printing press for me. Optics we can extort from Ragnar worst case. Only reason to tech optics now would be to follow up with astronomy and get trade routes with the other continent.

Why build wellies when we can build knights? Cheaper to upgrade. I'd rather have the extra gold personally.

+1. exactly. I agree with you about building knights, even if it would be sad to not build at least one amphibious welly (I guess that's wellies singular pigswill?)

edit about trading partners (optics): less important than getting the biggest window for cavs imo. We need to improve base tech power, aka more cities.
