US offering to talk to Iran

If the Iran is the only threat to world peace, yes, this would be a prudent withdrawal. But what kind of message does it send to the other rogue states? If you are going to blackmail us you better do a really good job? This will surely give DPRK and Al Qaeda etc. some encouragement and there is no guarantee they will stop sponsoring terrorism or shut down nuclear research. They did ignore the UN's calls for it to stop nuclear research before.

The US already has that reputation. It attacked Iraq but treats N. Korea with kid gloves. That tells the world everything that it needs to know. In a way though, this is just a return to reality and probably a much-needed dose of common sense. The whole vision of a democratic freedom domino effect supported by US troops was a romantic vision in the clouds in the first place. Yeah, the US could do it, if it was willing to sacrifice magnitudes more men then was lost in Iraq, destroy its economy and reintroduce conscription. Unless the US was willing to do that, the neo-con dream of the US military smashing its way through the world to spread the American dream was bound to crash into reality at some point. Actually even there was the will to make the sacrifices for it to work America would have inspired such enmity it could only hold its gains by becoming a true imperalist in the old sense of the word. The only reason that this represents a loss of face for America is because it built up all those unrealistic expectations in the first place. Now the dream has met reality.

Xshayathiya, thanks. I'm not sure if he really meant that but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

And I agree that wars are bad and should be avoided if possible. I was really pretty pissed with the US for declaring war on Iraq with such lousy pretexts. I just hope that the rest of the world wil support them if another threat comes up.

The US taking a step back now is a good chance for the EU and other countries that they do can shoulder the responsibility of fighting for world peace. If this happens, the US will no longer feel like the lone ranger and go against the UN. And no one can accuse the US for being arrogant and the US can stop shouldering such a heavy burden. Everybody wins. Hopefully that will be the case.
