Given the nature of the internet, I tend to think the control issue more symbolic than anything.
It does, however, seem to pose the potential for abuse - although no more than currently - but in light of the symbolism, it may be considered to bode worse.
I think the whole 'they invented it' thing a bit of a joke - surely, in reality, the 'invention' was an international affair?
When the US decided to retain / limit control of the GPS system, the europeans decided to set-up their own. Maybe this will happen again with the internet?
