v1.16f: Issues? Bugs? This is the thread

From the manual : "Having a rival declare war on you actually decreases war weariness, perhaps because it relieves the prewar uncertainty and tension."

Doesn't last, but you do get a bit of happiness to start with. Not a bug, I'm happy to say.

Well, I noticed that in the manual, but it seems that 'war weariness' can go negative then, if you can get a positive effect out of it. It also doesn't explain why I lost happiness with a monarchy when giving away some tech to a rival. It makes me think there's a bonus to happiness based on how dominant the game thinks you are. I haven't seen a penalty to being subserviant, but I'll know to worry if I click on an unhappy citizen, and a % of them say "we think you're a big wimp" :)

Well, maybe that explains the lack of responses.. I apparently should check my posts more carefully or at least make sure I'm fully awake before posting. Galleys are what I'm having trouble with.. not caravels. Any kind of confirmation that this is a bug or a slap upside the head to let me know it's supposed to be that way would be great. :p

Galleys are only able to end turns on shore squares safely, there's a (high) chance they'll sink if they end the turn on a sea or ocean squares. It was messed up pre-patch, but they've fixed it now. The Great Lighthouse makes it so you can end turns on Sea squares.

Well, I was aware of that.. the trouble is that I can't move off of shore squares at all.. It's not a matter of the ships sinking, they just can't go there! Very strange. I haven't had time to try it in another game, just wondered if anyone else had run into this.

Strange. Do you remember what tech it was? (No idea if that's significant at all, but I'm definitely curious)

Hmmm, what kind of empire are you ruling? :D
You start a war 'out of curiosity' and the people celebrate!

Well, I´m King Bloodthirst the Allmighty and my citizens are only too happy to "shed their swords into the bleeding hearts of our enemies".

Before the patch was installed they were all hippies. :love2:

Even when my Empire was attacked those unpatriotic pacifists demonstrated against the war. Even when the war was going great and enemy cities fell by the dozens, they went out on the streets demanding the bloodshed to stop. And the longer the war went on, the more I had to bribe them with silks, jewelry and stuff to make them normal ignorant consumers.

It was not until the patch that I became King Bloodthirst. Now my soldiers can keep killing enemies in droves and all my citizens are glued to the TV watching dead bodies. And after getting their daily dose of guts and blood they walk out in the streets and shoot of fireworks into the sky, singing war songs.:soldier:

Seiously now, this has to be an unintended effect of the patch. A lot of people have complained about war weariness being to huge a problem (not me) and perhaps Firaxis just toned it down way too much.

I have found that when i use the "point and click" method of moving sea units, it wont let u move to a square that will cause u to sink in it should u end your turn in that square eg ocean or sea for galleys. U can still move into them using the keyboard method though

I cannot seem to find this on the post, but please correct me if I missed it.

My people no longer build my palace! Despite being in the middle of the Middle Ages, having gone through a Golden Age, and created nearly every wonder that exists so far (including some Expanionist/Industrial ones while playing my Americans), I have never (not once!) had a pop-up screen saying that my people wanted to build my palace. It happened plenty of times pre-patch.

Am I just that lame this time in making my people happy, or is it an issue?

I noticed last night that my people aren't building a palace either. Beyond that, I am also experiencing the no lines on the diplomacy screen error.

I'm running Windows 98 on a Gateway PentiumII.

Hmmm:confused:

In my current game, first one started after the patch, I haven't seen the Palace screen yet either. I'm top dog by many points, have the Republic lots of lux's, Wonders, etc, etc and still no Palace.

That little bit of ego stroking is sorely missed.:(

Okay, here are the problems I have noticed with the 1.16f Civ 3 patch, and they are serious!

1. After entering a Golden Age for my civiliation, EVERY single city of mine entered into civil disorder that would not disppear even after significantly increasing the number of entertainers per each city.

2. Relationship lines, such as in war, disappear.

3. AI civs complete wonders in absurd amount of time. How is it that my capital, which happens to be the most grand city of all of the civs (according to the top city chart), cannot complete a wonder faster than the AI civs? THIS, in fact, after I had already been working on a different wonder that I had to scrap b/c, again, another AI civ completed their's before me. So, all of the shields from the previous wonder went towards the new wonder, and still I could not complete it before one of the AI civs. I would say, on average, AI civs complete wonders in a matter of 5 - 7 turns regardless of the size and production of the city building the wonder.

4. Random crashes because of page faults. Happened two or three times so far in just one game.

5. Palace improvements nearly impossible to come by. After rising to a score of 600 I had only been asked to improve my palace *one* time.

I'm fed up with Firaxis. They didn't exactly rush out a patch for Civ 3 right away, even though one was needed. They had plenty of time to test this new patch, and it has seemingly created even more problems, esp. gameplay issues that need resolution right away.

Jeff,

Just wanted to let you know that after I put in the second patch, things are working smoothly.

War weariness seems to be right, the people are upgrading my palace, relationship lines are staying put, etc.

I have a Dell PIII-866 on Windows XP, with an Geforce256 card. Obviously, these problems are computer specific. Not that that makes things any better, but it's worth noting.

They'll make up for it... I hadn't gotten a palace popup until the mid-middle ages, but suddenly, all in one go, I built 5 palace improvements. It happened when I won a war.

So maybe the people really just need more motivation, but they'll build more to make up for the lost time?

I started this game under 1.07, and it now crashes as soon as the AI Russian starts moving units. I was able to limp along using Norton CrashGuard to "Revive", but the game was too unstable after this point to matter.

I've played this one for two weeks - hate to see the game stop now.

I've uninstallled and reapplied the patch twice, and tried the game on three different systems, each with diffreent configurations. Same problem on all of them.

When will we see the next patch????

(How do I get the attachment to stick???)

Having crashes at various times when I've got Eudora running in the background, oddly. Shutting it down seems to eliminate pretty much all of those problems.

I realize that this is one of those 'then just don't do it' kinda things, but it is a little agravating.. And surely Eudora isn't the only program causing this kind of problem?

I just wanted to post this here, in case the Firaxis folks are using this thread as a source for what needs fixing next ...

As others have noted elsewhere, there appears to be a major leak (resources/memory/swapfile) .. my guess is that it's in the swapfile management. Symptoms are pretty much the same in all reports ... after x amount of turns, the system slows down until it finally locks up. In my case, after twenty turns or so on a huge map, I get unexplained delays (like a unit in the middle of a move stalling for three or four minutes), and I've had my share of lockups, too. After a game exit, my hard drive will chatter for almost a minute or so cleaning up the swapfile -- and I have more than sufficient memory not to need a big swapfile.

System:
PII 300 (o/c to ~330 MHz)
256MB RAM
Hercules GeForce MX II (32MB)
Hercules 21.81 Detonator XP drivers
Reduced Hardware Acceleration
DirectX 8.1
Windows 98SE, with all patches
256MB swapfile (Fixed, not managed)

A follow-up to my previous message ...

Just for s**ts and giggles, I ran the W98 Systems Monitor app while playing the game and waited for the inevitable lockup ... turns out that the problem is swapfile thrash. I had just taken an enemy city and selected the raze option, and then the game stopped doing anyything (or otherwise responding) for about fifteen minutes. I hit Cntl-escape, which gave me the Windows taskbar and then I looked at the Systems Monitor display (which was responding just fine, thank you). My CPU Utilization was around 88%, and I could sit and watch the Swapfile Page-In and Page-Out counters just keep going up. Total Memory Allocated was running around 320MB, with 18MB of swapfile in use. Eventually, I did a Cntl-Alt-Delete to cancel the task, which Windows assured me "was not responding."

Are you listening, Firaxis?

Before the first and second patch, none of these was an issue. I am running a HP XL775, 800Mz, 384 Mb RAM, Windows XP Home.

Crashes (I have had to relearn the Bill Gates Salute - Ctrl & Alt & Del)

Diplomatic Screen does not work (Does not show who's at war, etc.):vomit:

Does not track units as they move off the screen.

Air superiority mission sometimes causes machine to lock up.:suicide:

Shift-P does not work (set workers to auto clean pollution only).:(

So, when do we get a patch that works?"

I obviously spoke (typed) too hastily or else I didn't know my head from my arse. :crazyeyes
That game has now advanced into the Middle Ages and I'm getting all the Palace building ego stroking I could want:king:

Actually I don't think that it's a problem of citizens needing sudden motivation. I've gone through one game with out a single palace pop-up. However, I still was able to build myself a nice palace. Why? you might ask. Well, it seemed that my citizens were ready to build addtions to my palace but the pop-up just never showed up. So periodically I looked at the palace screen and every once in a while it would ask me to place the addtion to the palace. An OBVIOUS bug which will hopefully be fixed in later patches.

I don't know is it connected with patch directly but my game is crashing when i'm trying to end my turn. Tried to replay that turn from auto-save but game was crashed again at the end. Tell me if something wrong with it. Save attached.
