Vangelis

[Kyriakos]

Well, Vangelis is the name Evangelos Papathanasiou chose to be known as. While his surname is not really on the pretty side of things, the name "Vangelis" is merely a rural version of the christian name Evangelos, which comes from the term Evangelion (the name of the gospels, which in turn means 'joyous message').

Vangelis became mostly known after his musical score for the movie Chariots of Fire, in 1981.

It is a bit more sentimental than most of his pieces, and generally has a nice harmony.

It should be a crime to combine Vangelis with 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I remember watching 1492: Conquest of Paradise after seeing Elvis Stojko's medal-winning long program (men's figure skating). Loved the music, loved the skating program, but the movie didn't make me any more sympathetic toward Columbus than I already was (which was none).

Gerard Despardieu. Yes, he's originally French. I vaguely remember reading that he took out Russian citizenship (dunno why).

Vangelis created mega great music it's without a doubt, but the Russians created equally great music as well , I'd say that even greater than Germans and Austrians I love the USSR anthem for the music for example ^^

Well Vangelis is not really a classical composer. He is more electronica-based. Russian classical music is surely magnificent (mostly thinking of Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky)...

Yanni is not classical music either (another Greek composer who made it in America, probably born there too).

The only notable Greek classical music composer i know of is Nikolaos Skalkotas.

IIRC he was pissed at the French government for raising taxes, both on income and luxury items so he announced he as leaving France for the 'freedom' of Russia. (Obviously, he said freedom without putting airquotes around it.)

Romans ? I was thinking all the Roman culture -> therefore European early culture got it all from Greek culture ? So Why Romans ?, lend me Your ears ..... ? Romans stole that culture imho Furthermore for example Russian alphabet is still based on greek aplhabet (this is just an example ) Even the word itself -> "alphabet" is derived from Greek as : alpha , beta (etc...) Im not ignorant but imho this is all irrelevant right now ! WE are talking about music ! ^^

Yes. In fact in reality everything was invented by my direct ancestors. I am linked to Byzantine Emperors and Greek Gods. A bit like the Civ5 Alexander says "i am the son of emperors and grandson of Gods"
