Well, Vangelis is the name Evangelos Papathanasiou chose to be known as. While his surname is not really on the pretty side of things, the name "Vangelis" is merely a rural version of the christian name Evangelos, which comes from the term Evangelion (the name of the gospels, which in turn means 'joyous message').
Vangelis became mostly known after his musical score for the movie Chariots of Fire, in 1981.
