vBulletin 3.0 Out?

They released a "Gamma" version of vB 3.0 recently. It looks pretty good and has lots of built in features, even though a few people said it seems to be slower than previous versions.

My guess is we should be running vB 3.0 by the end of January...

I think you said that this time last year. ;)

"Gamma" releases are very common with open source software. Alpha is normally just the core functionality and is very buggy and unstable. Beta is more stable and should have most of the functionality in it, but will still have numerous bugs. Gamma is a 'pre-release' - it usually has all functionality and is at the end of the bug fixing stage.

They released version 3.0 Release Candidate 2 recently.

I don't plan to upgrade the forum yet though. Since we've waited so long for it, we might as well wait for the final version of 3.0 (or at least a later verision with the new graphics included). :)

Someone posted his upgrade experience at vB's forum:

I thought I'd post my own thoughts here.

Just finishing up an upgrade from a seriously hacked up copy of VB 2.2.x. Our stats:

* 35,000 members
* 80 forums
* 2M posts

Backend database server is dual Athlon, 3GB RAM, and the same for the frontend web server.

It took some time (obviously) to convert the posts, etc. We had over 4GB of attachments in a table (lol) and now those are off in the filesystem with VB3. The search engine rebuild took about 3 days.

But, the good news is that it was pretty much a flawless migration. With the exception of my users *****ing because all of the old hacks aren't in yet. I took advantage of the downtime (rebuilding indexes, etc) and started incorporating all of my custom hacks and applications into VB3. By the time I went live, much was already done.

I have noticed some speed issues, but I haven't isolated it to anything yet, so it could be the network today.
Doesn't sound too bad... except the rebuilding search index part... :p

Well, we've gone without search for this long.

dose this mean we get VB3 soon then (if we dont want the search function, which I, like most, have come to think of as being non-existent anyways...)

What's the point of upgrading anyway?

What can they add that we don't already have...?
Useful additions to the arsenal of mod tools I believe...

For one, like auto-unrestricting when your restriction time is up, rather than needing an admin to manually unrestrict.

The Release Candidate versions include just the new style, but still use old graphics from vB 2.xx.

The final version will have all new graphics for buttons and icons...

Wow, does that mean we can have differ looks? Any chance that we can have an Ancient Age style CFC, middle age, etc.?

Will it fix the Administrator so he actually reads PMs?

:p

Actually maybe not. :p If he never reads them, the system propably would be better in reading them. :p

So this means the "search" button actually does something?

Yes, it's there to tease new users, and frustrate old ones.

All in all, it's doing a good job! :thumbsup::lol:
