I've never heard of Circus Charlie, but after some investigation CC resembles the game I'm after quite alot.

Dang, I had googled Circus Barney in the vain hope of finding the name of the game. It doesn't even appear in wiki's list of C64 games

Alright, close enough. It's called Kabuki Z. Originally an arcade game. Don't think you could call it a classic, but people who saw or played it would remember it, I think, since it was gory for its time (comment on Youtube agrees ). I always wanted to play it when I was very young and had no money, but now it seems like nothing.
