Viewports

I think that V should be used for removing the graphical errors if Koshling can't fix them in the DLL.

I'm making progress on that (slowly).

I would prefer C with some meta-shift just so it's analagous to the normal centering.

Alternatively (Hydro - how would you feel about this??) why don't I just change 'C' to center your view on the unit (as it does now) but ALSO center the viewport IF the unit is within N tiles (say 5) of the edge?

I was wondering if there could be some sort of quick key to "center" the view port at your current tile and/or unit? That way you would not need to open up the Military Advisor all the time when exploring.

This feature would turn viewports from awesome into super awesome.

That should be easy to add, I'll see what I can do. Do you have a recommended key sequence (ctrl-C or something since 'C' does 'normal' centering??)

I don't really care what key you use as long as it works and you tell us which key it is. :p

Ok done. The standard 'C' to center the map on the current selection will now also center the viewport if the selection would otherwise be within 5 tiles of the edge.

Nice, thanks for giving me something to look forward too! :D

I play C2C mostly now even though I have a lot of other games I like, I love C2C very addictive! I love biggest maps possible and snail or Eternity modes, sadly even with my powerful computer and 8 gb of ram I get the MAF issue! :crazyeye: Since C2C hit around version 15 I have clocked over 1000 hours lol and I have not been able to finish a single game! New versions come out that break the save and I restart to see the changes first hand! :lol:

You've just made me realize that with viewports I can ditch my large game and hop on a gigantic one :crazyeye::crazyeye::crazyeye:

But yeah, the newer versions are all save game compatible.

@Kitsune420

The built in "max compatibility" means you can still play the same game even after you update. That's how the SVN can work where we update our games everyday with new stuff and still are able to play the same game.

I think what he means is that when we release a new version that there is so much new stuff that he feels a new game is the only way to experience everything. That, and the balance changes we make version to version can often be a lot to apply to someone who hasn't updated in a month.

I like the idea of the viewports as I like playing on very big maps with many civs. I'm just not sure how to move units between viewports. I had a goody hut give me a gatherer that was not on the main viewport (the one with my capital). I selected the unit and opened the military advisor. I click on the area with my capital, went there and right clicked but nothing happened, it didn't have the path or anything indicating my unit could move there. I later tried the reverse, moving a hunter to another viewport but again, when I right clicked to move it, nothing happened.

If you leave a unit close to the edge of the Viewport, the Viewport will automatically shift, giving you more room to move the unit. The distance from the edge that a unit needs to be for this to happen is determined by the value of the VIEWPORT_FOCUS_BORDER define.

If you have the latst SVN, 'C' will now center the viewport as well as the view if the uit selected is near the edge of the veiwport. Alternatively use the military advisor to move the viewport the side of the unit you need it to be.

I intend to extand the waypoint system to allow you to order units to move to specific places off-viewport sometime, but that's a laonger term project until then you'll have to move it in stages if it's a very long move you want to set up.

I think you should make right clicking on the minimap open up an interface where you can change your viewport, name viewports, and even set hotkeys to load them.

Reda the viewport thread. The minimap can ONLY display the current viewport NOT the entire map. The military advisor IS the popup you're asking for. It is the FULL map and clicking on it recenters the viewport.

I know that. It would be a new advisor screen that is opened by right clicking the minimap.

@Koshling:

Here's a much better illustration of the rivers being improperly revealed on a viewport shift.

Can I have the associated save game and instructions to go with it please to reproduce.

Ah ok then - as you'll see in the viewport thread, that's roughly what I always intended in the long run (not launched from the military advisor though, but a separate top-level screen). However, it's quite a lot of work, and I don't plan on going back to viewports (at kleast in a major way) for a couple more release cycles, because I wan to work on the AI as higher priority.

Why is seeing the rivers bad? The tiles around them are fogged out. The start tiles for the rivers have already been reveal as well as the lower sections. Guess I don't understand this new system yet. Old ppl...... :p

Would it be hard to make that "5" variable (one more line in the parallel maps file)? I think recentering the viewport from anywhere would be useful, but other folk may not.
