Another Sandman story. I missed your "loss", if you posted it up, but I greatly enjoyed your game as the Netherlands. I hope this one will be as exciting. ^_^
That loss would be the second one in my sig. It wasn't pretty - a very hemmed in start, followed by an inevitable war and early obliteration. I have learnt to wait until the game is a bit more promising before posting, now!

nicely played so far. i think i have a solution to your backwardness in tech. in my last demigod game, i was back in tech i was in early middle and everyone was in early industrial. I then conquered madrid which had the great lib. and next thing i know i am the tech leader, i learned all the middle and early ind. thechs. since the ai leaves education till the very last you have a chance to do the same trick. it will be easier for you since you are seefaring and have the mighty amphibious berserkers. with this trick you will not have to spend huge amounts of money on techs. good luck! (hope it helps)

Welcome aboard Espirito. Thanks GR8MadMax.

That is exactly what I am planning. The Dutch have the GL at the moment. After the Roman campaign, I will target this city, and catch up in one fell swoop!

BTW, did you stretch your maps down so that they look flat?
From memory, I think there is one map that I squeezed in the sides, the rest are just cropped to fit. I think most people prefer not to have to scroll sideways to read the story.

640AD continued - Rome has almost destroyed Greece. Rome has 12 cities and Greece has been reduced to one. It is time to rush to their aid, but I fear for our friend Alexander. It seems that his time draws near. A quick check on the game status after our gains against the Dutch and the Carthaginians is in order:
SMV640ADa.jpg

SMV640ADb.jpg

We are now second in score, but we really suck in culture, even against the Romans.
SMV640ADc.jpg

Carthage - 8 cities, up visible techs(Theology, Chivalry, Gunpowder), furious with us
Rome - 12 cities, down invention, at war with us
Netherlands - 14 cities, up visible techs, furious with us
France - 11 cities, up chivalry, down invention, furious with us
Ottomans - 4 cities, up theology, chivalry, polite with us (hooray)
Greece - 1 city, even, polite
England - 11 cities, up visible techs, polite.
Scandinavia (us) - 23 cities, even, at war with Rome for the last 600 years plus.

The plan is to take the fight to Rome, since the Roman sailors are too scared to cross the sea squares separating Scandinavia from the Greeko-Roman island continent. We will use Berserks to kick off a golden age, and assuming all goes well, use the GA to conquer this island continent. Then we will reposition for a seaborne attack on Amsterdam. Due to massive cultural border expansion, this will likely have to be an ROP rape, but we are pretty much committed to the war course from here on in anyway. I will review the strategy after the capture of Amsterdam and the inevitable boost to tech that capturing the great library will bring.

Now for the Roman campaign. We have an average military compared to Rome, and only three berserks at present. Average means that the human should win, although we do have the disadvantage of having to ferry reinforcements from offshore, while all of Romes troops can access the battle from land. The Romans own the Statue of Zeus (ancient cavalry) held in the city of Athens - so little good it did the Greeks. Also it stops producing ancient cavalry when the possessing nation reaches metallurgy, so if we conquer Athens, our supply of Ancient Cavalry will dry up as soon as we take Amsterdam.

Our path to the Greeko-Roman continent ironically requires the recently liberated Holwerd's sea lane.
SMV640ADd.jpg

As you can see the path from Odense is five squares, while from Holwerd (just off to the west of the screen) there is a four tile path to the continent. Also interesting to note is the fact that of Rome's 12 cities, 9 are all coastal, and so tempting targets for our berserks. Athens, the only wonder city on the continent is not, however. The initial plan is bold, perhaps too bold. We will land a conventional force of MI, pikes and trebuchets on the hill two tiles SW of Athens, and conquer the Statue of Zeus early. Berseks will start conquering coastal towns starting around Athens. The first wave of reinforcements will start kicking Rome in the rear. ie up by Cumae, and in sort of a repeat of real history, a great sacking of Rome itself. This plan is bold, because the bulk of the Roman force is probably down near Athens finishing off the Greeks, so our initial landing force may not survive to see the fight through. Also if Rome has a bunch of galleys in the area, we may need to reconsider these plans.

650AD - preparations

660AD - Rome and Carthage sign a military alliance against France. That seems fairly pointless, because I do not think that Rome can actually reach France...

670AD - The Greeks are no more. The bully Ceasar has much to answer for.

680AD - The time draws nigh. Ottomans and Carthage sign a military alliance against France. Netherlands and England sign a military alliance against Carthage. The rest of the world is at war too. Great that will slow down their tech lead, and give me time to knock Ceasar down.

690AD - 11 galleys are now in position by Holwerd on the eve of the Roman camapaign. On board are:
10 Medieval Infantry
4 pikes
2 trebuchets
4 berserk
I would prefer more pikes. I guess we will just have to stay on the offensive. Let those cities burn.

Those Romans are screwed. :viking:

700AD - The Netherlands are moving in and out of our territory a bit much, so we buy an ROP for 19 gold to try and keep them honest. Our 11 galleys have sailed across to Cumae. I decide that I do not want to wait any longer. The various MA have upped the tech of the lagging nations, so it is time to get the show on the road. This is the first time in my civ career that I have used berserks!

Seige of Cumae - We have 4 berserks total at our disposal. Cumae is now a size 7 city defended by veteran pikes. Oh, and trebuchets. The first regiment of berserks fails. As does the second, but no trebuchet support this time. Also a wounded pike (3hp) left is showing. Would you believe we lost 4 zip! The last two defenders were both redlined, then promoted! That is for being impatient. No GA just yet. Alright, continue with original plan to assault Athens, meanwhile, go back for more berserks!

710AD - And here is the even bigger weed - I actually had a berserk left over. Against two hp defenders, he probably would have won! Two more turns until the landing by Athens!

720AD - The Dutch have completed Smiths Trading Company. The English have completed JS Bach's Cathedral.

730AD - The Romans have cleverly planted a legionary and two longbows on our hill, we will land in the desert by Athens instead.
SMV730AD.jpg

We may be in for a rough time in the IT, just here. Such is the fate of the bold!

IT - We lost 3 pikes and a couple of MI, but we cost Rome about three ancient cav, a horseman and a couple of MI - so it was about even. We are now surrounded by such a huge force that I think my expeditionary force is going to get slaughtered. There are now 16 MI on our hill. What did Patton say about plans surviving battle?

740AD - We beat a hasty retreat. The 12 surviving units leave 6 empty spots on the nine galleys. We will take the war back to Cumae, then go for reinforcements. Meanwhil, the other two galleys have brought four more berserks to the gate of Cumae. They will wait for support, this time!

750AD - The survivors, even the injured are landed just south of Cumae. We will injure the defenders then get our berserk victory (we hope).

IT - we go one for one attacking MI vs MI, and retreat a horseman.

760AD -
SMV760AD.jpg

The mini sod of Romans has two MI and a horse it it. The three trebuchets take one hp off a defending pike (both elite now, assuming there is only two). We determine that there is only two pikes, as we lose an MI, then kill a pike, leaving a four hp pike. The five available berserks will attempt to gain the city now! The first dies, but redlines the defender, and no there is another, reg pike showing. The second beserk fares a bit better
SMV760ADa.jpg

So we finally have our GA, but we lost five turns being foolishly bold! The third guy can't even hurt a redlined pike! And nor can the fourth guy! But the fifth berserk captures Cumae. Obviously these guys need more training in boot camp. I am not convinced they were real 'veterans! We clean up two MI, and otherwise retreat into Cumare for now. I will bring a settler over to abandon replace Cumae. I haven't done this yet on Sicily, but I don't really want to lose our foothold here, easily!

GPT has shot up to 111, also we now need to re-manage all our cities for best production under our GA.

Great game so far, Sandman. Let Rome burn!

i don't know why berserks did such a lame job they have 6 attack don't they? anyway, hope to hear more about your game (it has the potencial to be better than the other two). good luck

I lost two tanks to an infantrymen earlier this morning, and that was on Warlord difficulty. Weird thing was that Cavalry picked him off without a scratch.

The random odds really are random.

Sandman, i 've been meaning to ask you this but i always forget. why do you build your frobiden palace so close to your capital. i build it as far as possible to have a second core.

Only because with the various changes to handling corruption and the FP in conquests, it is my understanding that there is actually only a small benefit to build far away, and so it is more important to build quickly than to attempt to create a PTW style second core.

ohhhh. the only reason i am not leaving is becuase i am waiting for your update, you are posting today right?
