Any good recommendations? I picked up Zork1 and downloaded it with a DOS-box emulator I'm having so much fun. Also I have to get a video cable for my Sega Master System. If anyone has one buy chance, mail it to me. So if anyone remembers some cool old video games please post here so we can all relive our greatest gaming moments with the classics.

Phantasie. It's a really old, classic RPG that I liked. (I'm talking the really old cyan, red, yellow colors only version). Not sure if you can still find it on Ebay or something like that.

I had it when I was very young and my father and I would play it together. We were never very good and the battery died in it, erasing our saves and making it unplayable. A few years ago I bought the ported-to-GBA version and finally beat it! XD

Well personally I was always a big fan of Alley Cat, and I think its still quite playable today for a quick 20 minute blast. I would also recommend bubble bobble, if you have not already played it. It does all kind of depend on what you class as ‘vintage’ though. Because my ‘vintage’ will be slightly different to others.

Freaking Master of Orion. It's the classic 4x game of galactic conquest, and you get to customize and design your own ships! The economy in the classic game is pretty simple--it's population and factories, that's it. There's the mystery of the Orion race, who left behind a homeworld with tons of advanced technology, and a pretty clever diplomatic/personality engine for foreign leaders given how old the game is. Plus, if someone else wins a diplomatic victory, unlike in Civ4, you can choose not to recognize the new government and go to final war--no peace until one side is completely annihilated, last man standing wins.

I did a quick search and there's a few Let's Plays on Youtube so you can get a feel for the game:

See, I wouldnt really class this as vintage. Id class it as an old game. I think you have to go back to the 80s for something to be vintage.

Here is a youtube clip of alley cat. The person playing is pretty god awful, but it gives you the idea:

If you haven't already tried them, (a) you're probably living under a rock, and (b) you should try the original release of Populous and the 1985 Apple-II release of Oregon Trail if you can find them.

In my defense, it's a 1993 game and it runs in DOS (so I thought it would qualify as the OP talks about DOSbox, etc.).

But yeah, I smell what you're stepping in. ;)

I might be wrong. I think the word “vintage” is pretty ambiguous and is likely to mean different things to different people. I fully expect that some younger gamers would look at games like halo 1 and call that “vintage”. That is utter nonsense though in my opinion.

I guess you could look at it 2 ways: all 80s games are vintage; or all dos based games are vintage. :)

I played this one on a DOS Acer. D/Generation is an Portal-like puzzle shooter with a sick, cynical sense of humor. You're a courier who has to deliver a package to someone on another floor. Between you and him are periscope-shaped grenade launchers, bouncing balloons that absorb your body and explode, cylinder-shaped flatteners, shapeshifting androids, INFURIATING MOVING LASER WALLS...it was shocking as a kid to see someone you were trying to rescue die a horrible, messy death from one of these things.

I remember D/Generation, twas a great game. Came free with my first PC. Was so proud of my 11ish year old self when I finally completed it. Watching that video brought back memories. I was almost shouting at him how to solve the puzzles :p

Panther for the Atari800XL

My favourite game when I got my first computer back in the mid 80s. It did not even have a disk drive  All the games had to be loaded via tape - meaning 20-30 minute load times.

So once you load up a game.. You play it for a while. With panther this wasn't a problem, because it was an amazing game. I still play it from time to time. The music sends chills down my spine - so many memories... This was still back when I lived in Germany when my family's future wasn't so certain, which adds a bit more to it all
