Some textbooks have a trial version of VB6 on CD in the back.
I know specifically that the book by "Deital and Deital" has this.
It's very crippled but is a good aid in learning the language.
Give me a few days and I'll find you the exact title of the book and it's authors as well as an ISBN number. But it's time for bed and have to dig my book out of the crawl space.

Here is where you can get the VB 5 CCE Edition. http://download.microsoft.com/msdownload/sbn/vbcce/vb5ccein.exe You can do everything but compile programs.
I have full VB and could do it if you like.

Personally i wasn't a big fan of the book but other people liked it. (we used that series in college for our programming classes).
t does have lots of coding examples though and of course the trial version of VB6
