It's a semi big news story in Sweden, which may get a place in the UN Security Council 2017-18. It will be 20 years since last time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Security_Council_election,_2016

The 2016 United Nations Security Council election will be held in October 2016 during the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly, held at United Nations Headquarters in New York City. The elections are for five non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council for two-year mandates commencing on 1 January 2017. In accordance with the Security Council's rotation rules, whereby the ten non-permanent UNSC seats rotate among the various regional blocs into which UN member states traditionally divide themselves for voting and representation purposes, the five available seats are allocated as follows:

One for Africa
One for the Asia-Pacific Group[1]
One for Latin America and the Caribbean
Two for the Western European and Others Group

The five members will serve on the Security Council for the 2017–18 period.

Two seats for Western Europe. Three candidates: Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Pro's and Con's for all. Sweden will probably be the biggest pain in the butt, although you can never count out the Italians.

Which should go?

Go Netherlands!

Though if we are not to become a security council member, I prefer Italy over the Socialist Emirate of Sweden. However, I do kinda expect Sweden to become a member: Their viewpoints are rather in line with the current political fashion trends that are prevalent in the UN, whereas we and Italy would present trouble from that perspective.

If we get voted in, I wonder what it will mean for the MH17 investigation.

With Russia as a permanent member and Ukraine to be voted in 2015, I doubt the MH17 investigation will be in focus, regardless of the Netherlands being voted in.

I wonder who the Russians hate most - the Swedes or the Dutch? I think the Swedes..

I don't think Russia hates Sweden or the Netherlands. Although Sweden is rather Anti-Russian from what I've gathered. I'm kinda surprised at our current government's position on Russia. It is not that we have that much reasons to hate Russia or to like Ukraine. Russian rebels may have shot down MH17, though we did gave the Ukrainian government and Malaysia Airlines way too easy a pass.

It's not just that you've spent too much time in the Ukraine threads?

Sweden isn't anti-Russian more than there's a growing fear due to recent events. It's not unreasonable to view the current Russian government with a good amount of scepticism.

What's the purpose of this council? Doesn't seem like a particularly important institution (compared to the permanent ones at least)
Anyway my vote goes to Italy and the Netherlands. Sweden just seems too small for such a role.

I think that in this particular time it would be better if the Swedish politicians were left out, but i suppose it's not going to happen.
So there will be more trolling between US and proxies, and Russia.

Too small for this unimportant institution? I think Sweden has been voted in, I think, three times before. The Netherlands 4 and Italy 5 if I remember what I saw correctly. It's more a matter of the timing of it.
Judging by your wording, the opposite question is more appropriate - who hate Russians the most.
No one hates you, but you probably understand why you, as a nation, can't and won't be trusted as long as the current regime is in charge.

Hatred is too strong feeling. Most of Russians barely know anything about Sweden, except the fact that such country exists. But the question "who Russians hate the most" tells rather about what people who ask such questions feel about us.

My mistake. 'Hate' isn't the right word. I think there's a genuine distrust between the two governments though and from what I understand the Russian is more likely to meddle in the national media to portrait a picture that the government want. Not that Sweden is of any importance to the general Russian population.

It would be pretty impressive if the Russian gov can make the Swedish or other govs look more 1 dimensional evol on their own tv, than what those govs seem to try to do regarding the Russian one.

I think it would also be virtually impossible, by now. Can't have a number be perfectly divided by a prime if it is itself smaller than the first prime. :scan:

Actually i haven't watched greek tv for 4 years now. I don't think i'll ever watch that abomination again, either. But as crap as it is, it is unlikely more crap on all crucial aspects than the rest of the Euro state/other interest tvs..

It's all crap then, but lets agree that more independent journalists tend to disappear in Russia than in Sweden and that journalism is freer in Sweden compared to Russia. Not sure about the state of journalism in Greece.

The only seats that matter are the permanent ones.
