VQ03 - Resource Collectors

Good job getting our economy back up. I guess we can ignore Hatty for a bit to concentrate on Toku. Can we actually keep the nearest Japanese city? Oh I see gold in the screenshot so I guess we can.

I have a question on promoting catapults. I usually promote the catapults that I plan on attacking units in a city with City Raider and the catapults that does the bombarding with Barrage 1 and Accuracy 1. I'm pretty sure I've seen most of you guys promote the cats with Barrage instead of City Raider, and I'm curious why that's the case?

I do the initial promote to barrage because I'm assuming the cat will die regardless and I want it to do as much collateral damage as possible.

Depends on what is the use of the cats. For suicidal/heroic missions such as causing collateral damages to SoD, Barrage is the promotion you want (+20% collateral damage). If the cats is to pull down defenses, then you go for Accuracy. City Raider is only useful if the cats is attacking a city, and IIRC, it does not aid in causing collateral damage on other units in the city. So as far as I am concerned, for cats, its almost always Barrage or Strength promotion, occassionally the Medic.

I've noticed a catapult with at least city raider 2 has a good chance of winning unless they go up against longbows or better. Anybody else thinks like this or is my thinking off?

Edit: Just noticed GreyFox post. Ok, usually I use my catapults for attacking a city. So in that case I usually use the City Raider so the cats would actually win and not commit suicide. Are you saying its probably best to go with the Barrage promotion do more collateral damage and suicide the cat and later on build another one to replace it?

One of the cats with an Accuracy promotion would be good to be a medic maybe.

Yes, right. The cats with Med is meant to survive, so making its primary purpose to pull defense down is compatible ... with one catch: cats don't gain xp with pulling down defense, and Medic requires Combat I, so if you want a Cat with Accuracy + Medic, you need at least a 10xp cat. Only suicidal cats would have a chance of accumulating that much xp :)

Yes, my general use of cats is to suicide into stack, apart from bombarding city defense. So usually I build more than enough cats before going to war, replacing them on demand is too painfully slow.

It all depends on situation. Are your attacking forces superior (consdiering defence troops usually has a fortification or city garrison advantage)? If so, then going with city raider or even flank/retreat promotion is okay. If your attacking forces are usually getting a 50% chance, then going with Barrage might be better. It allows your other attacking forces to survive longer. Sacrificing one unit's chances of surviving for the chances of more units is always a bargain, IMHO :)

Ok, I see what you mean. Sorry about going off topic. I was just curious whether I was missing something or not.

Yeah I generally use cats for either bombarding or for causing collateral damage ,so I always give that barrage promotion first. If they survive and reach the next level, then I'll give either accuracy or barrage 2, or occasionally extra first strike chance. Maybe I'll try city raider for the second one, next time.

The next player is going to have to do some clever maneuvering to fend off the Japanese, I think. I can see losing and having to re-take Pi-Ram. Good luck! If we came out of it with one of their cities, that would be a great victory!

Yup, I'm up... Sorry I haven't posted a got-it. I am in the process of upgrading my gaming PC, and haven't gotten it to the point of getting CIV running. I can (and will) play my turns on my laptop later today.

Well, if I must explain myself... I have not received the new CPU for the rig... so that's a little higher on the prioirty list... :)

Ok, I played my turns... and ugly turned uglier!

Sorry there's no autolog, I forgot I did not have it loaded on my laptop. It would have been a very depressing read anyways.

There are really no highlights here... so I guess the lowlights are:

Turn 2: Pi-Ramys is overrun by Japanese. Tokagowa has some nasty stacks... hopefully we can still hold Heliopolis!

Try as I might, we can't get anyone to join us in the fight. The option is open for Washington and Mansa, but we have nothing to trade them...

Feudalism comes in, and I set a beeline to Machinery. We need some macemen! I start Longbows in several cities.

Turn 4: Hatty declares on us  Nothing like a good 'ol AI dogpile! crapola!

Turn 10: Hatty takes back Memphis. Our resolve in Heliopolis is broken, and it too is lost, to Japan. Despite much whipping of LBs, Toka has too many horse archers and swords. We were getting a decent kill ratio, but he just has too many units... stacks of 8-10 in several places.

Well, GreyFox, I hope you have much better luck defending the homeland! We are in serious trouble!!! Neither Toka nor Hatty will talk...

The save:

Geez ... I am UP on both VQ SG and both we are at the losing side of the war???  How did this happen? I seriously thought things were going pretty well in this SG (at least).

Can I invoke my autoskip???

Ok, can play both SG tomrrow ... but if next player can grab it before I do, go ahead.

So where did we go wrong in this game?

Maybe leaving the cities adjacent to Japan too lightly defended, an irresistable target for Toku?

Falling too far behind in commerce/tech?

Can we make a comeback?

 Wow! I did not see this coming. I thought we were doing alright, just a little behind in tech.

This is kind of early in the game to be on survival mode. Ouch.

The Report

I really don't know how to to report this using my usual reporting style ... so I am not going to try.

Pre-Turn: Turn 200 (1400 AD)

- First off, I turned research all the way to 0. We need money for upgrading. It might turned out to be a :smoke: on hindsight. Maybe we do need the research to get to better units, but ... I will explain myself later. The explanation is sort of a spoiler.

- Next, I revolted to Police State, Vassalage, and Thoecracy. The last two is for obvious reasons (we have no Nationhood, else I would have repelled the Japs by the 3rd turn! :(). Police State is not for war weariness, but actually for the +25% military production.

- Then I upgarded one warrior to spear.

- Also changed Areba which is trying to build the Library to Spear. The forces at Areba all have unpromoted experiences, I use them all up.

- Also MM'ed all cities to produce maximum :hammers: regardless of starvation. Desperate times require desperate measures ...

Old lady, you must be joking!!!!

1st and 2nd Turn: Turn 201 - 202 (1410 1420 AD)

- Quiet turns, got pillage a lot, and the Japs and Egypt forces starts approaching Persepolis and Areba/Susa respectively.

- Did I say quiet?? Too soon!!!

IBT: War Trumpet Blows!!!

Turn 203 (1430 AD)

- And then the actions begin ...

- Persepolis, Passagadae and Susa all finishes their Longbowmen, and all three got promoted to Garrison II.

- Saw a Horse Archer passed by Susa, heading towards our southern copper. :nono:, you can;t pillage that.... thus:
Spearman loses to: Egyptian Horse Archer (0.72/6) <- it was a no xp warrior upgraded spear against a Combat II HA, so pretty good results actually
Longbowman defeats (6.00/6): Egyptian Horse Archer

IBT: The attack on Persepolis begins ...
Longbowman defeats (4.32/6): Japanese Horse Archer
Longbowman defeats (5.22/6): Japanese Horse Archer
Longbowman defeats (2.34/6): Japanese Longbowman
Longbowman defeats (2.16/6): Japanese Axeman
Swordsman defeats (0.60/6): Japanese Axeman
War Elephant defeats (6.80/8): Japanese Axeman
War Elephant defeats (4.40/8): Japanese Axeman
Longbowman defeats (1.68/6): Japanese Spearman
Longbowman defeats (0.84/6): Japanese Spearman
Ha, Toku 0 - VQ3 9

And then things turn really ugly ...

IBT: War Trumpet Blows Again!!!

When I start playing, I was confident of repelling both the Yellow and Red devils by the end of my turn sets, even when the Green devil appeared I was thinking its okay, they are relatively far away ... but not when the Blue devil join in the fun too!

It was now then I started to realize the seriousness and groominess of the impending doom... losing this SG (consequetively after VQ02) is now becoming a real certainty ...
