VQ05 - The Conquistadors

Or since its not part of the actual continent does it count as part of the "new world"?

Ok, I have mulled this over... and I am going to say that the island that Mansa settled is *not* a part of the new world. Our mission is to conquer the continents that have been barb-infested, and that island is not a part of those continents.

We don't have to attack Mansa yet... if me moves on to the main barb continents... then we will.

My guess is that PA is not enabled, but I don't know for sure.

PA is not enabled. I didn't enable it 'cause I thought if we settled into a PA... and that AI put a city in the new world... that would create a Paradox that would tear apart of the fabric of time! (OK, maybe not... but it would go agains the variant)

With that being said... We need to pump out settlers like crazy to keep Mansa off the big islands. Coastal settlements will be huge.

I'd suggest moving the southern barb (conquered) city off courthose and to a settler. Should be faster then waiting for a settler to voyage across the ocean. Our economy is going to hate us, but we have to settler spew, eliminating any nook for the other AIs to settle in.

Maquis, let me know if you want to swap.

Didn't see that earlier. I'll take a swap. I have some time tonight to play, and was thinking of trying to finish GOTM6 (would be the first I ever complete & submit!) But I'd rather play these. :D

Bobrath, my bad on the go-to orders. I have a really bad memory and forget about stuff like that sometimes. I'll try to remeber to cancel all go-to orders next time.

np, as any will tell you from the VQ group. Its my one pet peeve that I get over real quick.

Maquis, did you play last night? Should I wait on a report before playing my turns later?

Yes, I did play... The report is not much... a few mild skirmishes with the barbs, and I have set up a couple of the barb cities to be taken soon.

There are lots of boats still ferrying units back and forth. I *tried* not to leave anything on gotos!!

There are some workers on boats heading to the new world. There's nothing left to do on the mainland, at least not until RRing. We need to hook up some of the resources in our new cities to get them growing.

I did happen to see Mansa ferrying a settler over to the new world. Have to see where he plops down. We just might be forced to attck him after all!

Let's stick to the rule that the 2 main continents of the new world are ours. If Mansa goes on another isle he is fine...

Not too much else to report. Hopefully I did not leave the troops too spread out again for you ChrTh :)

Partial report (played a little at lunch):
Turn 0 -- 1820 AD

:hmm: Seems like there's plenty for me to do this turn.

At Tartar I suicide a cat and kill two longbows, leaving just a mace to eliminate next turn.

At Vandal I move the Conquistadors so that they won't have to attack across the river.

At Carib I can't do anything ... yet.

We're getting killed with the emancipation penalty, I raise culture to 20%.

Turn 1 -- 1822 AD

There's a longbow outside Numidian. I kill it with the Conquistador.

At Tartar: Conquistador beats Mace, Tartar is ours.

At Vandal: Conquistador beats Longbow. Conquistador loses to Longbow  Conquistador defeats Mace. Mace and wounded Longbow remain.

Turn 2 -- 1824 AD

Persepolis: Grocer > Market
Santiago: Theater > Barracks

At Vandal: Conquistador loses to Longbow  Conquistador defeats Mace. Musket defeats Longbow. Vandal is ours.

To be continued!

Turn 0 -- 1880 AD

Alright, look like my goal this turn is to finish what I started with GW. I actually might take advantage of the lull and save the attack on Hattie for someone else...

Turn 3 -- 1886 AD

Bye bye George ...

Ok, I think I'll attack Hattie in 2 turns.

Turn 4 -- 1888 AD

Eh, we're ready. I declare War on Hattie. Mansa declares on me. I work East to West.

Turn 2 -- 1824 AD (continued)

:coffee:

Turn 3 -- 1826 AD

Biology comes in. Start Steam Power (due in 9).

Cordoba: Hindu Mandir > Settler
New Nara: Lighthouse > Granary

I trade Biology to Mansa for Democracy, 10 gold, and his WM. I probably could've gotten Steam Power, but I really want to Emancipate our people (so I can drop culture down again).

Interesting inter-turn: JC captured Shanghai!

Persepolis is now confused.

And we get a Great Scientist. I build the Academy in Barcelona. Doing so shaves a turn off of Communism.

Ok, we're emancipated. I can drop culture to 10% and raise science to 60%. I decide to go for Communism instead. A couple reasons: 1, Mansa doesn't have it and we may be able to trade it to him. 2, it'll get us State Property.

:hmm: I may have screwed up with where I dropped the Settler ... guess I'm to find out.

Turn 4 -- 1828 AD

Madrid: Oxford University > Cavalry

:wallbash: Mansa is going to beat us to a good spot in the New World. Totally my mistake for not getting our settler there first :smoke:

Assault on Carib:
Grenadier defeats Longbow.
Conquistador defeats Longbow.
Mace loses to Mace.
Sword defeats Mace, Carib is captured. 2 workers are now ours. That's the last barbarian city on the southern continent.

Whoops, time to go make dinner ... to be continued!

Turn 4 -- 1828 AD (continued)

JC has a HUGE stack in Shanghai.

Turn 5 -- 1830 AD

Barb Mace attacks Vandal, defeated by Rifle.

Tartar already has a courthouse! Starts Barracks.

Mansa put Awlil where I thought he would. Well, War is inevitable.

:coffee:

Turn 6 -- 1832 AD

JC demands I cancel deals with Qin. I can't do it. I trade him Clams because he's now annoyed.

Qin has Infantry

Turn 7 -- 1834 AD

Our Cavalry kills a Barb Longbow and a Mace before succumbing to another Longbow

Barcelona: Market > Rifle
Cordoba: Settler > Cavalry
Pasargadae: Observatory > Grenadier
Susa: Bank > Cavalry

Circassian has converted to Hinduism.

Salamanca is built. Starts Courthouse.

Turn 8 -- 1836 AD

Persepolis: Market > Rifle
Santiago: Barracks > Cannon

Barbs now have Grenadiers

Turn 9 -- 1838 AD

Qin wants us to declare on JC ... umm, have you seen the stack they have in Shanghai?!?

Madrid: Cavalry > Rifle
Toledo: Cavalry > Harbor
Vandal starts Courthouse
Carib starts a Granary

Turn 10 -- 1840 AD

Cannon kills a Barb Longbowman (he attacked me).

Communism comes in. I start Corporation due in 2. I see if I can swap for anything with Mansa, but the only thing he'll trade is Corporation. Next player can trade for it if they want.

I don't revolt to State Property because I wanted the team to discuss all Civics choices. But we should do State Property.

Cannon attacks Warrior guarding a hut, 2 more warriors pop out. I think the Cannon will survive ...

Ok, the Southern continent looks clear of Barbs. Northern continent looks like it only has one city left, and it wasted a lot of it troops attacking our approaching troops. That said, I think I've done a lousy job of troop arrangement on both landmasses, hopefully the next player can rectify.

Bobrath will be happy to know there's a galleon with a settler heading to the new world...probably should settle near Awlil. I haven't seen anyone else try to settle the New World (Qin and JC too distracted fighting each other?)

We still have half the power of Qin and JC. I know we're trying to focus on the variant, but I recommend military builds. We need to get Assembly Line so that we can have Infantry. We probably would be better off trading Communism for Corporation and start the Steam Power research.

Don't forget to revolt to State Property!

ChrTh - Just Played

There are peaceful ways to comply to our variant: such as trading cities, or forcing a cultural flip.

Grenadiers barbs ... interesting ... out conquistador is facing the prospect of being obslete ...

Having said all that, I can't play today. Earliest I can get to it is tomorrow night (that is 36 hrs away). So if zach is not otherwise busy swimming somwhere, you are most welcomed to take it.
