I mentioned this in the thread on remaking old games, but thought it deserved a thread of its own.

Are there any decent strategic historical wargames around for PC? By that I don't mean RTS or even TBS games set in a historical setting, but the old-fashioned table top based game where you play Rommel or Napoleon and have the forces he had historically and have to achieve the same or similar goals. My main area of interest is WW2, but would be interested in most periods.

Ditto -- I still play Panzer & Allied General as well

I know what he's talking about, I used to love those games the "general" series were OK but they weren't realistic, I used to play an Avalon Hill Board game with my Brother in law called "Russian Front" and I could not believe how realistic it was.

For sheer fun, try AH Titan -- the monster slugathon. For a WW II feel, Panzerblitz has a great feel -- the guns have to shoot then move; Infantry can move then shoot, but only a hex away as a close assault (a strong ploy with this unit). Tanks can move then shoot in open territory as an overrun -- of course this leaves them open on the next turn.

Panzerblitz (Pz) was a revolution -- a step up in the complexity, but worth it for hard core gamers. Some of my D&D buddies opted to buy a few sets of Pz rather than investing a few hundred $$ in miniatures. It wouldn’t surprise me if Pz & D&D led to the resurgence of miniatures back a while ago. :sniper:

I play this game all the time and love it. good interface.

Old-n-Slow I have actually played PB with Miniatures...

It was alot of fun, but really hurt the knees. :)

On Topic: The "General" series of games are pretty good in terms of fun and historical value. I STILL search for a substitute for AH games though, and might be looking for MSN addresses after the beginning of the year to get my fix! :)

Thanks for the responses guys (and gals if appropriate).

Is Gettysburg still available? And what are these General games? Who makes them, where can I get them?

Old'n'Slow - I've got Titan as a boardgame and if ever there is a game that would benefit from computerisation then that is it :) I also have Pz, though I only played it a bit as a teenager and haven't been able to get any table top wargaming opponents since. I believe it is still somewhere in my parent's loft!

The General series (5 star series) is made by SSI (Strategic Simulations Inc.). The latest part is distributed by UBIsoft.

Go here: http://www.panzergeneral.com/

You could look here for more info on the older games:
http://www.wargamer.com/5star/

Or other fansites. SSI has been purchased by UBIsoft and the old games are not supported anymore.
:D

Panzer General 2 had Sherman tanks really powerful, but the Germans and Russians had weak little things.

I like People's General because it handles air power very well. Yes, the American tanks are very, very powerful. But we need to get used to that by now. ;)

Yes, I am American, but I didn't expect the Russian tanks to be so weak. I think the Russians have always had the best tanks. The Chinese have very good infantry because of their numbers advantage, but I think the whole game is very balanced as a whole, except some artillery has way too much range. Why don't people like People's General as much as they love Panzer General? I think it's better, and I have both.

no one play here PBEM diplomacy?
this is not that realsitic, but it closs (how you write near?)

There is a whole forum for Dippy, right above this one! :crazyeye:

Has anyone here played any of the Battleground games put out by Talonsoft? I have a terrible addiction to those games.
