Why? Besides aesthetics...

Like I used to tell my parents: I do have everything organized on my biggest shelf- my floor!

Well for a couple reasons...... first of all I am an old timer when it comes to puters and some of these are habits from back in the DOS days... Like not saving things in the ROOT folder as you could only have so many in there. And others are habits from being in Networking like these two.....

Why is it bad to have a large user profile?

A large user profile results in slow logon and logoff times. Because the profile is copied when you logon and logoff, you have to wait however long it takes for that copy to complete before you can do anything. If profiles get larger
and larger, people can find themselves waiting several minutes just to logon.

Why shouldn't I save files to my desktop?

Although it is convenient to have files on your desktop, especially those that you use often, saving files here is how most people wind up with large profiles. Always store files that you need to keep in your network folder or M: drive. If you want easy access to files form your Desktop, create shortcuts instead. Shortcuts are very small and let you quickly open documents.

Now even though you might not be using a network profile at home you still do have a local profile which the computer as to load during boot up so saving lots of files and large folders to the desk top can cause a serious slow down in loading and shutting down time.

Also in my experience files saved on the desktop become corrupt more frequently than if not and I found this out on the web to back me up......

Don't save files to your desktop, especially on a PC.

The desktop is handy, but the operating system doesn't always maintain it in a predictable and safe way. It's safer if you create folders on normal disks (for instance, in your windows home directory), and then put shortcuts to those folders on your desktop. This gives you the convenience of the desktop without the hazards of actually storing files there.

Anyways I guess it boils down to old habits that die hard as I tend to only use Windows Explorer for navigating and I keep all my folders in List View.

Yeah JP, clean up your desktop! that's probably the reason you forgot to mention the two possible norse units and the dwarf in post 2. The dwarf will be bearded soon btw as soon seZereth gave the bearded one I sent him a little fine tuning.:D

I like the second Tilean flag.

Sorry, I haven't put them in yet, since I haven't made a Norse Civ yet, but I will soon! Then I'll put up more pics

i updated my post #5 with a "to do" list in no special order and very vague, have to see about it.
Perhaps i will have some time tomorrow to do some skinning.

i managed to get the maceman functioning as spear / pikeman and so i got one more model that is good for reskinning!
For this topic look here and tell me if u discover some more switches that work/dont work

we could actually do a "promotion" /upgrade loop for the norse were bear men... its relativvely simple. oh and well, we should change our interface like they did in warhammer 40k mod !!!! look there and then think about it. perhaps some thing with ancient scrolls (zerrissene papier schriftrollen mit brandlöchern) or so...

Two whole pages in a single day! you guys are on fire.
Anyway what was that equipment idea (light armour, heavy armour) that you were talking about J? The best wya to implement it, i think, is to have extra buildings in cities, like sword makers or armourers that give certain promotions to units built in that city. That would really incourage city specialisation as well as having to choose a particular field (cavalry, melee) in which to make your army stronger.

I was thinking, with your upgrade mod (certain upgrades for certain units depending on research, right?) We could do like an "Elven Bows" upgrade that would give longbowmen +20% combat or something, but no other units, and if they upgrade to Handgunners, they loose that promotion. So basically, your upgrade thing that you were describing to me, but with different names.

@Sez I love the maceman as Spearman, etc. If we get a longer skirt and a good shield, they can be high/dark elf spearmen... (I don't think that Warhammer elves really need special ear bits, skinning is fine, like you said.)
How 'bout some goblins, now that you have the ears...

I know it seems like I'm all over the place, but right now it doesn't really matter since the next civ (after Tilea) won't be released for a while, I'm focusing on gameplay and technology and spells and other fun stuff ;). Diversity of units would be nice in the mean time. (Does that make sense? I was working on it so late last night I only got 3 hours of sleep...)

@Nightravn well, since I never turn off my computer, and it's only mine, logging in isn't a problem ;) But I know, for nothing else it's hard to find stuff. One day I will organize...

Does anyone want to work on the interface, like in 40K? I don't think I have the time (or talent) but if someone else wants to, they are welcome to it.

nice to see your progress (esp. how fast it can go)

Just a few suggestions and questions (I hope you dont mind ;) )

Are there plans for promotions compareable to unit upgrades according to Tabletop Rules ?
Im thinking about Heavy Armor, Shields, Banners, Magic Banners, 2hand weapons and many more
(I could offer myself to help with them ... make lists about which promotion makes sense and "translate" them into game mechanics and whatever is needed)

Another thing is, in the Tabletop Game, Charakters play a importand role.
A Idea could be having them as Units and have the Magic Items they can use (Promotions as Magic Items).
For example a Magic Armor that gives a 1+ Armor (could have the name of the fitting Armor from the Army Book of that faction) increase certain values ingame.

Just a few suggestions (I know its very far to go still)

contact me, If I can help

DLed your Mod yesterday evening - already looks very interesting, but still a bit unfinished for much playtesting (not a criticism, I understand it's still in Alpha-stage).

Just wanted to give you some feedback, so you'll know your efforts are appreciated and your mod is being eagerly awaited... :goodjob:

Hi holodmer, i think it is a very good idea to have someone who contributes that kind of stuff, (translating rules into the game) cause i want to have some feel of the tabletop in the game too, so the races shuld behave different and should have a certain range of units, alsmost aquivalent to the game.
About Armor upgrades and so on, i think i could do at a later stage more versions of same unit, so giving them an extra shield or skinning them an heavy armor, so the actual upgrades will be visible.
Magic Items i want to be shown as actaul 3d units made with the nifviewer, i think we can get the magic books from the Christian missionary and the weapons from all the units. and they wll be skinned specialy and will be in the stack, giving promotion to the unit which carries it. so u can switch it between units or get a magic item from a defeated opponent!

So if u want you could contribute rules, ideas and what i would like to see some nice civpedia entries, because i want everyone to get familiar with the universe he plays in. but talk to J ;)

@Lord Olleus: nice to see you are progressing, good to have you at our side!

I will do some empire units today!

Ok guys after looking at a couple other reference maps I am not happy with the World Edge Mountains and the other mountains in the Old World. I think they need to be moved to the east more. If anyone has some other reference maps I could use please post them so I can DL and use. JP any word on that reference map you were getting for me? We definitely need something that shows plains, grasslands, desert area and also things like forest, jungles and resources.

@Nightravn He said he would get me the map, but that was a coupla days ago... I'll PM him again to see if he forgot...

@Holodmer:
I do think that would be useful, a list of various effects in WH and what they should do in game, because there obviously isn't a direct correlation (I kinda wish Attack and Defense were 2 seperate stats again, like Civ3) I have some ideas of my own, but I can always use more!

I'm also developing a magic items system that I think will impress everyone, however it's top secret for now. I don't want Kael stealing it until I've released it ;)

@Dragonlord:
I'm glad you liked it :). Soon there will be another release that will be much much better. Keep on playing each version!

Come on J you can tell me about your magic weapons. I wont tell anyone ;)
Besides I might be able to help you.
I already told you remember? ;) Actually I might need your help, I think I've got the concepts down and the right functions, but something's not working in my code. I'll PM you later (after calc test :vomit:) with my code, see if you can help. (If you can't tell by some of my posts I'm hating python...I can adapt other's code easily, but making my own doesn't seem to be working...stupid syntax!)

Ploe: Could you make the images in the zip that's attached into buttons? I need the same pics both for the tech tree and units, I can't remember if they are supposed to be different sizes or not.

Nearly there folks! I got alot done last night. If my girlfriend allows me enough time :whipped: I think I'll be able to release a bug testing version this weekend, then public next week.

Oh yeah i remember. How about these magical items randomly created in cities with a lot of GPP?

Hmm I'd like to have a public discussion about that, I like the idea, but once we've gotten it to work :D
