Warlords Patch 2.08 Released!

What is PBEM?
What is "vanilla" Civilization? (I saw this "vanilla" word - too - many times...)
PBEM is an acronym for "Play By E-Mail."

"Vanilla Civilization" refers to Civilization IV without any mods or expansion packs.

The Pre-patch PBEM games DO work with the Patch. The Game admin just has to clear the Admin password while under the non-patched version. Then that save gets loaded into the Patch version.
Thanks, HitAnyKey; I will try this on the next turn cycle of each of my affected games. If it works, then Firaxis still gets docked points for failing to communicate this (but not as many as they will be if it doesn't work).

This was actually communicated to the community by Alexman, a Firaxian:

As with previous Civ4 patches, you can load pre-patch saves unless you have either clicked the "Lock modified assets" option, or you have an admin password.

If you have an admin password, you are prevented from loading save files with a different checksum than the python and XML files on your computer. This is by design (to prevent cheating). In this case you just need to clear that password before upgrading, and you will be able to load the save. You can then re-enter the admin password.

As for barbarian spearmen and galleys, it's true that it didn't make it into the patch. Sorry.

Quick question about patching PBEM games: I'm currently in a Warlords PBEM, and I just want to ensure that as long as everyone patches, we will still continue on with our existing game. Is this true, or should we hold off? Holding off means avoiding patches for a year -- dang these PBEM games are long... :)

Assuming this is correct, I imagine the correct order to patch is to send a turn on, /then/ patch, then by the time it gets back around, everyone's at the same level (rather than everyone patch at once).

Official Firaxis documentation on this would be appreciated, by the way. Surely we're not the only ones masochistic enough to PBEM.

Edit: I suppose I should read the entire thread before posting... okay, just so I'm clear on the process:

  1. Admin loads the game, then clears the password.
  2. Player 2 patches, loads the game, saves.
  3. Players 3 through N repeat step 2.
  4. Admin patches, loads the game, reinstates the password.

Right? I just want to make sure I don't nuke my game, since we have quite a bit of time invested. The above assumes an optional step 2a of "Player 2 through N decide not to cheat now that the admin password is missing."

(As an engineering aside, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard for the patching process to notice that a PBEM game is in progress by looking at the PBEM save dir and comparing file save dates, and warn the user of the proper process.)

So... where's the list of what's actually been changed in the patch?

Look at the README.HTM that was installed with the patch.....

Although alexman says it isn't 100% correct.....

Yes, this is correct. Those supposedly, the Admin should be able to load the game in pre-patch. Then clear the password. Then save the game (before ending his turn). Then load the game post-patch and put the admin password back. Then end his turn and send it on to the next player to load into their patched game. Though as I havn't had a chance to try this yet, I can't confirm it.

Thank you heihojin for your patient answer to PBEM, and vanilla... but I guess that playing by email requires a lot of patience...

Sorry to say we're back to the major bug problems with this game.

I had the 'vanilla' version of CivIV, got the Warlords expansion pack for the game, and was spending weeks happily playing CivIV Warlords with no mods or additions made by third parties installed. Then I thought I'd check for updates via the Advanced options. Downloaded the 2.08 patch and, what do you know, all I get now when I try to run the game:

'This application has failed to start because BOOST_PYTHON-VC71-MT-1_32.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.'

Arrrrh!!

What are these guys at Firaxis/2K doing?

Works fine for me. I did get a 'you don't have the cd inserted' message when i first patched, but then I reinstalled everything and it works like a charm now. Never been better.

Hi bennos76 :)

This is weird. I did a search for the driver that Warlords couldn't locate (via the shortcut icon on my desktop), and it was found in the following directory:

C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Warlords.

However the Warlords shortcut icon on my desktop (which automatically appeared after the game updated to the 208 patch) points to this path:

C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 - Warlords\Civ4Warlords.exe.

There are therefore two Warlords directories. I copied the boost_python-vc71-mt-1_32.dll file from the ... 4\Warlords to the ... 4 - Warlords directory and the next message I got when I clicked on the desktop icon was this:

"This application has failed to start because python24.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.'

And guess what, the python24.dll is located in the ...4\Warlords directory.

So obviously during the 208 patch installation procedure, the ... 4 - Warlords directory has been created, minus a lot of the necessary files, as located in the ...4\Warlords directory.

All I've got in the ... 4 - Warlords directory are the following:
Assets directory and subfolders/files
CvGameCoreDLL directory and subfolders/files
Mods directory and subfolders/files
PublicMaps and file
Shaders - empty folder
Civ4Warlords.exe file (version 2.0.8.0) - the Civ4Warlords.exe file in the ...4\Warlords directory is, as you'd expect, version 2.0.0.0.
Civ4Warlords_PitBoss.exe file (version 2.0.8.0 - ditto 2.0.0.0 version in the other Warlords folder).

If I click on the Civ4Warlords.exe icon in the ...4\Warlords directory I can run the CivIV Warlords game. But, of course, it is minus the latest update as its the 2.0.0.0 version. So if I check for updates, the game again tells me that the 208 update is available. If I try to do the update for the game again, the installation procedure is probably going to create another folder and stick all the subdirectories and files in there.

So what do I do to get the update to install to the correct directory?

And, second question, how do I go about uninstalling the 208 patch, because the way things are configured, Windows XP cannot uninstall Warlords via its Add Remove Programs facility, and, of course, there is no uninstall icon associated with this game? (Can't uninstall using the setup icon on the DVD because that recognises the 208 version is later than the version setup on the DVD can install, and it refuses to uninstall as a consequence).

HELP!

Something must really be messed up if Add/Remove Programs won't uninstall Warlords.

Sounds like you need to manually wipe all instances of Civ and reinstall.

I run the patch and it says I don't have a copy of Warlords! WTH!? Of course I do! Anybody else having this problem?

I have the same problem. I downloaded the patch through the game.

My version is a D2D version, would that have anything to do with it?

These are diff outputs for all the XML and Python files that changed with the 2.08 patch. Good for updating mods...

View attachment w208XMLdiffs.txt
View attachment w208Pythondiffs.txt

EXAMPLE:
Checking Mods/EEECiv4-Downloads/vW100files/XML/Buildings/CIV4BuildingInfos.xml Assets/XML/Buildings/CIV4BuildingInfos.xml
506c506
< <ObsoleteTech>NONE</ObsoleteTech>
---
> <ObsoleteTech>TECH_RIFLING</ObsoleteTech>

We are diffing the old Warlords 1.0 vs the new 2.08. So in CIV4BuildingInfos.xml, line 506 in the old file had 'NONE' and line 506 in the new file has 'TECH_RIFLING'. In other words '<' lines are the old text and '>' lines are the new text.

They have given Expansive cheaper workers which may make them be able to build settlers faster than Imperialisitic - which neutralises Imperialisitc's advantage; they have given Creative cheap Libraries and given Organised cheap Factories (which nearly makes them as close to being industrious as industrious) BUT they didn't give Aggressive cheaper Stables!

Argh! Why? Aggressive has really lost its edge now with the existance of the Charismatic trait and Great Generals. Now with the other traits being beefed up, Aggressive slides down even further. If you are playing a land map (ie, Lakes), then the Barracks is the only building that Aggressive can build cheaply (as the Dry Dock is useless on land maps).... and it doesn't take much now with the use of GG's to eliminate the effectiveness of Aggressive's Combat I bonus. Why didn't Firaxis see that?

Yes!! D2D is NOT compatible with the public patch!!!

The patch available on Firaxis, Strategy Informer, GamersHell, etc, will NOT work for Direct2Drive installations!

Do NOT use the internal updating system from within Warlord!!! The downloading system integrated in the game does not know it is a D2D version, and will attempt to download the general patch instead of the "digital copy" patch...

Installing a patch not designed for the downloaded version of Civ4/Warlord can even crash your installation, and you might have to re-install the game from your Direct2Drive copy for reinstalling the right DLLs and so on...

Go to: http://www.direct2drive.com/patches/index.aspx

And download where it says (be sure you have no pop-up killers): 10/31/2006 Civilization IV Warlords v2.08 Patch [Digital Distribution]

This patch will be smaller than the public one.
