Agreed, but I disagree about the Kill Bill movies. IMO they were even better than Pulp Fiction.

I liked them too, but then again, I liked Independence Day as well, so my opinions about movies is what some people charitably call 'non-mainstream'.

Hey, in my book, being non mainstream is a good thing. Independence Day was an ok movie, but it cant be compared to Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill. Sort of like comparing a great cheesecake, with a great steak.

Will Smith Independence Day? Made enough money for me to think it was 'mainstream'.

What Ram said. Although I liked Reservoir Dogs and The Usual Suspects better, to pick a couple of other movies from about the same time.

As for not original, I have Kung Fu Hustle in my DVD player at the moment. Not too much original stuff in there, all the scenes are 'basically ripoffs' of all sorts of other stuff, but it's still one of the best movies I saw last year.

And as for comic books not having any depth, please go and read or watch Sin City, Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics, etc, and then go and watch something like Mission Impossible. Then come back and tell us which one has characters about as deep as a toddler's wading pool.

I think it was a good movie. Great dialog, great art, cool scenes, memorable moments: what could you ask for more?
Wet T-shirts?

 Good one there.

I'm interested in the last bit of my previous post, about showing the film to a 50s and 60s audience. I think they would be horrified and quite perplexed by it, for the reasons I mentioned. I don't think you could say the same about say "Gone With the Wind", which has a timeless appeal.

So, if this is true, does this mean that Pulp Fiction is not really that great? It is, after all, a load of pastiche specifically designed to tickle our particular fancies in this day and age, having consumed the media and arts that we have. Thoughts?

Good luck trying to quantify greatness. How do audiences from a different culture like Gone with the Wind? Say 1950s Russia or China? Same timeless appeal for them, or is gone with the Wind only considered great by western culture, even if it's managed to span a couple of generations of that culture? Personally, gone with the Wind didn't do that much for me, although it's been a long time since I've seen it.

Great movie! It rates in my top 10 movies of all time. The dialogue is funny and the scene mixing is clever. That's the first movie John Travolta had to dance in since Saturday Night Fever. What a great comeback.

I personally think Tarantino is the most overrated director of all time (that I've seen). Curious as to other people's opinions. :)

I think Tarantino's over-rated, simply because he lacks a significant body of work. Regardless, PF is an incredibly great movie.

"English, mother f***er, do you speak it?"

In retrospect, I could've done w/out Travolta's career being "revived", but it made a big star of Samuel L. Jackson, so I guess its a wash. :)

Mods, if you don't mind, could you add a "Haven't seen it" option.

Mods never listen to that crap anyway...

Oh and it's a good movie the first time you see it.

I've seen it about 50 times (not kidding) and it just sucks worse and worse every time you watch it.

Er... then why did you watch it 50 times?
