We Need an Atheist Symbol!

How do cells show that God doesnt exist? Just curious.

It's complicated...stem cell issue probably?
yes i am still enraged at religious interference in stem cell research

My opinion, your opinion...or is that childish mockery?

The atheist symbol should be Patrick Swayze blasting the shiznit out of a Mexican paratrooper.

Since i'm going to be an atheist, i suggest for a symbol a representation of a cell. It's scientific, materialist, and shows that god doesn't exist, but we do. Or something scientific, such as an atom. Or a brain.
someone here should calm down

Stem cells are a natural thing that bodies use to repair themselves. The fact that stem cells exist does not negate the existance of God.

Are you implying that you want to imprison atheists?. Just wondering thats all.

I don't think we need an atheist symbol.

Personally, even though i'm more of an agnostic, i'm a atheistpologist (sp? :D) and I really wouldn't want to flaunt my atheism/agnosticism around by wearing some sort of symbol declaring myself atheist. It would be like wearing a bright red shirt and strolling into the bullfight arena.

Its just one of those things I don't understand. If it isn't actually commanded by the religion, why openly wear something that declares your faith? I mean, I don't go wearing a Finnish flag on my back/arm/head/whatever everyday, not at home, nor when I'm out of the country... But I guess I've always been somewhat a private person..

Relax. It's just a play on words. :)

Anyway, I would have made up a clever acronym for NIETZSCHE, but I'm not that clever.

Sagan is way cooler anyways. Sagan was among the coolest dudes on the planet!

Out of all the symbols on that page, this one looks the most promising.

It does, but I don't think many people would get that it's the empty set, and thus is meant to say "we don't have a symbol", so I vote we don't have a symbol instead. Besides, once we introduce symbols, we get into the silly notion of different atheist factions represented by different symbols.

Hey, just because athiests aren't a religion doesn't mean they can't have a symbol. Commy-nism isn't a religion and they have symbols.

Yeah, but atheism is a lack of something. Is the west founded on specific ideas or anti-ideas? Anti-communism did not win the cold war, Capitalism did.

The atheists who specifically believe that there are no Gods and have set up specific rituals to celebrate this fact, can have a symbol. The rest of us don't deserve one ;)

Whatever happened to respecting other people's faith even if they believe in a flying pink elephant?

Hey now, you're taking it a bit too far. People who believe in flying pink elephants should all die horrible deaths.

how about the atheist symbol is a picture of a empty souless guy whos afraid of god and thinks that he knows everything.

The pope as a symbol for atheism? Please...

I did some careful consideration on those views and I have found myself in the wrong on those issues.

Perhaps a thread where you update your views as they change might be a good idea and would reduce confusion.

I suggest a Jesus thong for a symbol. We can all strip naked and parade in the streets wearing Jesus thongs. I'd find that quite homosexual and atheist. Killing two birds with one stone.

I don't think so. Atheists don't believe there is no God. They just don't have a proof of his existence, so they don't accept the idea of God.

It is the same as belief in UFO or Yeti - I don't have any real evidence, so I don't believe in it.

Believers, on the other hand, accept the existence of something, that hasn't been proven. That is the act of faith that separates them from atheists.

I think we're mudding down in atheism vs agnosticism.

@Silver: Is the invisible pink unicorn of Uranus a deity/'higher power'?

Anyway, to the thread topic, is there a symbol which can neatly represent the concept of religion, or god(s)? Because if you have that symbol, a red circle around it with a red line diagonal across it would do it.
