None of my schools had a marching band.

I can play basic rudiments, but they're the devilMattBrown said:If you play drumset, you better be able to play snare or bass. A good set of rudimential snare skills goes a long way in drum set playing.

And by snare or bass, i meant marching band snare and bass. Of course I can play everything together, but I just don't like to/never have/never will play in the marching band. It's for band geeks.![]()
My drum teacher already made me go through an entire snare book. That's enough for meMattBrown said:Well, thats too bad. Lemme tell you, there isnt anything that you can do in High School to build better drumming chops than play snare or tenor in a marching band/drum corps. In some schools, i understand that it has a bad rep...but it will open your hands up in a way that regular drum set exersizes cannot do. Plus, it builds a strong musical background for what drumset lit you're working on.
I strongly encourage my students to participate in high school marching/drum corps groups...and if they can't (some play football), then I give them special rudiment books. Keep plugging at those (and not just the 26 biggies), and you'll get so much better so quickly.

(By the way, I've been taking drum lessons for about a year now, and have been playing for 2 years. I don't need the lessons, but I take them to get new beats, and that's about it.)
