Are whales as useless as I think they are?

It seems to get a whale in the city radius I have to position a city usually in a less-optimal placement and then expand the borders, and then it's it's a mined grass tile with a road by a river (2f 1s 2c). At least for the first two ages, after which I usually get tired of large empire management and start a new game.

When eying city placement I consider whales, but so far placing for a whale costs too much in terms of land tiles and/or coastal tiles.

I usually play Conquests, but occasionally play PTW, although I don't think the whale factor changes.

Does anyone else have a use for whales, enough to sacrifice other types of land?

This hits it on the head. A whale is better than a non-whale sea tile, but a city really has to have crappy terrain around it for me to think, "Gee, I'd better place this so that I can grab that whale."

I really don't pay attention to the sea terrain, unless there's a fish. If the city is in a great location, and has a whale in its BFC, more power to it.

With a harbour it is a littler better than a bonus grassland as it makes 3F/1S/4C when you are a Republic. But they only make sense if they are worked by a fairly uncorrupt city.

+1/1/2 (available from the start of the game) is a pretty strong bonus resource. My chief gripe with them is that they always seem to push cities into having an odd number of fpt. It's really irritating for late game optimisation!

Ditto. Of course, if it's out of reach it's useless. And if to hook it up you have to sacrifice an ever greater amount of bonuses, then it's just not worth it.

I rarely happen to take advantage of whales, but when i do i certainly do not complain :D

I'm not whaling, I'm running a whale-watching business. I accept cash and in-kind payments, so I get food and shields in addition to gold.

I like to use whales in that they help the lousy cities that I end up placing along the coast as my fill-in cities. However, I won't give up goodies to get them.

Edit to add - the game seems to make you choose either goodies or whales.
